Chapter 162: Chaotic

The arena erupted into chaos immediately the moment the first Guardian lunged at them. Basalt-plated behemoths thundered forward while the winged predators shrieked overhead.

Mucus creatures began dropping in wet splashes across the stone in a more chaotic manner than before, like a beast without care.

Headless warriors dragged their rusted weapons through the dust as crystal serpents slid between fractured tiles.

The two-headed Guardian from the First Floor raised both blades and charged straight toward the center.

Myles moved first just like he always did.

He didn’t wait for formation to settle. He dashed with his body angled forward, short sword gripped at his right hand and his curved dagger reversed in his left hand.

The basalt beast lowered its horn and rushed him. At the last second he turn his body sideways, letting the charge graze past his shoulder, then drove his dagger into the glowing seam behind its foreleg.

Pressure from the impact burst against his palm. He followed with a clean upward slash from his short sword immediately, splitting the cracked plate wide open.

The beast roared and collapsed.

Above him, Samantha already controlled the air from her position at the back. Her black bow bent in a smooth rhythm. Arrows flew in tight arcs, piercing through membranous wings and nailing the flying predator to a stone pillar for now.

But then the creature freed itself and dove toward Ethan.

She adjusted instantly and shot through its eye in the middle of its descent.

Ethan didn’t worry because he knows that Samantha got his back. He rolled to the side and his twin pistols flashing with sparks.

He didn’t fire wildly. His shots targeted the weak points he already knew like glowing cracks, the serpent’s exposed joints of the scales, or exposed sockets.

Muzzle flashes lit the arena in rapid bursts. The crystal serpent deflected his first angle, but he adjusted and ricocheted a round off a pillar to strike the softer underside.

"GYAAAAAHHHH!!!"

George met the stone golems on his own. His hammer crashed into granite torsos with bone-rattling force.

The golem swung downward. He braced for it and took the impact on his shoulder, but then he immediately answered with a full-bodied horizontal smash that shattered its midsection, pushing the monster backward.

The headless warrior suddenly lunged from behind him.

Victor’s greenish cleaver carved brutal arcs as he engaged the headless Guardian from the Eighth Floor that was suddenly coming at him.

The warrior dragged its massive blade low before swinging in a heavy diagonal cut.

Victor stepped inside the arc instead of retreating. His cleaver swung and embedded deep into the torso, splitting its ribs apart. Black fluid spilled across the stone, but the Guardian kept moving.

It answered with a quick backhand slash that sliced across Victor’s forearm.

He gritted his teeth and pushed forward, then delivered a full-force horizontal swing that tore the headless body in half.

Kade faced the lone crystalline serpent now. Its scales reflected the first punch from his ember gauntlets, sending sparks across the arena.

He adjusted immediately, angling his strikes toward the fractured points Ethan had opened earlier. His flaming impact widened the cracks.

The serpent coiled and slammed into his ribs, knocking him sideways.

He forced himself upright and drove a blazing uppercut straight into the softened underside of its jaw while it was preparing another bite at his head, shattering its skull in a burst of crystal shards.

Daniel locked onto the shadow Guardian. The creature flickered with unstable outlines, waiting for his careless hit to multiply.

Daniel slowed his breathing and watched the rhythm of its core pulse beneath the dark surface.

The beast lunged.

He sidestepped and cut only shallow lines to test its reaction. When the true core flashed for a fraction of a second he stepped in and pierced it with both bluish daggers at once.

The shadow form convulsed and collapsed without splitting.

Clara engaged the bloated mucus Guardian alone. It dropped from above with a wet impact and she didn’t rush it.

She circled carefully, forcing it to lunge first.

When it swelled to burst, she rolled aside and sliced through the thinner membrane along its side.

The creature exploded partially, splattering her armor with foul slime, but the core inside ruptured before it could detonate fully.

The two-headed Guardian from the First Floor reached Myles at the center of the arena.

Both of its bladed hands descended in a crossed arc. Myles raised his short sword to block one attack and twisted his curved dagger to redirect the second attack.

There were sounds of steel shrieking. The force drove him back several steps. One head snapped forward with jaws that were aiming for his throat.

He ducked and slashed across its thigh, drawing thick dark fluid.

"Left side!" he shouted without looking.

Ethan responded instantly.

BANG!

BANG!

Two precise shots struck the exposed shoulder joint. The Guardian staggered.

Myles stepped inside its guard and drove both blades deep across its chest in a crossing slash.

On the opposite side, the basalt rhino Guardian from the Second Floor crashed into George.

The impact sent him skidding across the stone.

He coughed as blood touched his lip, then planted his feet and charged back.

His hammer slammed into the glowing crack beneath the creature’s neck. 𝒇𝒓𝒆𝒆𝙬𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝒎

The beast answered with a horned shove that bruised his ribs, but George roared again more deviantly and brought the hammer down again, crushing through its fractured plate.

Above them, the winged guardian monster finally managed to break through Samantha’s arrow line.

It dove low and raked a talon across Ethan’s back before she could fully reposition.

Cloth tore and blood sprayed. Ethan dropped to one knee.

"What the fuck are you doing, Sam?!," he cursed loudly, forcing himself up and firing upward.

"Ouch, sorry. Won’t happen again!" Samantha said with a grimace of guilt, then adjusted her angle and released a clean shot through the predator’s wing joint.

The creature spiraled down hard, and Ethan finished it with two rounds to the skull before it could rise again.

The stone golem Guardian from the Sixth Floor advanced slowly, fists grinding together.

It caught Kade in the middle of its turn and clipped his shoulder, nearly driving him into the ground.

Before it could follow through, George intercepted it with a heavy swing that cracked its torso.

Kade recovered and drove burning punches into the fissure until the golem collapsed into rubble.

Kade nodded to George as a grateful gesture. George nodded back.

The arena grew slick with blood and residue. Clara slipped from them, and the crystalline serpent’s tail grazed her thigh before it fell.

Victor’s breathing turned heavy after the headless Guardian’s last strike cut him. George’s ribs throbbed. Ethan’s back burned. Kade’s side ached where the serpent hit him. Daniel’s sleeve darkened with a shallow cut.

Lilian remained near the platform, calm and observant. Her eyes moved from one clash to another as if memorizing their movement.

They were bleeding, bruised, and cut now. Exhaustion pressed against their muscles.

However, none of them slowed as if pain instead sharpened their focus.

George lifted his hammer again with a hoarse laugh. Kade’s gauntlets flared brighter with ember. Samantha drew faster and aimed better.

"Keep pushing!" Myles said.

The remaining Guardians roared in defiance. The group answered with even greater force.
