Chapter 509: Chapter 509: Wings

Su Jiyai gasped. "No way..."

Before she could even think twice, her feet lifted off the ground.

She flapped once... just once... and shot up like a rocket.

"WOOOOOOO!!" she shouted as the wind slapped her face and her hair flew wildly.

She zipped across the sky, flipping and turning, laughing like a kid on a roller coaster.

"I can fly!"

Below her, trees swayed and clouds looked like soft pillows. Su Jiyai felt free. Alive.

"This... this is amazing," she said breathlessly, floating high above Hope Base.

Just as Su Jiyai was gliding through the sky with a wide grin on her face, she stretched her arms out and shouted, "I’m truly amazing! I must’ve been born to fly!"

She swooped through the air like a bird, spinning once, twice, even doing a little loop. Her laughter echoed above the clouds.

But then...

[Do not rejoice too soon, Host] the system’s voice suddenly said in its usual flat tone.

"Huh?" Su Jiyai blinked. "Don’t jinx me, System."

[Warning issued for safety reasons.]

"No, seriously, don’t—AHHHHHH!"

Before she could even finish her sentence, her wings wobbled.

The wind shifted.

Her balance vanished.

One second she was floating, the next, her body tilted sideways and—

"WAAAHHHH!!" she screamed as she dropped like a rock toward the ground.

Leaves flew everywhere as she crashed through a tree branch, spiraling down faster and faster.

"You jinxed me, you stupid system!"

[That is incorrect. I merely issued a—]

"SHUT UP!"

She gritted her teeth and summoned her cultivation power in the middle of freefall.

Her body glowed slightly as she pressed her palms together. Energy wrapped around her like a blanket, and with a loud whoosh, her fall slowed.

She floated gently and finally touched the ground, landing in a crouch.

Her face twitched with annoyance. "No jinxing from now on. Got it?"

The system’s voice sounded weirdly hurt.

[My intention was not to curse you, but to provide a helpful reminder.]

Su Jiyai crossed her arms and turned away. "Mmhmm. Sure. Just zip it next time."

She took a deep breath and shook her arms, trying to relax.

"Okay... time for the next power."

She stared up at the sky, remembering all the devil powers she had absorbed. One by one, she started to go through them.

Third was Psychic Detection... Elisha’s power.

With it, she could sense people’s minds, read their emotions, and even use psychic energy to mess with their thoughts.

"I bet this one’s super useful," Su Jiyai whispered to herself. "But... I need a person to test it on."

She looked around.

Nothing.

"Ugh. Guess I’ll skip this for now, too," she sighed.

Then, she raised her hand and pointed a finger in the air. "Next!"

The fourth power—Weapon Mastery. This one came from Scythe, the devil who could make anything into a deadly weapon. Even a stick.

"I like this one," Su Jiyai said with a grin. "Let’s go full action movie mode."

[Would you like to teleport to the underground training room?] the system asked.

"Obviously. Take me there now."

In a flash of light, Su Jiyai disappeared from the field.

The next second, she reappeared in a wide, dark room deep below the base.

The floor was polished smooth, perfect for battle practice. Target dummies stood at the far end, some shaped like robots, others like human fighters.

Blue lights flickered on the ceiling, casting an intense glow over the whole place.

Su Jiyai looked around, clearly impressed. "This place is cooler than I remember."

She walked up to one of the racks and picked up a long silver staff. It felt heavy, but the moment she held it—

FWOOM.

Her grip adjusted on its own, her arms moved like she had years of training.

"Whoa," she whispered, her eyes wide. "I’ve never used a staff before, but my hands just... know what to do?"

[That is the effect of Weapon Mastery. Your body remembers techniques even if your mind doesn’t.]

Su Jiyai spun the staff faster and faster until it became a blur. Then, she twirled and slammed it against a dummy’s head.

CRACK!

The dummy flew back and crashed into the wall.

Su Jiyai grinned like a kid who just smashed a piñata.

"Oh, yeah. This one’s definitely my favorite so far."

Su Jiyai twirled the silver staff one more time and placed it back onto the rack with a satisfied grin.

"Alright," she muttered, brushing her hands together. "Next power."

