Chapter 28: Braised Pork in a Can

Su Yinhe was eating up a storm.

Over at Li Qiao’ side, things were even more heated.

“Old Li, am I seeing this right? This is white rice! It’s so beautiful. Are these canned braised eggs and cold dishes also for us? Pinch me, I’m not dreaming, right?” Heizi stared at the five rice cookers filled with rice and at the cans and dishes, swallowing his saliva frantically.

He had thought that the buns he had eaten in the morning were already a delicacy.

At noon, he didn’t ask for anything else, just to have another meal of buns and to eat his fill would be enough.

If he was full from these two meals, perhaps he wouldn’t need to eat tomorrow and could save a meal.

...

Plus, Heizi had a bit of selfishness.

He had been too busy eating in the morning and forgotten to secretly save one or two buns.

He was thinking if there were as many white buns at noon, he could keep one or two to take back to his wife and children.

He was not capable and did not have a superpower. His wife and children had followed him for so many years without having a good meal, eating only porridge or roots.

Now that there was such a rare delicacy, Heizi wanted to bring it back for his wife and children.

Li Qiao also doubted himself, and after hearing Heizi’s words, he pinched himself hard.

It was real!

All of this was for them to eat.

“Well… let’s eat. When we’re full, we must work hard for Miss Su and certainly mustn’t slack off,” Li Qiao’s liking for Su Yinhe grew even stronger at that moment.

He was determined to work hard and finish grinding the soy milk that Su Yinhe wanted as soon as possible.

Li Qiao discussed with the other four people, and they decided to open just three cans; Su Yinhe had given them a total of eight cans, so they would open three and save five to take one each back home.

It was the same with the braised eggs; they decided to save five and not eat them, so each could take one back home.

“Miss Su won’t get mad at us for doing this, right?” Heizi really wanted to take the delicious food back home for his wife and children, but he was afraid that doing so might upset Su Yinhe.

Miss Su was kind to give them so much good food, and it might be inappropriate for them to secretly keep some to take back home—maybe it was too greedy.

“Miss Su is a good person; she probably won’t get mad,” Li Qiao dared to do this for a reason.

Chi Yan had already paid them one-third of their salary, and they would receive the rest once they had finished their work.

Su Yinhe didn’t actually need to take care of their meals anymore, but she still provided them with breakfast, good quality white buns at that, and now she had brought so many goodies for lunch.

From the bottom of his heart, Li Qiao considered Su Yinhe a good person.

Heizi really wanted to bring good things home for his wife and children, so right after Li Qiao finished speaking, he immediately agreed.

The others did the same; not all of them had a wife and children like Heizi, but they thought that they could sell the good quality cans at the base for a substantial amount of Contribution Value, securing a month’s worth of rations.

They divided the cans and braised eggs first, then began their lunch.

They started with the braised pork cans. Once the cans were opened, they looked at the shiny, oily braised pork inside and simultaneously swallowed their saliva.

Canned braised pork wasn’t as overpoweringly fragrant as freshly made braised pork.

In Su Yinhe’s view, such canned foods, loaded with preservatives and using not so fresh meat, couldn’t be considered as a true dish of braised pork.

But to the five men who hadn’t eaten meat for years, this fragrant canned braised pork was as real as it gets.

Three cans wasn’t too many but also wasn’t too few.

They didn’t just grab it directly but evenly divided it into five portions.

Hot white rice with braised pork was simply a delicious pleasure of life.

“If I were to die now, I would die happy,” the youngest said as he wept and sighed after taking his first bite.

With the braised pork, they finished a large bowl of rice, and even made use of the remaining sauce by stirring the rice in the canned pork, allowing it to soak up the juices before eating it directly from the can.

Once the braised pork was finished, they started on the braised eggs and cold dishes.

The braised eggs were evenly divided, and the cold dishes were in a disposable bowl—this time they didn’t divide it but simply helped themselves whenever they wanted.

Su Yinhe, having come down in a hurry, had also casually picked from the cold dishes.

The variety wasn’t extensive, but the portions were plentiful.

Seaweed, tofu skin, cold wheat gluten, pickled radish, jellyfish…

The five of them cleaned up the dishes completely.

Su Yinhe miscalculated, their appetites were big, but not big enough for each person to finish a rice cooker’s worth of rice on their own.

When they had eaten their fill, they had only finished two and a half rice cookers worth of rice.

The five of them looked at the remaining rice with regret, hating that they couldn’t eat just a bit more at that moment.

“If only… we could take this back home,” Heizi thought of his wife at home, who had to dilute her porridge with water four or five times.

He was not capable, and since his wife had been with him, she had not had a single good day.

To eat porridge, it always had to be diluted several times.

“Do you want to take it back? Do you want me to prepare disposable lunch boxes for you?” Su Yinhe had just heard Heizi say this when she arrived.

She was quite happy about it; she had guessed wrong and worried about what to do if too much rice was left.

Although leftover rice could be used to make fried rice or porridge, she couldn’t eat much of it on her own. She didn’t want to just put it in the fridge and eat leftovers.

Su Yinhe didn’t like eating leftover food.

But to throw it directly into the trash seemed like too much of a waste.

If they could finish it all, that would save her a lot of trouble.

“Really?” Heizi hadn’t expected her to be so easygoing and his face lit up with delight. He could bring the rice home for his wife and child.

“Miss Su, I’m really sorry,” Li Qiao, more steady than Heizi, was also very happy.

He didn’t have a wife or children, but he had parents and a younger brother.

“Of course, you can. However, I’ll only provide the disposable lunch boxes; you pack them yourselves.” There were two and a half pots of rice, and getting all of it into lunch boxes was no small task.

Su Yinhe had no intention of giving herself extra work.

“Thank you, Miss Su, we’ll make sure to work hard.” They had nothing else to offer, so they could only keep repeating this phrase.

“You continue working for now, I’ll go to the supermarket later to get the lunch boxes for you. Once you’re done, you can pack them up slowly.”

“No problem.” The voice of the five was loud; Su Yinhe, being close by, felt her ears buzz after they finished shouting.

Su Yinhe rubbed her ears and shook her head.

Terrifying.

Maybe it was the prospect of taking food home that had them exceptionally motivated; they worked as if they were working themselves to death in the afternoon.

Su Yinhe felt a twinge of guilt watching them.

They didn’t even rest after eating.

It made her feel like a capitalist.

Fortunately, it wasn’t long before Lin Murong diverted her attention.
