Apocalypse: Transmigrated General's Daughter Uses Space to Survive-Chapter 511: Unexpected Allies
Others were just normal citizens who had awakened superpowers.
Young men and women who had gained powers after the apocalypse but had never faced a large-scale zombie siege or any other kind of war.
The closest they had experienced a war was on their TV screens watching movies.
Ye Xuan saw how tense some of the young people below were. They would raise their heads discreetly and look into the distance when they thought no one was watching.
It was as if they could already imagine the hordes of zombies that would attack them at any moment.
Ye Xuan sighed at this. Fear was natural, but letting it spread was not.
He jumped down from the wall, landing lightly on the packed earth.
One couldn’t even tell he had jumped from a ten-meter wall.
He walked straight into the work zone, boots crunching against gravel and dirt.
"Everyone, stop for a moment." He said calmly as if to soothe the braves of the workers that were stretched so tight that they were about to snap.
Surprised and sweaty faces turned to look at him as the earth stilled and soil stopped moving.
"You are doing a good job and have advanced faster than expected.
Keep up the good work." He encouraged them, earning tired but motivated smiles from them.
Backs straightened unconsciously and pride began to take root in the hearts of the earth-element superpower users who had been busy for hours.
"These trenches aren’t just dirt and holes you are digging.
They are the reason the people behind these walls will survive. They will provide cover for the injured to be moved.
Every meter you dig buys them another breath.
So, think of these trenches as buying your fellow countrymen and survivors time. Time for them to change their fate." His voice wasn’t loud, but it reached the ears of everyone, even those digging in other areas.
The president standing on top of the wall with the other leaders nearly wept when he heard what Ye Xuan said.
"This young man could have made an excellent politician. A simple statement could sway the hearts of many."
The others nodded, some feeling inferior to a soldier who didn’t even like to talk.
"He is an excellent young man. It’s a good thing that his chosen partner is also a loyal citizen." Commander Shen added, shifting slightly on the wall to sit down.
"You are not digging for today, but for the day zombies rush forward to attack but realize that they have to cross that trench to reach us.
That pause is why you are working hard. Because that pause is what many survivors will need to save their lives.
So, when you move the soil, when you break the ground, you are literally saving lives." Ye Xuan continued firmly this time.
The young awakeners swallowed hard before nodding their heads.
"Alright, resume your work." Ye Xuan said before floating back to the top of the wall.
The ground came back to life the next moment as the workers resumed their digging.
As the work continued, Ye Xuan moved from sector to sector, correcting angles, adjusting layouts, and occasionally jumping down and stepping in to demonstrate precise earth compression techniques.
Unlike many leaders, he did not command from afar.
When a trench wall cracked unexpectedly, he placed his palm against the ground and stabilized it himself.
Even though he was not an earth element superpower user, he was a cultivator and spiritual energy could be universal when needed.
Especially for a cultivator with as much experience as he did.
By midday, the sun burned weakly through the clouds. The trenches now formed a deadly ring around the base, primary trenches closest to the wall, secondary and tertiary ones spreading outward like a spiderweb of traps.
What had started as a simple plan to dig a trench around the base had turned into an elaborate trap to protect the base better.
Seeing that the work was almost done, Ye Xuan moved among the secondary and tertiary trenches himself, planting grenades inside them.
This way, when the zombies fell inside and more fell on top, the push and pull and the struggle to get out will cause the safety pins to be removed, blowing the zombies in the trenches to pieces.
The grenades could not be planted in the main trench near the wall for fear of compromising the wall, but the others were an exception.
Seeing that they were almost done, Ye Xuan went back to the wall and called everyone to attention.
"You have worked hard. Go receive your payment, then go back and rest.
We will need your assistance during the battle, so don’t let yourself burn out before then."
"Yes, sir." Another unanimous cry was hard from the workers before they headed to the gate to go back into the base.
Just as the leaders were about to descend from the wall, a military truck suddenly appeared on the horizon, dust rising from the ground and nearly blocking the view behind it completely.
"Is Little Miao back?" Commander Shen was surprised that he could see that far, but he didn’t think much of it.
"She should be. Let’s see what happens." Ye Xuan replied, a gentle smile making its way to his face.
"Aren’t you going to warn her about the trenches?" Someone asked curiously when they saw Ye Xuan just smiling without saying anything.
"No need, she has already seen them." Ye Xuan good-naturedly replied.
"She is still so far away, how did she see them?" Another leader asked.
However, this time, Ye Xuan didn’t reply as all his attention was on his future wife.
"Stay inside the truck." Chu Miao, who was in the distance said to Yu Wane’r.
"Sure." Yu Wane’r didn’t want to cause trouble, so she replied and sat quietly inside the truck.
At the back of the truck were dozens of zombies tied together using ropes that seemed a little too sturdy.
