Chapter 161: Chapter 161: Masterpiece

Just then, Wendy Marshall and the others, who had been observing the battle, came out as well.

After the past few days together, they had developed an unspoken understanding.

They knew not to panic when trouble arose.

Rushing in recklessly would only disrupt Nina Jacobs’s rhythm.

It was better to listen to Nina and stay out of her way.

"We need to get up there, fast.

Some of the zombies from across the way are already heading over here."

Jessica Vance and Wendy Marshall said as they arrived to help.

"Right."

Nina Jacobs nodded.

Chase Gallagher hadn’t lured over that many zombies.

Wayne Warner had already taken care of quite a few, and it only took another ten-odd minutes to clean up the rest.

"Can you still walk?"

Nina Jacobs asked, walking over to Chase Gallagher.

After killing the zombie infant, the system had gifted her over 300 more Healing Potions.

"I... I think so."

Chase Gallagher tried to stand up.

"I’ll help him get upstairs."

Holden Shaw said, sheathing his long blade.

Staying here would inevitably attract more zombies.

"It’s getting late. Let’s just stay here for the night,"

Nina Jacobs suggested once they were back on the top floor where they had been before.

Even though the hospital was right across the street, this building was tall enough that it was hard for zombies to track them by scent.

After they went upstairs, the zombies gathered below slowly dispersed.

"I agree.

This building is over fifty stories high.

The zombies will have a hell of a time climbing all the way up here."

Pascal Paige had gone up and down the stairs twice, and even with the physique of a Superpower User, she was now panting for breath.

On their way up, they had also locked the stairwell door on every floor.

So it would definitely be safe to rest here for the night.

Nina Jacobs and Wayne Warner, on the other hand,

didn’t show the slightest sign of fatigue.

"Thank you."

Chase Gallagher looked at the group of strangers.

It was hard to believe his life had just been saved.

"Let me heal you,"

Pascal Paige said, using her healing technique without hesitation.

"Don’t worry about it. As for those people from earlier,"

"we know a bit about them."

Nina Jacobs said, pointing out the window.

"You do...?"

Surprise flashed across Chase Gallagher’s face.

"You bet. They even accused the Tiger-Lion Squad of stealing their supplies.

You’re one of them, you must have known about that, right?"

Holden Shaw retorted.

Chase Gallagher lowered his head.

He genuinely didn’t know.

He had arrived in City J half a month before Finn Hart and the others.

His mission had been to gather intel on the various factions in City J.

And to scout ahead.

"Sounds like pretty important work.

I can’t believe they’d just leave you behind."

Pascal Paige said as she continued her treatment.

But she noticed that as soon as she said it, Chase Gallagher hung his head even lower.

"..."

Pascal Paige instantly realized she’d said the wrong thing.

"Oh, don’t get me wrong, I didn’t mean it like that.

It’s their loss for leaving you behind..."

She tried to comfort him, but realized she was only digging herself a deeper hole.

"Did that Superpower User Alliance just get to City J recently?"

Nina Jacobs asked, changing the subject as she looked at the hospital across the street.

Chase Gallagher finally looked up.

"As far as I know, they arrived about fifteen days ago.

There were 400 of them at the time,

and their temporary camp is on Mountside Road."

"Has Finn Hart lost a lot of people recently?"

Nina Jacobs asked casually.

"Don’t get me wrong, I’m not interested in him.

It’s fine if you don’t want to answer."

’It had been less than ten days, and Finn Hart’s convoy had already been cut in half.’

’She even wondered if he had split his forces to gather supplies on two separate routes.’

"He’s lost a lot of people.

And on top of that, his ammunition supply is running low."

Chase Gallagher replied.

’So that’s why.’

"Anyway, you can rest here for tonight.

We’re heading on to City D tomorrow,

and if you’re up for it, we don’t mind taking you with us."

Nina Jacobs said.

"City D..."

Chase Gallagher was slightly surprised to hear her mention City D.

