Chapter 519: Chapter 511: Cold Gun_1

Everyone was taken aback by Lu Zhanguo’s sudden outcry.

Gu Xiaobei, panicked, clung to Xiaopang and Mo Wang, dropping to the ground and pressing the two children tightly under her.

Lu Songyuan overturned the table, tucking Wen Xiuqing and Doudou under his arm.

Bai Xiaolan, with her large belly, stood bewildered, unsure of what to do. Ji Xiangdong had already leaped over, holding Bai Xiaolan tightly and exposing his back to the hill behind.

With a "bang" sound, the air filled with the scent of gunpowder.

From the moment Lu Zhanguo shouted for everyone to drop down to when the gunshot sounded, only a few seconds had passed.

Gu Xiaobei was trembling with fear, hugging the two kids even tighter, ensuring that they weren’t in danger.

Lu Zhanguo urgently said, "Brother, quick, take your wife to the truck. Dad, hurry and follow as well. Xiaobei, carry the kids, go! Quick!" Ji Xiangdong was already rushing towards the truck with Bai Xiaolan in his arms. The second shot echoed, landing where Ji Xiangdong had just run from, stirring up a cloud of dust.

Lu Songyuan, having experience on the battlefield, took the overturned table and held it at his side. He hugged Wen Xiuqing’s shoulder, reminding her to hold Doudou as they hurried towards the truck.

When Lu Zhanguo prepared to run towards the bushes, he saw Gu Xiaobei still lying in place.

He turned back to Gu Xiaobei, helped her up, and took the two children from her.

Gu Xiaobei almost sounded like she was crying: "You quickly take the kids and leave. My legs are weak, and I can’t get up. You should go."

Lu Zhanguo’s lips were tightly pursed as he didn’t say a word. He put Xiaopang and Mo Wang into Gu Xiaobei’s arms and commanded, "Hold them tight!" Then he took Gu Xiaobei and the children in his arms, backed towards the hill, and ran sideways towards the truck.

Ji Xiangdong asked Bai Xiaolan, who had been terrified senseless, to sit down by the truck and ran back to meet Lu Songyuan.

When Lu Zhanguo came back carrying Gu Xiaobei and her two children, Wen Xiuqing, who had sharp eyes, noticed that Lu Zhanguo’s back was dripping with blood, "Zhanguo, are you injured?"

Gu Xiaobei, now not caring about her fear, continuously asked in a trembling voice, "Where are you injured? Is it serious?"

Lu Zhanguo put Gu Xiaobei down and didn’t have time to answer her question. He said to Ji Xiangdong, "Watch them here. I’ll go have a look."

"It’s too dangerous. Don’t go." Wen Xiuqing started to cry.

Gu Xiaobei wanted to cry, but she couldn’t. She was too scared and sat on the ground, hugging the two children.

Xiaopang and Mo Wang finally regained their senses and began to sob.

Lu Zhanguo said, "They didn’t fire a third shot, which means they’ve retreated. I’ll have a look, you take care of everyone else." With that, he turned around and ran into the bushes like a swift leopard.

As Lu Zhanguo turned around, Gu Xiaobei noticed that Lu Zhanguo’s entire back was soaked in blood and his clothes were ripped to shreds. Tears streamed down her face.

Ji Xiangdong first helped Lu Songyuan and Wen Xiuqing to sit down and took Doudou, who was still looking curious, into his arms. He tried to offer some comfort, "Don’t worry, Zhanguo will be back soon."

Bai Xiaolan took deep breaths and said, "That was too scary. Why are there still people shooting at us?" She was naturally braver. She had even learned to shoot when she was younger, hence her quick recovery from the shock.

Gu Xiaobei tried to stabilize herself and hugged the two kids. "Xiaopang, Mo Wang, don’t be scared, okay? Your mom and dad are here." Normally, she was quite brave, yet ever since having these two children, she had become prone to fear.

Ji Xiangdong held Doudou and comforted Xiaopang and Mo Wang, who were crying hard. He looked stern. Those shots were aimed at him. The first shot clearly hit Lu Zhanguo, who was behind him and had taken the bullet for him. Otherwise, he would definitely be the one injured. The second bullet arrived late because the shooter didn’t take the wind resistance into account. They were sure that the shooter was panicking when firing the second shot, and whether the shot would hit its intended target was purely luck.

Who did he provoke? Who would lay a deadly trap for him like this?

Lu Zhanguo ran to the spot from where the bullet was fired. There were no clues left behind except a patch of grass that had been trampled. On the other hand, the shooter was an expert, managing to erase their traces despite fleeing in panic.

Lu Zhanguo crouched down and carefully identified the direction of the shooter’s escape, all the way into the heart of the Cat Mountain. Upon evaluating the situation, he turned around and returned to the truck. At this point, he couldn’t chase recklessly and had to prioritize his family’s safety.

Upon seeing Lu Zhanguo’s return, Xiaopang, who had just stopped crying, burst into tears again, sobbing, "Daddy, hug, Xiaopang’s scared."

Lu Zhanguo crouched down and hugged his daughter, patting Xiaopang on the back, "Don’t be afraid, Daddy’s here."

Gu Xiaobei, hugging Mo Wang, kneeled down and crawled over. She saw Lu Zhanguo’s bloody back, covered her mouth, and began to cry, "You’re hurt so bad. We should go to the hospital immediately."

Lu Zhanguo reached out to pat Gu Xiaobei’s head, saying, "It’s okay, it’s just superficial wounds."

Lu Songyuan angrily said, "Who did this? Who would dare to shoot people in broad daylight? Did you upset anyone recently?"

Ji Xiangdong, holding Doudou, spoke firmly, "Let’s discuss those matters when we get home. Now we need to pack our things and go back to the city immediately to treat Zhanguo’s wounds."

As Lu Songyuan wanted to pack things, he was stopped by Wen Xiuqing, "You should take care of yourself and Doudou now. We don’t need any more chaos."

Ji Xiangdong, Wen Xiuqing, and Gu Xiaobei hastily packed up their things and threw them into the truck, then drove quickly towards the city.

On the way, Gu Xiaobei held Mo Wang in her lap with one hand and held Lu Zhanguo’s hand tightly with the other, her eyes filled with anxiety.

Wen Xiuqing had just proposed to treat Lu Zhanguo’s wounds temporarily. However, Lu Zhanguo refused.

In Gu Xiaobei’s eyes, this meant that the wounds were severe. Lu Zhanguo didn’t want the family to worry about him. She was filled with heartache and began to cry again.

"It’s okay, they’re just superficial wounds. They’ll be fine once we get to the hospital and apply some ointment," Lu Zhanguo continued to reassure her.

Gu Xiaobei blinked hard to hold back her tears and said, "Don’t talk any more, it’s exhausting. I’m just worried about you. I’m fine."

Ji Xiangdong drove at a much faster speed than when they had come. He asked Bai Xiaolan non-stop, "Tell me if you feel uncomfortable."

"I’m fine. I don’t feel uncomfortable. Be quick, Zhanguo’s back looks so frightening. Even if his wounds are not serious, he can’t keep bleeding like that." Bai Xiaolan was anxious to the point that she felt like she was about to wet her pants and kept urging Ji Xiangdong to go faster.

As fast as they could manage, they arrived at the military hospital. Doctors immediately arranged for Lu Zhanguo to undergo a surgery to remove the shrapnel from his body.

Seeing everyone insisting on waiting outside the operating room, Ji Xiangdong told Lu Songyuan and Bai Xiaolan before going out to find Shen Heng.
