"What about the children?" I asked Lady Clarissa, and she rolled her eyes again.
Every time she did that, it felt like I was bothering her with questions I had every right to ask.
"They are fine, just in confinement and away from Iris. Otherwise, she would not be forced into marrying you," she replied. "Do you not understand such simple things?" She let out a loud sigh as if I were pushing her patience.
"Now, now, let’s just wait for the signal," she chuckled, and I rubbed my palms together anxiously.
There was one fear sitting in my heart. If Iris ever found out that I supported her mother and that I was the one who woke up Wilson, I feared she would never forgive me.
When Wilson woke up and interacted with Iris, she suddenly collapsed and had a seizure. It was very concerning. I worried about her.
I tried asking her mother what it was, because deep down I felt guilty that maybe all the stress had affected her, but her mother told me it was fine and that Iris had only been scared.
So I believed her, but I had not been allowed to go near Iris’s room this whole time. I was told to wait outside the mansion.
It was not as if we were sitting around doing nothing. They were preparing for a wedding, my wedding with Iris.
"At least let me go and see the children," I told her.
That was her mother, who was sitting in the Royal Garden and staring at the venue.
"The children are with their grandfather. Do not worry," she replied, almost snapping at me.
I knew the first thing Wilson did was attack a few people. One of them was his own father.
I did not know the exact details, but I knew he left him badly wounded. Now he was also confined in chains somewhere, along with the children.
"He went to her room to speak with her, right?" I asked Lady Clarissa, who nodded comfortably.
I could not understand how she was so at ease leaving her son alone with Iris. She knew that he did not really like her. I wished she understood that Iris deserved protection too.
"Do not worry, Luca. He will not do anything to her," she reassured me, but I was not certain how much I could trust her.
"Just listen to me. When you meet Wilson again this time, do not show that you are skeptical of him. He is letting you marry Iris. That is a huge deal. And is that not what you wanted?" she remarked.
She finally got up from her seat and approached me, gently placing her hand on my arm to convince me to stay quiet.
"My father will not stay silent for very long. He cares about Lord Mathew Schwartz," I reminded her, pointing out that her husband was tied up somewhere.
"Do not worry. Nothing will happen to my family," she reassured me.
However, there was a slight break in her voice that made me raise an eyebrow.
"What is it? Tell me," I pressed, and she swallowed with difficulty.
"It is just that I lied to you when I said that Iris passed out from anxiety," she admitted, causing my heart to pound.
"What do you mean by that? If she did not pass out from anxiety, then what did she pass out from?" I whispered, my heartbeat growing louder in my head.
"This is how it started for Wilson in the past," she explained.
That was all she had to say before everything felt unsteady beneath me.
"No, that cannot be true. Iris is fine, right?" I asked her.
Tears began to form in my eyes, but I was not the only one who looked concerned. For some reason, she did as well, even though I knew she did not love Iris more than Wilson.
"I hope that is the case. But I am telling you, this is what I saw. I noticed the patterns, and it frightened me. I do not want to see another one of my children suffer," she whispered between heavy breaths before rubbing her face with her hands. "But it is all fine. Maybe it was anxiety."
It felt as though she was comforting herself more than anyone else by making excuses, while in reality, I was already worried.
While we were talking, my father started to step toward me. His shoulders were broad, his eyes fixed on me.
"May I have a word with my son?" he asked, directing the request to Lady Clarissa while keeping his gaze on me.
The look he gave me made me uneasy. My father was not the kind of man who believed in betraying his master or anyone he pledged loyalty to, so it had been very difficult to calm him down.
He was the type of man who would die for his master, in this case, Iris’s father.
"Of course, but make sure you are ready for the wedding. Your son is getting married today," Lady Clarissa told my father, offering him a smile.
He bowed to her in respect before grabbing my arm and pulling me away.
"What the fuck are you doing?" he demanded in a bitter tone.
"Did I not tell you everything already? Why do you have to ask me again?" I replied. I did not want to talk about it, because every time they brought it up, I felt guilty and was reminded of what I had done.
"You cannot just hide from it. Do you think marrying some woman by playing these games is winning?" he grunted, his eyes staying on Lady Clarissa as if expecting her to step closer at any moment."It will be fine, okay? She will be much safer with me," I told him.
I looked away from him, as meeting his eyes was not really an option. When he answered me with silence, I turned to face him. I found him staring at me before nodding repeatedly.
"By the way, what is the news on Alpha King Kash? I hope he is not coming to ruin the wedding," I added.
My father watched me in silence for a few seconds before smiling.
"Of course not. He is not attacking us. He has gone back home," he replied.
Even though my father spoke calmly, there was something about his tone and the way he smiled. I wished he was not playing any games, which I knew he would not. He would not be foolish enough to hide anything from us.