She raised her hand, and instantly, a warmth spread through her body.

The fifth power—Fire Affinity + Copy Ability. This one came from Ashen, the terrifying devil who could copy any superpower for five minutes. Su Jiyai already had a fire superpower from before, but the moment she activated this one, she felt... different.

Stronger.

Her fingers glowed with a soft red hue, heat swirling gently around her like invisible flames. She didn’t even need to try too hard—the fire just came naturally to her now.

She raised a hand, and a flame sparked from her palm.

But this flame... it didn’t feel normal. It felt denser, hotter, alive.

"Whoa," she whispered. "My fire feels... stronger. Way stronger. Like, crazy strong."

She flicked her wrist, and the flame shot across the room, slamming into a metal dummy. The dummy melted at the point of contact, and steam hissed into the air.

She blinked.

"I didn’t even use full strength."

The copying part of the power was also itching at her. It was like a weird hunger building inside her, making her want to borrow someone else’s ability. Try it. Use it. Feel it.

She looked around. Empty training room. No humans. No superhumans.

"Ugh. I need a person to test this on, too," she groaned. "What’s with all these powers needing people?"

With a sigh, she shoved her hands in her pockets and muttered, "Fine. Next."

Her sixth power — Future Senses + Shield.

This one came from Prophet, the mysterious devil who could see the future and defend himself from nearly any attack.

Future Senses, unfortunately, was unpredictable. Sometimes it gave her clear visions. Other times, it stayed quiet.

"I can’t control it yet," she muttered. "So no testing that part today..."

But Shield?

"That one," she said, stretching her neck with a little crack, "I can test."

She turned toward the system. "Hey, System! Activate some of the training dummies. Make them fight me."

[Affirmative. Activating five combat dummies. Level 7 Expert mode.]

Suddenly, five dummies across the room lit up with glowing red eyes. Their metal bodies started to move like real fighters. Weapons popped out of their arms—swords, hammers, daggers.

Su Jiyai took a stance. "Alright. Let’s do this."

The dummies charged.

Su Jiyai didn’t panic. Instead, she took a breath and activated the shield.

A soft hum vibrated around her body, and a shimmering bubble of golden energy wrapped her like a second skin.

CLANG!

The first dummy’s hammer smashed into her side, but it bounced off like it hit rubber.

The second dummy slashed at her head.

The blade hit her shield and shattered into sparks.

The others joined in, attacking together, their weapons flashing like lightning. But no matter what they did, nothing got through.

Su Jiyai stood in the center, arms crossed, not even moving. "Wow..."

[Testing at Level 7 Expert complete. Initiating Level 10.]

The system activated two more dummies. These ones were massive, taller than the others, and faster.

They zoomed forward and hit her with everything they had.

But the result?

Nothing.

Not a scratch. Not a dent. Not even a tiny tremble in the shield.

Su Jiyai blinked in surprise.

She hadn’t expected this. The shield held like a wall of stars. Unbreakable.

For a moment, she just stood there, staring at the dummies trying—and failing—to hurt her.

Her heart felt heavy.

"This kind of power... it could’ve saved humanity," she whispered. "We could’ve used it to fight the zombies, to protect everyone. To end the apocalypse..."

She clenched her fists.

"But those devils—" her voice dropped, bitter "—they didn’t care about saving anyone. All they wanted was chaos. Control. Destruction."

The dummies paused, frozen in their positions.

Su Jiyai looked down at her hands, the soft golden glow of the shield still flickering.

Sometimes... she really didn’t understand what went on in those devil minds.

"Anyways... now I am the one wielding this power, I will utilize it properly."

[Host, you still have a power that you haven’t tested yet.]

"Ah... right, the one I got from the puppet, right ? Is it puppet mastery or something?"Su Jiyai asked with curiosity.

[No. It is more like... You will know once you try it.]

"Alright. But how should I wield it?" Unlike the other powers, Su Jiyai had no idea how to initiate it.

[It’s a passive power host. You don’t need to initiate it. You just need to be near the pawns of Deimos and the power will work on its.]

The moment the system said those words, Su Jiyai’s eyes widened as she had a general idea of what the power might be.
