Apocalyptic World: Surviving with my husband and my cute little babies-Chapter 201: Situation in Camel Tower
Chapter 201: Situation in Camel Tower
A week passed, and the situation around Camel Tower was nothing like the peace the government had promised.
Instead, the air echoed with gunfire and booming grenades as officers battled the mutated beast.
Unfortunately, the results were far from what the officials had hoped—the beast was incredibly hard to kill.
Residents nearby watched the chaos unfold from their windows, unfazed by the bitter cold.
The extreme temperature had settled at -45 degrees Celsius, and they were slowly adjusting to the harsh conditions.
Many began leaving their buildings, moving from one structure to another, searching for anything that might help them survive—as long as they had proper cold-weather suits.
On the other hand, inside the Paradise shoproom, Elena felt frustrated as she listened to the customers gossip about what the government had been doing these past few days.
Well, her enhanced hearing ability was truly impressive—she could hear people from far away, as long as she focused on them.
She sighed at what she heard and felt like smacking the government for being so careless, completely unaware of the real danger posed by the mutated beast.
She wondered if the military had even shared any useful information about it.
If they kept acting foolishly, they might all end up dead.
"You know, the government’s been working hard to hunt that strange beast, but it’s just too hard to kill," one person said.
"How do you know that?" another asked.
"My son works in their logistics department."
A curious customer leaned in. "I heard rumors that many police officers died during the hunt. Is that true?"
The woman quickly looked around before whispering, "It’s true. That beast seems almost immortal. It’s already killed so many officers."
But the customer didn’t care about the dead officers.
All he could think about was how their deaths meant more vacant positions—maybe even one for him.
"So, do you think they’ll start recruiting civilians?"
"Maybe. I’ll ask my son later."
The gossip continued as Elena focused, trying to gather more information.
But there was nothing new—only that the government had begun opening the base in Building B to take in more refugees, and their forces were still out hunting the mutated beast in the area.
Despite the government’s current troubles, Elena never underestimated them.
The force backing them was still powerful enough to crush anyone in Camel Tower.
But if they provoked her, she would strike back—hard enough to shake them to their core.
As to why the government hadn’t yet forced the residents to submit remained a mystery to her.
Maybe their reputation was so bad that the residents would rather die than live under their control.
For now, at least, the residents had enough to eat two meals a day, and the supplies they collected were used for themselves.
In contrast, the government’s offer was just one meal a day—and it came with a heavy price: residents had to hand over all their supplies.
So, they chose the freedom to manage their own resources instead of being bound by the government.
After all, they were living far better now than they had at the evacuation center.
That’s why, when the government opened the doors of their newly established base in Building B to welcome residents, only a few desperate people went in.
The rest—those who still had the means to survive—chose to remain in their units.
Seeing his wife lost in deep thought, Ethan didn’t interrupt her.
Instead, he quietly began peeling an apple for her to snack on later. As he worked, his gaze never left her—especially her growing belly.
It had been three months since Elena became pregnant, and now, her baby bump was becoming more noticeable, especially when she wore her comfortable clothes.
He let out a soft sigh.
What worried him was that her bump seemed bigger than what the books described as normal.
They had tried using an ultrasound to check the situation again, but some unknown force still interfered with the machine, making it useless.
Ethan was genuinely afraid for Elena. But every time she reassured him, it helped calm his nerves.
"What is it?" Elena asked, noticing the serious look on his face as he stared at her.
"Nothing. I just like watching you; you’re such a beautiful wife," Ethan replied as he moved closer and gently scooped her into his lap.
He loved holding her like this—hugging her while caressing her belly. It gave him peace, as if everything would be okay.
This had become part of his daily routine whenever they were alone.
After a moment, he reached for the plate of peeled apples and offered it to her.
He always made sure she ate enough, especially since she now got hungry so easily.
"What did you read this time? Your pickup lines are getting more outdated," Elena teased.
"Wife, I don’t need to read those books anymore. Right now, my main focus is reading about pregnancy and post-birth care. I’ve learned a lot already," Ethan replied, kissing her cheek and gently sniffing her hair.
’So fragrant and smooth.’
"Oh, you’re still reading that book? I thought you had already finished it? Well, should we read it together?"
"There are a lot of detailed cases about pregnancy and child care in there, and I want to be well-prepared. Alright, let’s read it together every night before bed."
Elena nodded, interested and eager to learn more about pregnancy and parenting.
"By the way, what were you thinking about earlier?" Ethan asked, curious about her thoughts.
"I was just wondering why the military hasn’t arrived yet. Uncle Kaiser said they’d be back in a week, but there’s still no news. Do you think something happened to them?"
"Don’t worry. Brother Elias and General Kaiser may act laid-back, but believe me, they’re more than capable of keeping themselves alive."
Of course, Elena knew how strong those two were, but she couldn’t shake the uneasy feeling that lingered in her chest.
"Well, let’s wait a few more days then," she sighed and then continue.
"The government officials are handling that mutated cat recklessly. I just hope the military arrives soon to stop this madness. It’s such a shame that these police officers are dying because of the government’s careless orders."
In truth, Elena had already warned them, but they hadn’t taken the Paradise shop seriously, thinking the staff just wanted to make them surrender on their bet.
"Let’s not think about them anymore. Let’s head back—you might be hungry."
Elena nodded, and soon after, they entered the space.
The next day, everyone gathered in the Paradise meeting room as Jetro shared the latest government updates.
"Yes, the government announced they’ll begin distributing supplies."
Everyone raised their brows, surprised and suspicious.
What had made the government suddenly become generous?
