Amber Sword-Chapter 896 - 178: Battle in the Canyon (Part 2)_2
"Thanks to your reminder, I thought of a good idea."
"A good idea? Are you talking nonsense?"
Veronica was momentarily stunned, but suddenly felt weightless, as if soaring through clouds. She turned back uneasily, only to see Brand leap forward, like a bird, toward the abyss.
The noble daughter opened her mouth wide—unable to utter a sound, she only felt she had never been so thrilled in her life, her heart pounding in her throat.
"Aaaaaaaaaaaah—"
The prolonged scream slid into the valley like a meteor, and Veronica felt the wind rushing her face, tears streaming—no, flying out.
She felt she was about to die, going to die, in any case, the next moment she was going to die.
But Brand was not courting death. He suddenly drew the longsword from the scabbard and thrust it into the cliff face with a reverse grip—a sharp screech, as the Green Sky sank up to its hilt into the cliff, drawing a bright golden spark through the rock layer.
Their falling speed halted instantly, suspended in mid-air, but by this time they had already fallen a long distance, leaving Andesa far above.
Brand had already spotted a rock platform not far away, kicked off from the cliffside to pull out the Green Sky, then landed steadily towards it. Though there was wind in the valley, at his level of strength and constitution, it was no significant obstacle.
After several repeated attempts, they had steadily reached the area close to the bottom of the abyss.
When they finally stopped, Veronica was half-hugging him, looking up at the sky in his embrace, gasping for air, her small chest heaving, as if she hadn’t come back to her senses.
"Am I dead?"
The noble girl asked blankly.
Brand thought for a moment, then suddenly released his grip, causing Veronica to fall on her bottom.
"Ouch! What are you doing!!"
"That’s why, with my hand released, you would know."
"Boo-hoo, you big meanie..."
That young lady started crying piteously, not displaying her usual fierce demeanor at all.
But Brand just felt his right arm numb and unfeeling. He looked up, thinking he’d never want to try it again if he could help it; the sensation was exhilarating—to a degree that even with his constitution and strength, he could barely handle it.
He looked down again.
Below, a misty blackness was already faintly visible. He and Andesa were moving fast and were close to the valley floor. However, the Holy Multi-Headed Dragon’s exact location was still uncertain, and the pursuit needed to continue.
He crouched down and nudged Veronica’s shoulder, "I say, you hide here well, I’ll distract her."
Veronica was stunned, momentarily forgetting to cry.
Brand saw a flicker of alertness in her blue eyes, not knowing what she was thinking as she suddenly said:
"I’ll go with you!"
Oh? Brand thought she hated being with him, even more than with Andesa, but he shook his head right away.
"No, taking you along would slow me down."
After saying this, Brand prepared to leave, but to his surprise, as he turned, the noble young lady hurriedly scrambled up to follow him. Brand immediately sighed:
"Following me is dangerous, don’t you know what I’m going to do?"
"Staying here is even more dangerous, you, you can’t just leave a noble lady... still in such a dangerous place." Her voice noticeably grew smaller.
"Oh—"
Brand paused, but Veronica had a point, who knew what lurked below the abyss. Though hidden here, if a monster showed up, it might not end well.
He didn’t mind, though Bai was still with Veroni.
Thinking for a moment, he extended his hand back, "Well... come on then."
"Wha-what are you doing?"
Veronica immediately asked warily.
"Didn’t you say you wanted to come with me?"
"Who’s willing to hold your hand!"
"Then forget it."
Brand feigned to leave.
"Wait! Hey!"
The noble daughter gritting her teeth tossed her pigtails and hurriedly caught up. But watching Brand’s back, she hesitated, then stepped up to hold his hand.
Afraid of the surroundings, she still spoke stubbornly:
"Remember, I’m not doing this because I’m scared... and I... I won’t thank you."
"Oh—"
Brand answered in a drawn-out tone.
Andesa hadn’t caught up yet, so they slowly walked into the valley floor, gray shadows flickering in the mist here, and the air seemed to have a scent.
As they walked along the valley’s floor, where no grass grew, Brand sniffed the air but before he could speak, Veronica said behind him, "Strange, such a strong elemental presence, it’s the Dull Gas Element."
"Hmm?"
Brand turned back, "You recognize it too?"
"Why wouldn’t I recognize it?" Veronica glared at him irritably.
"I am an Elemental Mage, are you?"
"What kind of Elemental Mage are you? This lady is a Magic Swordsman, hmph, you bumpkin!"
Brand once used to get so angry at being called a bumpkin that he was fuming, but now it felt different, especially with the young lady’s eyes red like a rabbit’s—kind of swollen, and he couldn’t help but laugh.
A bit annoyed from Brand’s gaze, Veronica glared: "What are you looking at?"
"You said it’s the Dull Gas Element? Do you know what the Dull Gas Element is?"
"Hmph, elements are all activated, such a presence only appears after long-term sedimentation in an area, but it’s really incredible, how can one place accumulate such a dense element?"
"Do you feel the element growing denser?" Brand asked. 𝒻𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝘯𝘰𝑣ℯ𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝘮
"Yes."
"Which means we’re in the right place."
"What?"
Veronica saw Brand take out a softly glowing grey gemstone from his pocket, and she paused, feeling the gemstone particularly beautiful for a moment.
