Chapter 64: Nothing but flies

Before Elena and Ethan could approach the help desk, they overheard a crowd gathering in the evacuation center’s hall, discussing the situation with an officer.

"Officer, there are too many people on my area. Can you open another tent to accommodate more?" a woman pleaded.

She was assigned to the most crowded area, where the noise was unbearable. She desperately needed a quiet place to gather her thoughts.

"Just wait for a moment; the other officer is currently setting up more tents," an officer responded

Another citizen asked, "Officer, is there a way to get a free ride out of this city?"

"We’re currently overwhelmed and short-staffed as we continue rescue efforts. If you need to leave City C for another city, we recommend heading to City B. The road to City F is blocked by a collapsed mountain."

Hearing this, panic rippled through the crowd. The world they knew had changed so instantly.

"What’s the government’s long-term plan, officer?" another person asked.

He was torn between staying in the city he loved or leaving for a new one. He wanted to know if the government had plans to rebuild.

"The government is doing its best right now. We’ll definitely rebuild our city, but for now, we can only take one step at a time," the officer replied honestly.

But an angry citizen rebutted, "Your actions are not enough! Look around! People are stealing and harassing others; they no longer respect the law. Please send some officers to restore security! We’re afraid of this disaster, and now we live in fear of the chaos and violence in our area!"

"Rest assured, sir, we have already addressed this issue," the officer replied.

Everyone was struggling to cope with the aftermath of the disaster.

After assessing the situation, Elena and Ethan decided to leave the evacuation center and head toward City B.

As they walked, they saw countless people fleeing City C, carrying their belongings.

Their faces were etched with struggle, fear, and wariness.

Elena and Ethan quickened their pace, refusing to take breaks and eager to reach City B as soon as possible.

"Wife, look at the sky; it’s dark. Do you think it will rain soon?" Ethan asked while glancing up.

"I think so. Let’s hurry," Elena replied, matching his urgency.

They soon found a secluded area and pulled out their motorcycle, ready to hit the road.

After hours of traveling, they finally spotted the bridge to City B, where a long line of people and vehicles stretched ahead, all waiting to cross.

Confusingly, the individuals monitoring the bridge and collecting tolls weren’t government employees but a group of bald individuals covered in intricate tattoos.

Elena and Ethan exchanged glances.

They both understood that the criminals had taken over the bridge. It would be great if they could pass through safely by paying the tolls, for they didn’t want to draw too much attention.

But if they demanded too much, Elena wouldn’t back down. She wasn’t someone who could be easily bullied. In her past life, she had killed too many to count.

They observed the situation from a distance, knowing it was wise to assess their enemy first. Using a telescope, they focused on the criminals and their activities.

These criminals seized control of City B’s government after the earthquake by exploiting the city’s lack of a strong military presence.

After taking over, they divided the city into five territories, each ruled by a different criminal leader. Now, the bridge was under the control of the Iron Gang.

"The same rules apply: get out of the car, and leave all belongings behind for a thorough inspection," a bald man with a menacing smile ordered.

The car occupants lined up obediently, allowing the gang members to inspect their belongings. They knew these men were criminals, but they felt powerless.

According to the officers from City C, this was the only route connecting to other cities since the road to City F was blocked.

"There are five of you—three adults and two children. You have to pay in gold or cash."

The person in the car quickly handed over the money, knowing that safety was their priority, regardless of the cost.

"Here’s the money, officer. Can we go now?" the driver asked, anxiety evident in his voice.

"Sure! Boys, take their belongings and let them pass through," the bald man replied with a smirk.

The driver was shocked. The criminals had already extorted a significant amount of money, yet they still wanted to rob them of their possessions. But he didn’t protest; they passed through without their belongings.

"Such a waste. The other woman has a nice figure but an ugly face," one of the gang members laughed.

"Just close your eyes; you just have to feel the body," another chimed.

"Maybe you can do it, but I’m picky"

"Enough talking! There are still a lot of people waiting. I’ll make sure you can pick later." The boss reprimanded the horny boys.

After observing the scene, Ethan felt that these criminals were well-trained.

"Wife, these criminals are highly organized. There are at least ten of them, and each one is armed. We have to be careful later," he warned.

"Hmmp, haist! The apocalypse hasn’t even fully descended yet, but the criminals are already starting to rule the city. Where are the military and government forces in City B?" Elena asked.

