Chapter 589: Chapter 581: Uncle_1

"An uncle and the soldier brought me to the front door," Jiujiu added after she finished speaking.

Gu Xiaobei was surprised. Lu Zhanguo had said the soldier would be back in a few days, and Mo Wang said the soldier was on a mission. How was he now with a stranger?

Mo Wang listened and excitedly widened his eyes. After the soldier climbed Cangnan Mountain to find them, Dad asked the soldier to follow the uncle who mimicked the cuckoo’s call.

Then Mo Wang curiously asked Lu Zhanguo, "Dad, why did you ask the soldier to follow that uncle?"

Lu Zhanguo stroked his small face and said: "The soldier is assigned a mission, it’s our secret ah."

Mo Wang indeed kept the secret upon returning. Now hearing Jiujiu mention the soldier’s encounter with an uncle, his heart leaped with anticipation. Would the soldier come back soon? Was his father also about to return?

Gu Xiaobei lightly stroked Jiujiu’s back: "It’s alright now, hasn’t the soldier already avenged you? He will never dare to do it again."

Jiujiu nodded her head: "Auntie, please don’t tell my mother and grandmother about this."

"Why not?"

"I don’t want them to be heartbroken and sad. From now on, I will be cautious and no longer walk down deserted paths," Jiujiu promised. She couldn’t let Zhuang Shuxian worry at her age.

Gu Xiaobei stroked Jiujiu’s braids, reassuring her: "I won’t tell grandma and the others. From now on, you need to remember not to walk down those deserted places by yourself."

Xiaopang ran to the bathroom, brought back his own face towel: "Sister Jiujiu, wipe your face."

Jiujiu showed a smile on her face and took Xiaopang’s towel to the bathroom to wash her face.

Gu Xiaobei however, felt a sense of fear. If it were not for that uncle and the soldier Jiujiu mentioned, wouldn’t Jiujiu’s life be ruined?

Fearing Jiujiu would be traumatized, Gu Xiaobei ate dinner and then sang English songs with Jiujiu, Xiaopang, and Mo Wang.

Thankfully, Ou Tiannan just threatened Jiujiu. After a bout of crying, she wasn’t as frightened anymore. To not let Gu Xiaobei worry, she laughed and played with Xiaopang.

The next morning, Jiujiu went to school. Gu Xiaobei repeatedly instructed her to walk the main road and return home with any classmates who lived nearby after school.

Jiujiu nodded in agreement. After experiencing a loss, she must learn from it.

Jiujiu arrived at the school gate with her backpack, but saw the soldier and a lone wolf standing on the opposite side of the road, watching her calmly.

"Thank you, Uncle, for yesterday!" Jiujiu ran across the street and sincerely thanked the lone wolf with twinkling eyes.

Lone Wolf felt awkward. He took out a small white flower-patterned handkerchief from his pocket and handed it to Jiujiu: "You dropped this yesterday."

Jiujiu’s face turned red, she took the handkerchief and said softly: "Thank you, Uncle." She loved the sound of Lone Wolf’s voice and how he always appeared when she was in danger. She wished for a father like him.

Lone Wolf looked at the small Jiujiu whose height only reached up to his chest. "Be more careful in the future," he said, then turned and left with the soldier.

Jiujiu watched Lone Wolf’s tall figure gradually disappear under the morning light, her heart suddenly feeling warm.

...

Ou Tiannan woke up languidly in the hospital. The pain told him that he was now useless. Angrily, he pulled out the rubber infusion tube from his arm and threw it frustratedly to the side. Recently, he felt as if he had been possessed as he had been acting impulsively without thinking. Now, it was tough to extricate himself from the aftermath.

Thinking about it, Ou Tiannan suddenly sat up. Enduring the dizzying pain, he pulled on his pants and sneakily slipped out of the hospital to run back to his place. He had to leave right away, or trouble would soon come knocking.

He laid weakly on the bed, intending to wait for the pain to subside before packing his things and leaving.

Before he could leave, Ma Chengwen came knocking. Seeing Ou Tiannan’s miserable state, he couldn’t help but mock: "Were you planning an attack on the older ones or the younger ones, you ended up like this."

Lying in bed smoking, Ou Tiannan shot a glance at Ma Chengwen: "As if you’re much better than me."

Ma Chengwen’s face instantly darkened. Weren’t they both as pitiful as each other? Hadn’t they both become eunuchs?

"Do you want revenge?" Ma Chengwen pulled over a chair and sat across from Ou Tiannan. Now, it was finally his turn to use Ou Tiannan.

"Revenge for what? How so?"

Ma Chengwen grinned mysteriously: "The person we both hate is almost the same. I just hate Lu Zhanguo a bit more. However, he is very unlikely to return this time. The only one left is Ou Ruoshui. Don’t you think both of our miseries were caused by this woman?"

Ou Tiannan flicked his cigarette butt to the ground, his face screwed up in pain: "What do you want to do?"

Ma Chengwen chuckled. He gave Ou Tiannan fake blueprints; he didn’t have the capability to get the real ones. He originally wanted to seek help from Wang Wenbing. However, that old man only wanted to climb up the ranks and was unwilling to help. He not only refused but also asked Ma Chengwen to do something for him – something big enough to stir up the military and political sectors of the provincial city.

Ma Chengwen was no fool. Stirring up the military and political sectors was no simple task like randomly killing someone.

After much thought, he considered Ou Tiannan. Now, seeing Ou Tiannan in such a pitiful state, a wicked idea crept into his mind.

"Would you dare?" Ma Chengwen asked with a smile.

Ou Tiannan thought for a second: "I won’t do anything illegal!"

Ma Chengwen burst into laughter, as if he had heard the funniest joke in the world: "Are you so innocent?"

Ou Tiannan shot a glance at Ma Chengwen, then closed his eyes and said no more.

Ma Chengwen went over his plan once. It startled Ou Tiannan so much he jumped up from the bed, ignoring the stabbing pain in his body: "Have you gone mad? You want to bomb a school? Where would you even get explosives?"

Ma Chengwen confidently replied: "Don’t worry about that. As long as we can provoke a riot on the 8th of May, we can make a clean getaway to a foreign country." This was what Wang Wenbing had promised him.

Ou Tiannan shook his head repeatedly: "Crazy, I think you’ve truly gone crazy. You better go now, and act like you never saw me today."

Ma Chengwen didn’t say much else, prepared to leave. As he approached the door, he suddenly turned around and said, "You aren’t even a man now. What do you still care about?"

Choked by his words, Ou Tiannan sat dumbfounded on the bed, incapable of saying a word.

...

Gu Xiaobei noticed Jiujiu seemed distracted in recent days. While doing homework, she would be lost in thought. Sometimes, she would hold her handkerchief, staring blankly for a long time, but a smile would be on her lips.

"Jiujiu, do you have something on your mind recently?" Gu Xiaobei couldn’t help but ask when she saw Jiujiu staring at her handkerchief again.

With a furrowed brow, Jiujiu looked at Gu Xiaobei and said: "Auntie, what do you think my dad would be like if he were still alive?"

Gu Xiaobei was taken aback. Jiujiu had been missing a father’s love since she was young, and probably deep down had always yearned for a father’s affection.

Seeing Gu Xiaobei remain silent, Jiujiu smiled and said, "I wish my dad was like that uncle so he could protect me!"
