Chapter 125: 124 photos: Return_1

On Monday noon, when Chen Gang and Jiujiu returned from school, Chen Gang resisted for a long time during lunch before finally saying, "Auntie, I can’t live here anymore. Tutor me at lunchtime and I’ll go home to review in the evening."

Xiaobei looked confused, "Are you worried about causing trouble for Auntie?"

Chen Gang nodded, "Plus, I’m not sure about my mom being at home." Although his stepmother didn’t dare to starve him openly, she always seemed half-hearted in her care.

"Alright, then focus on studying in the afternoon, and go home to prepare and review in the evening." Xiaobei thought about it, because their places were indeed not enough.

In the following days, Xiaobei felt incredibly busy. There were articles to translate, English stories to compile, tutoring for Chen Gang, and teaching four children English.

Without realizing it, Zhanguo had been away for twelve days. Every night when she lay in bed, her uncontrollable yearning would burst forth. She wondered where was he? Was he injured?

In the middle of the night, a sleeping Xiaobei felt the bed next to her sink, snapping her awake. She opened her eyes to see a dark figure next to her. Just as she was about to scream, her mouth was covered, and a deep, magnetic voice came from beside her, "Girl, it’s me!"

Zhanguo was back! Xiaobei’s initial panic transformed into surprise, her eyes shining brightly in the dark at Zhanguo, who was covering her mouth and leaning over her.

Zhanguo gently released his hand and was about to get up when Xiaobei pounced on him. Xiaobei twisted the flesh at Zhanguo’s waist, whispering angrily, "How did you get in? You want to scare me to death, don’t you?"

Zhanguo lay on the bed, watching Xiaobei, who was straddling him, behaving like a fierce cat, he couldn’t help but laugh, "I came in through the window, afraid of waking the children in the living room."

"Thank goodness, I’m brave. Anyone else would have been scared to death." Xiaobei grumbled with a serious face. Not feeling satisfied, she moved in and gave Zhanguo a bite on his neck.

"You’ll think twice before you scare me again!" she warned, after releasing her bite.

Zhanguo wrapped his arms around her back, his voice low, "Girl, I missed you."

Xiaobei was taken aback. This was the first time this man had expressed his feelings for her so directly. Overjoyed, she buried her head in Zhanguo’s neck, "I missed you too, very much, very much."

After a quiet moment, Xiaobei asked, "Did you eat?" As she spoke, she got up to switch on the light.

"I just ate something random at the camp." Zhanguo answered truthfully.

"Are you injured? Quick, take off your clothes, let me see." Under the light, Xiaobei scrutinized him carefully, her eyes full of anxious worry.

"No."

When she heard Zhanguo’s answer, Xiaobei felt relieved, "I’ll fetch some water for you to wash." She said, preparing to get off the bed.

"You don’t need to, I’ve already showered at the camp."

Xiaobei whipped her head around, her eyes twinkling mischievously at Zhanguo, "So, you freshened up and presented yourself at my doorstep?"

"What?" Zhanguo was a bit baffled.

Xiaobei didn’t explain, instead, she pounced on him, pulling off his clothes, and her small mouth passionately met his.

Zhanguo finally understood. It turned out his little girl was suggesting this. He fully cooperated with Xiaobei as she stripped off his clothes...

The midnight romance resulted in Xiaobei waking up late. She jumped out of bed in panic. Oh no, she hadn’t prepared breakfast for Jiujiu.

She got off the bed, tying up her hair as she walked out of the bedroom, to find that Jiujiu was already eating breakfast at the Eight Immortal Table.

There were boiled eggs, rice porridge, pancakes, and a small dish of pickles on the table. Clearly, Zhanguo had prepared breakfast early in the morning.

"Where’s your uncle?" Xiaobei complained inwardly, "What’s with him, disappearing the moment he got out of bed."

"Uncle went to fetch water." Jiujiu replied, his little cheeks stuffed. Recently, Jiujiu’s pale face had become rosy and plump under Xiaobei’s care, and his hair, though still yellow, was shiny.

Jiujiu’s words weren’t even out of his mouth, and Zhanguo entered the room carrying a wash bin in one hand and a tooth bowl in the other. "Get up, perfect timing. Brush your teeth and wash your face, then have breakfast," he said.

Xiaobei realized he had fetched water for her to wash her face and couldn’t help but gloat, whispering, "I thought you took off after taking advantage."

Zhanguo was slightly embarrassed, "Behave yourself in front of the kid. Go and wash up quickly."

Xiaobei laughed as she went to brush her teeth. After freshening up, she sat at the dining table and saw Jiujiu holding porridge, "Jiujiu, I told you to drink a cup of milk powder every morning, why are you drinking porridge?"

"Auntie, the rice porridge that uncle made is so yummy, I want to drink it." Jiujiu puckered his lips after saying it.

Considering they were having pancakes, eggs, and porridge for breakfast, life wasn’t that bad. She didn’t say anything and started eating the porridge handed to her by Zhanguo.

After eating, Xiaodong and Dadong came and called Jiujiu to go to school. After sending off Jiujiu, Xiaobei noticed Zhanguo was still at home, with no intention to leave.

"Don’t you have training today?" Xiaobei curiously asked. This man was known to be a dedicated and ideal soldier.

"I can take a few days off, I don’t need to go." Zhanguo replied while cleaning up the dining table.

"Oh, then how about we go to the city one of these days?" Xiaobei still wanted to knit sweaters. The weather in Northwest cooled down early, and it was almost the end of September, she needed to hurry.

"Let’s go on Saturday. I have to drive to the military area for work on Saturday. After you are done with your shopping, we’ll come back together in the evening." Zhanguo suggested after thinking for a while.

"Okay, I’ll ask Li Fengmei if she wants to come. I’ll leave the keys with Jiujiu later and they can come back and cook their own lunch." Xiaobei happily said.

Zhanguo didn’t tell Xiaobei that he was called to the military district to be questioned, because they adopted Jiujiu, as a result, their expenses increased, and some people reported that their money was questionable.

Yesterday, after returning from a task, he had just arrived at the barracks when he received a call from Min Zhonghua, the captain. Though they trusted Zhanguo’s character, the report was supported by evidence, they had no choice but to follow the procedure, and asked him to come in for questioning, to clarify matters.

After hanging up the call, Zhang Lijun who was present reflected, "Does this have anything to do with your visit to the Army Academy in H Province last spring? That place is comparable to the renowned West Academy of Military Science of D Country. After this study stint, you will have a bright future in the army."

However, Zhanguo was lost in his thoughts. Only the people in the camp knew they had adopted Jiujiu, and among them who was most resentful of Xiaobei was Xiangmin.

But if Xiangmin reported him, how did she manage to submit the letter? And why did Guo Huaqiang, who presumably wouldn’t disclose his trip to the military school, happen to report him at this time? Was it a coincidence? Or was it deliberate?

Of course, he couldn’t let Xiaobei know this and have her worry too. He wanted her world to be free from too much deceit, a simple and happy life would do.

Naturally, Xiaobei was unaware of Zhanguo’s worries and was considering whether to meet up with Qin Li during their trip to T City. With inconvenient transportation and communication, it was indeed difficult.

"Can we return later? I want to meet Qin Li." Xiaobei discussed with Zhanguo.

"We can, my work won’t finish quickly either." Zhanguo nodded.

"By the way, did I tell you about Chi Xiaoyue?" Xiaobei suddenly sprang up.
