Chapter 427: Upgrades..

Sunshine finally leaned back against her chair and took a few deep breaths. It seemed like simple work, but the job was tasking on her energy. She had to take a few sips of coconut bean juice that she kept in a refrigerator near her workstation in the space.

[Host, may I ask a curious question?]

She closed the cap on the bottle. "Go on."

[You obviously know that the stone is dangerous. Why choose to use it anyway? What if this was the watchers plan all along?]

Sunshine shrugged. "We have many what ifs and so little answers. All I know is that we need to be strong enough to fight back against the creatures the apocalypse has birthed. I am using the stone in its natural form; I have not attempted to extract its power with tools. I have simply broken it down into little pieces which will allow superhumans absorb the power naturally in small amounts. If you thought this was dangerous, you would have stopped me."

[I did not stop you because there has never been anything like a thermal band with a piece of the prime core. If it works out as you planned, it could become your unique product in the galaxy.

And I already informed the council about what you are doing. They are quite interested in your project too. Of course, they would rather have every piece of the prime core you collect but they have no choice but to respect your wishes.]

Sunshine’s eyes were drawn to her thermal bands. She noticed immediately that she was two short. She gasped. "You stole from me!"

Suddenly, it became so much louder in the space with notifications dropping in.

[Congratulations host, you are upgrading right now.]

Her statistics appeared before eyes on a virtual screen much larger than the usual one. Sunshine gritted her teeth. She would get back to the theft matter later.

Sunshine studied the stats and questions burst out of her mouth before she could stop them. "Zero points!? System where did all my points vanish off to! How can I have zero? ZERO?! First you stole my thermal bands and now"

The system cut her off quickly. [You asked for a space expansion on your next upgrade. Also, each time you requested me to perform a task, points were deducted. Have you forgotten about this?]

Sunshine froze like someone had unplugged her brain. "That’s it? I paid you each time and even if that is the case, there is no way my points reached zero. At least I would have one. One pity point!"

The system interrupted again.

[There is nothing like a pity point besides there is the hammer.]

Sunshine blinked rapidly. "What about the hammer?"

[You asked for a hammer upgrade, host do you need an elixir to joggle your memory?]

Sunshine’s mouth fell open. She had mentioned wanting a hammer upgrade. But the key word was mentioned!

She brought the hammer out of her tool waist bag. It was in its small form as usual, but now curly runes crawled all over it like growing vines. From blue, it glowed red, as if it was on fire. It looked nothing like it had before.

"This looks like it was made by an ancient blacksmith....."

The system explained calmly, as if this wasn’t blowing her mind. [The hammer has upgraded to level 10. It has evolved to become a companion hammer.]

"What does that even mean!?"

[It is smarter. Your abilities blend extremely well with it. Its strength has been amplified. Above all, your mind is in sync with the hammer.]

Sunshine squinted. "In sync how?"

[It can take your orders, both quietly and loudly. When it senses danger, it can come to your defense even if you have not summoned it.]

Sunshine screamed with excitement_ loudly, dramatically, unnecessarily. She threw it as far she could. Then, she held out her hand. "Okay. If you’re really in sync with me... come."

At first, there was nothing. Then a whoosh like sound swept through the air and the hammer flew straight into her hand.

She squealed and threw it away again. Then she closed her eyes and whispered the command only in her mind. The hammer still obeyed, landing in her palm.

She placed it down, pointed it and commanded hop. The hammer moved up and down, obeying her command like an eager puppy.

"Roll." Sunshine instructed.

With a metallic giggle, it spun across the floor clattering like a pup tumbling in grass.

[This is not what the companion hammer is intended for.] A less than enthusiastic system said.

Sunshine snorted. "Does it look like its complaining?"

She threw a nail out and commanded. "Fetch."

With another whooshing sound, the hammer rushed away. It returned with a nail stuck to its side.

Sunshine danced in place. "This is actually cool. I don’t care about points anymore! I don’t even need points! I have THIS!"

[You need points.] The system said flatly.

Sunshine held the hammer like someone holding a long-lost treasure. Then her eyes shifted to the Prime Core on her thermal band. "Oh, I’m definitely testing both of you today."

She moved to the living section of the space_ her designated training ground, even though it was originally meant for peaceful activities like sitting and not destroying things. She tightened the band around her wrist and activated it.

As soon as it came to life, a pulse shot up her arm and spread through her body like cold fire. Her breath fogged, and time seemed to slow. She felt more power within her than usual, as if she could weave a blizzard with a single flick of her hand.

"Hoooo... this feels amazing."

She lifted the hammer, runes glowing brighter, shifting faster, humming in sync with her heartbeat.

She swung lightly.

A spray of ice burst from the hammer’s head so suddenly she shrieked and jumped back. "It can do that!"

It was like an extension of her or her abilities.

The frost spread on the ground in perfect patterns, like snowflakes arranging themselves intelligently.

Sunshine laughed, breath turning icy. "This is awesome!"

The Prime Core pulsed and unlocked more of her elemental potential. Electricity crackled around her forearm, mixing with the cold. Her skin shimmered faintly, like ice touched by lightning. She held the hammer firmly and pointed at one of her training targets, a training dummy she had put together for practice.

"Alright. Go."

The hammer launched from her hand instantly, spinning so fast the curved runes produced a trail of fire. Electricity wrapped around it, forming a crackling spiral. It struck the dummy with an explosion of frost and lightning so dramatic Sunshine’s hair almost detached from her scalp.

The dummy vanished; only tiny snowflakes were left behind.

"COME BACK!" she yelled. The hammer zipped back toward her, but she forgot to step aside, so she caught it while stumbling, falling in the most ungraceful manner imaginable.

She lay on the ground, laughing breathlessly. "Okay... okay... I think I need to train more in order to get used to your strength."

She stood up and took a deep breath. "System, thank you for the upgrade."