Still, he nodded. "Thank you."

Nina Jacobs had saved his life.

But he still didn’t know how to properly express his gratitude.

「Nightfall.」

Inside the walls of the private hospital, a small house with a window had mysteriously appeared.

Since the house was right up against the courtyard wall, it was shielded from any line of sight from above.

Only the surrounding zombies stirred for a brief moment.

But they quickly fell quiet again.

Nina Jacobs hid alone in the safe house, observing her surroundings from the window.

She had waited until everyone was asleep before deploying the safe house here.

Then, she used her Speed Element Superpower to slip inside.

Seeing that the nearby zombies hadn’t been stirred into a frenzy, she felt safe enough to continue.

The people from the Superpower User Alliance had said the medical supplies were on the first and second basement levels.

She had already scouted the entrance from the building across the street.

It looked like she would have to get in through the building marked "Inpatient Department."

Avoiding the zombies in the hospital courtyard wasn’t too difficult.

The hard part would be getting through the Inpatient Department.

If she used her Speed Element Superpower in there, she could run right into a zombie at any moment.

So, once inside the Inpatient Department, she proceeded with extreme caution.

ROAR!

A zombie’s roar suddenly shattered the silence of the main hall.

But the roar lasted only a moment before being cut short. 𝒇𝓻𝓮𝓮𝙬𝙚𝒃𝒏𝓸𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝓬𝓸𝒎

Nina Jacobs withdrew the Stone Spike.

In such a dark environment, she didn’t dare use her Fire Element Superpower for the time being.

She was afraid it would attract unwanted attention.

She finally reached the first basement level.

Nina Jacobs had assumed it would take a great deal of effort to open the medical supply warehouse.

Unexpectedly, all she had to do was destroy the fingerprint lock at the entrance.

ROAR!

The moment she opened the door, a zombie lunged out from inside.

Nina Jacobs was prepared and finished it off instantly with a Stone Spike.

Faced with shelf after shelf of neatly organized medicine, she finally understood why anyone would fight over this place.

There was a truly staggering amount of medical supplies.

Aside from two shelves that had been knocked over by the zombie, the warehouse was remarkably clean and tidy.

From inside the warehouse, a staircase led directly down to the second basement level.

After collecting all the medicine from the first and second basement levels, Nina Jacobs let out a huge yawn.

’I really should head back and get some rest.’

...

「Early the next morning.」

Completely unaware of what Nina Jacobs had done the night before, the group looked on with regret as they passed the entrance to the private hospital.

"There must be so much medicine in there,"

Pascal Paige lamented as she drove.

"For sure.

But the number of zombies inside those gates is terrifying.

If those gates open, we’ll never get away.

Let’s just get out of here, fast."

Wendy Marshall said, shuddering as she looked at the zombies trapped behind the hospital gates.

It looked like their numbers had grown.

"Did they close the gate when they left yesterday?"

Holden Shaw asked, a puzzled look on his face.

He could have sworn the gate was halfway open when those two squads left yesterday.

Nina Jacobs, for her part, didn’t feel the least bit guilty.

After all, she hadn’t been the one to close it.

Nor had she been the one to lure the zombies from outside into the courtyard.

The reason she wasn’t surprised was that she’d heard some strange noises in the predawn hours.

The gate and the zombies inside were all Chase Gallagher’s handiwork.

She had personally seen Chase Gallagher make a trip downstairs and back just as the sky was beginning to lighten.

’Without a doubt,’ she thought, ’leaving Chase Gallagher behind was Finn Hart’s biggest loss.’

As she mulled this over,

a sudden wave of drowsiness washed over Nina Jacobs.

’Could this feeling be...’

’An advancement?!’

Nina Jacobs struggled to keep her eyes open, but every part of her body was screaming to break through a barrier. The waves of power were too strong, overwhelming her consciousness completely.

Gazing at Nina Jacobs, who had fallen asleep on his shoulder, Wayne Warner reached out and gently shifted her into a more comfortable position...
