Chapter 126: Chapter 125: Impression_1

Lu Zhanguo frowned in confusion: "What’s the matter with Chi Xiaoyue?"

Gu Xiaobei leaned in to Lu Zhanguo with a gossiping look: "It’s about Chi Xiaoyue carrying Gao Dailin’s child."

Lu Zhanguo was taken aback, he remembered Gu Xiaobei vaguely mentioning that Chi Xiaoyue knew Gao Dailin previously. If Chi Xiaoyue had Gao Dailin’s child, would Chi Xiaoyue also be problematic? Why did he overlook this lead until now?

Seeing Lu Zhanguo deep in thought with a furrowed brow, Gu Xiaobei felt a tinge of jealousy and said: "What, you’re worried about Chi Xiaoyue?"

Lu Zhanguo looked at the jealous little face in front of his eyes and couldn’t help but chuckle: "What nonsense are you speaking? I’m just wondering if Chi Xiaoyue knows what Gao Dailin has done."

"She must know. I overheard at the Xinhua bookstore, there was a man , harshly telling her, that she can’t even handle a man, to be careful next time." Gu Xiaobei dismissively said.

"How did you hear about this?" Lu Zhanguo frowned.

"I eavesdropped..." Gu Xiaobei suddenly stopped talking, forgetting about Lu Zhanguo’s earlier advice of not being rash in his actions.

Lu Zhanguo sighed: "Alright, what were you listening to?"

Gu Xiaobei cherry-picked a couple of points and said: "Jiujiu and I went to the bookstore to buy notebooks, and happened to overhear this." She would never admit to being caught eavesdropping.

Lu Zhanguo looked at Gu Xiaobei’s shifty eyes and knew that she was lying. He sighed, this mischievous girl was too curious and bold to listen to advice.

Gu Xiaobei told Li Fengmei about her plans to go to the city on Saturday. Li Fengmei thought it wouldn’t be appropriate to tag along when it was just the two of them going, so she happily said: "You and old Lu can go, I’ll watch the children at home. Just invite Jiujiu and Chen Gang to have dinner at my place."

"Didn’t you say you wanted to buy some yarn? We have a car now, otherwise, we would have to take the bus, which is much more troublesome." Gu Xiaobei was confused.

"Can you bring back 2.5 kgs of rusty red pure wool yarn for me and three kgs of bright red? I have nothing else to buy except some yarn to knit a sweater for my son Lijun and two for Fenghua." Li Fengmei said.

"Oh, okay, do you need anything else?"

"No, just remember to invite the two kids over for dinner, otherwise, they definitely won’t come." Li Fengmei knew that the Chen siblings were sensitive and had a strong sense of pride.

"Alright." Gu Xiaobei didn’t argue with her.

Because Lu Zhanguo was home at noon, Gu Xiaobei pulled two semi-mature cabbages from the vegetable patch. She prepared to blanch them in boiling water, chop them up and mix them with the stewed and chopped vermicelli to make a filling for the pancake.

While Gu Xiaobei was cooking, the commissary from the camp came to call for Lu Zhanguo, saying there was a phone call for him.

On the way, the commissary told Lu Zhanguo that the call was from his mother, Wen Xiuqing, and that she had urgent news for him, and he must call her back as soon as possible.

Lu Zhanguo was puzzled. He had been raised in a military camp by his grandfather since he was a child. But his mother was not close to him and favored his youngest son, Lu Aiguo more. He recalled that his mother had only initiated one phone call in all his years at the army - to trick him into getting married back home, and since then she had not contacted him again.

Lu Zhanguo was at the office and as soon as he dialed the number, he heard a stern female voice from the other side: "Hello, is this Zhanguo?"

"Yes, it’s me, mom. Do you have an urgent matter?"

"Without me reaching out, would you even remember you have a mother?" Wen Xiuqing replied, sounding irritated.

Lu Zhanguo was bewildered and did not respond. Wen Xiuqing, familiar with her son’s temperament, continued: "I heard you adopted two children? Where did you get the money?"

"Where did you hear that?" Lu Zhanguo recalled the letter of complaint from the military district and asked with a frown.

"Does it matter where I heard it? How much do you earn in a month? Yet you’re raising two children for other people. Was it your idea or Xiaobei’s?" Wen Xiuqing questioned vehemently.

"It was me who asked Xiaobei to do this."

"Enough, stop protecting her all the time. Just because she’s young doesn’t mean you need to defend her in everything. I was against this marriage from the very beginning. Given the trouble Xiaobei’s brother is in now, can it not affect you? And about Xiaobei, on our wedding day, her face looked so long, as if someone was forcing her. And calling me "mom" was done so reluctantly. Do you think she can live a genuine life with you? You better think it over while you two don’t have children yet." Wen Xiuqing finally let out all her dissatisfaction.

"Gu Xiaodong is Gu Xiaodong, Xiaobei is Xiaobei, we are very well together, you don’t need to worry." Lu Zhanguo didn’t quite like his mother speaking this way about Gu Xiaobei.

"If I don’t worry, do any of you siblings ever make it easy for me? I also heard that Xiaobei was pregnant, wanted to abort the baby, and went to the hospital to get it done. And you just let her? Sooner or later an accident is going to happen."

"Xiaobei is good, I hope you don’t listen to these rumors. The child is gone, it was just an accident." Lu Zhanguo felt Wen Xiuqing must have been instigated by Yuan Tan. But how did Yuan Tan know about Xiaobei’s miscarriage?

"An accident? You’re already 31, Aiguo is five years younger than you and his child is already four. I see it now, that Xiaobei does not want to live happily with you. I also heard she has a childhood sweetheart in T City." Wen Xiuqing said some angrily.

"Mom, I don’t know where you’re getting these rumors from, Xiaobei isn’t like that. We both have a good relationship. If you’d rather believe an outsider than your own son, then you probably shouldn’t have made this call." Lu Zhanguo felt a bit angry, his words a little harsher than usual.

"Fine, all sons forget their mothers once they take a wife. I’m just afraid you’ll make a mistake, you think I want to interject?" Wen Xiuqing said angrily.

"You can rest assured, I know what I am doing."

"Alright, it’s like I was talking nonsense." Wen Xiuqing hung up the phone with an irritated "click".

Lu Zhanguo hung up the phone and stared out the window in contemplation. It appeared someone was secretly not only investigating Gu Xiaobei’s past, but also knew a lot about their family’s affairs. The only person who could go to his mother to discuss such matters was Yuan Tan, but what kind of connections did she have in T City?

Guo Huaqiang knocked on the door and walked in. "Aren’t you taking a break? Why did you come to the office?" He spoke while pulling out a cigarette and throwing one to Lu Zhanguo.

"I came to answer a call." Lu Zhanguo accepted the cigarette but did not light it up, just held it in his hand and fiddled with it.

"Oh yes, this Saturday, when you go to the military district, can you bring the Qi family along? They just received a call from the military district in the morning asking them to attend a meeting." Guo Huaqiang lit up his cigarette and took a puff.

"Alright, do you need me to bring anything?" Lu Zhanguo asked casually.

"No, a few days ago, Xiangmin went to the city and bought a lot of things." Guo Huaqiang said seemingly helpless.

Lu Zhanguo nodded, gave Guo Huaqiang a glance, but unintentionally saw Guo Huaqiang scratching near his browbone and then touching the back of his neck. Lu Zhanguo squinted, as a special forces soldier, psychological courses were fundamental. For an exceptional soldier like Zhanguo, every glance and movement would trigger their alertness.