"This city doesn’t have many military officers. Maybe these criminals are aware of that and decided to seize control."

As they continued to watch, their attention was drawn to a woman being harassed by the gang members.

"Please, officers, just take my belongings and money. Leave the car for me to drive," she pleaded with desperation in her voice.

"Why are you overreacting? We’re just making sure you don’t have anything dangerous," one of the criminals sneered.

But the bald man continued to touch her inappropriately, making her visibly uncomfortable.

"Good! You’re good! You can pass now," he said with a smirk.

Everyone around raised their brows, confused by what the bald man meant by "good."

With a wink to the other gang member, the bald man signaled for the tolls to be opened. The woman was allowed to pass through, but not without one of the criminals following closely behind her.

"What a beauty. I’ll definitely have my way with her later," one of the criminals said with a lewd grin.

"We can do it both. Let’s have some fun with her together," another chimed in, laughter echoing among them.

The bald man was in a good mood, pleased that they had found such a beautiful woman with an enticing figure to entertain them for the night.

’What a good day!’ he thought, eager to finish his tasks quickly.

"Okay, next! Move faster. There are a lot of people behind you. We have to inspect them before evening, or else you’ll be stuck here waiting for us tomorrow," he barked, his tone shifting to one of impatience.

Elena couldn’t help but frown as she observed the criminals.

They were nothing more than animals, becoming a monster in the making.

’Maybe killing them would benefit this world’

After waiting for a couple of minutes, it was almost their turn. Ethan and Elena had dressed in rags to avoid attracting attention, blending in with the desperate crowd.

There were only five more inspections before it would be their turn when suddenly, a gunshot rang out.

’BANG!’

People immediately dove for cover in their cars, panic spreading like wildfire. Elena and Ethan stayed low, watching from a distance.

They heard a man shout, "No one can take my wife, or else I’ll fight you to the death!"

Moments later, a series of gunfire erupted, shattering the tense silence.

"Boss, he’s dead," one of the criminals reported.

"Take his beautiful wife. You know what to do," the bald man ordered, a sinister grin spreading across his face.

"Thank you, boss, for the gift," another criminal replied eagerly.

"Kill all the people here. Leave no one alive," the bald man commanded, his voice cold and ruthless.

’It’s best to kill these people, and loot afterwards.’

Hearing their words, Elena felt a surge of anger. She didn’t want to act, but the thought of these criminals wanting to kill her husband ignited a fierce determination within her.

’Urggg..How dare these criminals’

She turned to Ethan with a serious expression and said, "Let’s kill them all."

Before Ethan could respond, Elena was already on her feet.

"Hey! I give you two options: you kill yourself, or I hack you to death."

The crowd fell silent, stunned by the young woman’s bold words. The criminals, however, erupted into laughter.

"Lady, even though you’re dirty, I could still close my eyes to—"

BANG!

Before he could finish his sentence, he collapsed to the ground, with a bullet through his head.

Shock rippled through the crowd, and the remaining criminals instantly became highly alert.

Elena didn’t want to waste words, but today was different. She needed an outlet for her anger, and the criminals had provided the perfect timing.

The Heaven seemed to conspire against her, and these criminals acted like gods when, in reality, they were nothing but flies.

’Kill me? Who do you think you are?’

The remaining gang members were furious, but before they could retaliate, Elena had already taken down six out of ten of them.

Thankfully, the well water and spiritual energy from the Golden Tablet had enhanced her reflexes and movements.

Gunfire erupted as the criminals began firing in every direction,

BANG!

But within minutes, they lay lifeless on the ground.

Elena had killed them all.

Ethan stood frozen, speechless at the sight of his wife.

’This is my wife? So domineering! But RECKLESS!’

"Wife! What are you doing?" he exclaimed.

Ethan nearly had a heart attack. He knew he had to teach his wife about the dangers of such carelessness.

Elena had been contemplating how to explain to her husband that the woman he married was not a delicate bunny but a deadly rose.

She turned to him, her expression serious. "This is what I am, husband. Get used to it."

With that, she playfully kissed his cheek.

Ethan was now speechless at his wife’s antics.

Elena continued, "Husband, don’t worry. Let’s first leave this bridge."

Unbeknownst to them, one of the criminals hiding nearby suddenly dashed away, frantically intent on reporting to their boss.
