Amber Sword-Chapter 597: Act 47 Silver Mine (8) (3rd update, seeking support, will die without support) _2
But these people never came back—
Less than half an hour later, a written report was already on Ogins’ desk. This vigorous young man in his thirties—of course, according to Vorn’s standard—felt for the first time that things were starting to get somewhat tricky.
Ogins was able to come to this mine to work for Count Jandener partly because of the Count’s appreciation, but also because all the connections were well-managed, especially the great contribution of Countess Jandener—being a young relative of her family, he had hitchhiked his way here, just waiting to join the staff of that Count after his term ended.
Ogins knew very well that this mine was extremely important to Count Jandener, and those who could successfully earn the Count’s trust here would eventually become his close house servants. Therefore, he was filled with enthusiasm and even a sense of pride when he came to this place.
Everything seemed orderly until this morning.
This report shattered his beautiful dreams, the report stated that someone witnessed a gigantic spider in the lower levels of the mine—obviously, normal spiders wouldn’t grow larger than a human head, it must be a monster.
Ogins immediately broke out in a cold sweat, knowing what had happened in this mine a decade ago. If the workers had once again dug a passage through to Jogen Digan, he couldn’t even begin to imagine how serious the situation could get.
The young man suddenly felt overwhelmed, repeatedly confirming the situation in the mining area, but each piece of news was worse than the previous one. When a squad of soldiers disappeared in the lower mine, Ogins knew he was in big trouble.
He was very aware of his own abilities—or rather, lack of ability. He originally came here to secure a relatively cushy job that could still catch Count Jandener’s attention, but he never expected his luck to be so bad to encounter the worst possible scenario.
Ogins was utterly at a loss, almost collapsing in his chair. What kept running through his mind was whether Count Jandener would have him torn to pieces if he lost this mine.
And this was the scene Kulan witnessed when he pushed open the door—
This Sword Master, who had entered the Golden Domain thirty years ago and was one of Count Jandener’s most trusted aides, saw the young man’s crestfallen appearance—although he had long known the man had no real ability and was merely a privileged person who took advantage of connections, he still couldn’t help but feel a wave of disdain.
He knew the other party was incompetent, but he didn’t expect them to be completely useless.
He coughed, bringing Ogins out of his state of shell shock. When Ogins saw Kulan at the door, his grey eyes immediately brightened.
Of course he recognized this elderly Executive Deputy Officer, Guard Captain, and the highest military commander of the mining area. Unlike him, Kulan had been by Count Jandener’s side since the White Frost Year, managing the day-to-day operations of the mine with complete trust from the Count.
Although Ogins had secretly cursed this old man, who gave him no respect, as a ’damned old codger’ more than once, he at least knew he had to show a certain level of respect on the surface, especially now when this person might be his savior.
He called out like a drowning man clutching the last straw, "Mr. Kulan, you’re finally here! We’re in big trouble now!"
"How are we in big trouble?" Kulan, with his full head of white hair, asked disdainfully.
Ogins didn’t dare take offense at this moment and quickly explained the whole situation in detail. In fact, Kulan had already figured out most of it before coming here. He inwardly cursed this damned fool who withheld information from him until things became uncontrollable—if he had known earlier, at least his squad of soldiers wouldn’t have died in vain.
Thus, Kulan was very displeased at the moment. Nonetheless, recognizing the gravity of the situation, he suppressed his dissatisfaction and coldly asked:
"Oh, so what does the clerk intend to do?"
Ogins was taken aback, knowing Kulan was taking this opportunity to make him uncomfortable, and rightfully so. He gritted his teeth and smiled apologetically, "Well... I’m not sure what’s going on down there, but I fear the miners might riot. I plan to send the Guard Team down to maintain order..."
Seeing the old man’s increasingly grim face, he swallowed hard. "At the very least, we need some manpower..."
Kulan interrupted him with a cold snort.
"Nonsense, sending the Guard Team down there would only confirm to the miners that something is wrong. It would lead to faster chaos. With over a thousand miners and fewer than a hundred guards, do you really think you can maintain order, clerk? Are you dreaming?"
Ogins’ face turned red from the scolding, but thanks to his thick skin, he awkwardly replied, "Then what should we do?"
"I’ll go take a look," Kulan wiped his sword hilt. "The monsters below the Big Beehive are troublesome but won’t hold me back. I’ll see how bad the situation is down there first—"
"Good, good, good!" Ogins said ’good’ three times in a row. Though the problem wasn’t resolved yet, Kulan’s willingness to step in allowed him to breathe a sigh of relief.
