Chapter 234: The Long Dark

I stopped at the door, turning back after I remembered something important. "Old man, can I speak to you alone for a moment?" My hand rested on the metal doorframe, a vital danger that would eventually affect this boss.

"Hmm?"

He grunted as if clearing his throat.

I thought he might refuse me, but the old man stared at me for a second. Jiang Roulan and Siwan looked at us while Siwan seemed concerned. Roulan frowned at me, clearly mad about what I just said about seducing her mother.

"Leave us, Siwan."

"F-Father, are you sure, this little bastard..."

From her reaction, I wondered if Siwan was also mad at me for that comment, too.

"Don’t worry, I’m not that old, I can’t deal with a dumb kid."

"...you better behave."

Siwan pointed at me while lifting her chin. Then, she dragged Roulan out with her as I remained in the room.

After a few moments, the door closed with a hydraulic hiss.

The old man looked pissed.

"So, what did you want to tell me. John Wang?" His voice and gaze transformed, and the kind and gentle grandfather vanished. "If it’s something stupid... I will stop you seeing Roulan for a week!"

"Oh? So you accept us being together?"

"Don’t be foolish!"

I didn’t want to waste too much time, and quickly walked to the old man and tapped the desk. Thankfully, his trust in me, although low, didn’t matter.

A blue map formed along the dark brown desk, showing the central and southern parts of Longwan City.

"W-What is this?"

Although technology existed, the depth and detail of this 3D hologram of the city, buildings, and people’s movements in the areas were previously impossible, at least in the current state of the world.

"It’s a secret for now, but once we’re family, I can tell you, old man."

"Y-You..." He held his complaint by clenching his teeth and both hands. "So what does this mean? I don’t think you asked to remain just for this, right?"

I looked up at Roulan’s grandfather and nodded, "This is serious, Jiang Lao." With another tap, the map spread out and showed our original base and the massive horde of red dots.

"What do the dot colours mean?" He asked.

The colours were blue, green, yellow and red.

"Blues are people with goodwill and trust towards me, greens are people whom I have met but don’t know well enough, yellows are neutral people with no connection and Red marks the enemy, zombies, bandits..."

We didn’t speak for a moment.

I watched the map and noticed the horde led by the mutant Lao had moved further south; in fact, the clump of red dots appeared to be heading this way.

"My god, there must be more than five thousand at least."

"Old Lao, this is something I haven’t told anyone yet. The zombies seem to have moved further south in the past few days."

"How strong?" He asked.

"The strongest monster is what we call a Stage Four, at least."

"Stage Four?"

I learned that their base hadn’t given them a number or name yet, and they only called them instinctively.

So I took out a spare pad and transferred the information about stages and the types of zombies we’d managed to kill during the past month.

"This is the information we’ve gathered on them and about the changes to humans, too."

I also bought a set of tools for the old man to check a person’s stage and their talent or skills. Since he would become part of our family, I didn’t want Jiang Roulan to regret anything.

"So I am around the level of a Stage Four, interesting." freewёbnoνel.com

The old man looked out the window, using glasses that allowed one to see a person’s basic attributes and skills. "This is revolutionary, it’s a shame the amount is so limited. Are you sure I can have these?"

"Old man, you’re as good as family. I don’t think you should reveal their trick to anyone but Siwan and people you trust, though."

I knew there was no point telling the cunning old bastard to keep it a secret. So instead, I warned him to use caution with such rare items.

"I know, what do you take me for!" He grumbled, before rubbing his beard again, "So, what do you want in return?" Jiang Lao asked.

The old man was wise; he knew everything had a cost.

"Give me your daughter."

"W-WHAT!? WHAT NONSENSE!"

The old man exploded, and I thought he might have a heart attack. "You’re too loud! I don’t mean it that way, old man." I waved my hands while trying not to laugh. "I need someone with her kind of expertise and skill."

"Haa....Haa.... you... little bastard, why word it that way?!"

"Because you’re fun to tease..."

"T-That’s it!"

Once he stopped trying to blow his brains out by increasing his blood pressure. I explained my idea for the future, which was to create safe zones.

"I don’t understand why you don’t want to join this base?" His question was fair and reasonable.

"Because I need to be the leader of my groups. I don’t want to be beneath anyone."

I looked at him with determination in my eyes, to show the old man I wasn’t joking or playing around.

He stared back at me for some time before nodding.

"First, complete your task, if you do well... I will see what I can do, Siwan’s will come first." He looked out the window while speaking to himself, "Although it was against my wishes, she chose to follow her path, which made me feel proud when she followed my will... but I’ve come to realise that wasn’t her true dream or goal."

He sighed before taking out a black star cigar, rolling it in his palm. "Now it’s too late, after all... I don’t want her or Roulan to be forced into anything."

"Thanks, old man!"

"...get going and finish that job. I’ll have a meal ready for when you get back."

This was probably his way of saying he accepted me into the family.

Well, he’d seen my current strength, at least the difference between us. After that, he stopped arguing when I promised to make both Jiang Siwan and Roulan stronger than other humans, and to help Jiang Ping in the future.

Of course, I would only do this once they became part of my group, but that wasn’t a problem. Now, it was time to deal with my first mission from the boss...

Damn old man... he’s lucky his wife passed on amazing genes.

"Phew..."

The moment I stepped outside, I found Jiang Siwan and Roulan at the end of the corridor, waiting for me. One had eyes of worry and concern, while the other looked at me with a mixture of doubt and suspicion.

Did the old man also pass on his genes to her?

They both stood close to me as I left the office, "What did you speak about? To make me wait here like this..." It became clear from this sentence that Jiang Siwan held grudges.

"Don’t worry, it’s nothing important." I strode towards Jiang Roulan and grabbed her hand. She looked at me for a second, then curled her fingers around mine. "You’ll probably hear about it from your father later on."

"Why can’t you tell me?" Her husky voice sounded cute and sweet.

"Because you wouldn’t believe me if I said it." We crossed through the hall and down towards the room where I had met Jiang Siwan earlier, which seemed to be her office. "Also, you have nothing to give me, unlike your dad."

"Y-You!?"

Both women made a sound, but the one holding my hand started pinching. I didn’t mind, though, as the feeling was pleasant.

I didn’t want to linger on this topic and risk it becoming a sitaution where I say the wrong thing to her mother again, the sexy milf awoke something deep inside me that refused to hold back.

"So, what comes next? Am I going outside right away to clear the zombies? Or will I get to meet everyone first?"

Jiang Roulan looked up at me with an emotion in her eyes that seemed different, but before I could see what was there, she quickly turned away.

"Hey... are you that desperate to leave me?"

I lifted our hands together and placed them against her chest, feeling her breasts push against the backside of my hand. The firm yet soft sensation made it hard to pull myself back. "How could that be? If I didn’t have a mission I’d push you down right now."

"Ahem..." A voice came from behind, that’s when I realsied Jiang Siwan was watching me. So I pulled my hands back, but...

Roulan’s hands grasped onto me and held me there.

"I will call for Li Ya, Tang Wei and the others who came with you, but you only have a short time before my father wants you to leave with them to start clearing the zombies."
