Back To The 80s-Chapter 80 - 79: Escape_1
Lu Zhanguo climbed the stairs, only to see a police officer standing in front of his door, and the amount of blood on the ground surprised him, making him drop the pot he was carrying even though he was a seasoned military man.
Seeing that he was a soldier and the male master of the house, the police officer allowed Lu Zhanguo to enter.
With a twisted feeling in his heart, Lu Zhanguo entered the house to find Gu Xiaobei sitting on the sofa with a pale face. A female officer sat beside her, and on the single sofa sits Song Ming, the criminal police team leader whom he had met before.
Lu Zhanguo quickly strode forward, squatted in front of Gu Xiaobei, took her hand and asked, "Where did you get hurt?"
Gu Xiaobei looked at Lu Zhanguo with bright eyes, "I’m fine, just got a fright." Only then did Lu Zhanguo breathe a sigh of relief where he sat beside Gu Xiaobei, discussing the case with Song Ming.
Gu Xiaobei felt that since she had crossed over, she had a constant run of bad luck, always encountering bloody incidents.
Today, after Lu Zhanguo had left, she took a shower and prepared to wash her clothes when she heard frantic knocking at the door.
As soon as she opened the door, before she could react, she was attacked by a person brandishing a shiny vegetable knife. Gu Xiaobei instinctively leaned back and was pushed to the ground.
Gu Xiaobei saw the vegetable knife swinging towards her and quickly grasped the wrist of the attacker.
The attacker was a middle-aged woman who was relatively fat and strong. With the strength differential between them already significant, and now that she was pinned underneath, Gu Xiaobei gritted her teeth and struggled, feeling that she was certainly doomed this time.
Suddenly, a commanding voice rang out from the entrance, "What are you doing?" Three women in their fifties or sixties ran in.
The middle-aged woman was stunned when she heard the commotion, and the older women behind her each grabbed an arm. Gu Xiaobei took the opportunity to scramble to her feet and, seizing the teapot on the table beside her, smashed it against the woman’s head. From the moment the older women had entered to the point Gu Xiaobei had attacked, only a few tens of seconds had passed.
The struggling middle-aged woman was stupefied by the blow, and an old lady quickly seized the vegetable knife. The middle-aged woman suddenly gathered herself, mustered her energy and burst from the grip of the older women, charging toward Gu Xiaobei.
Gu Xiaobei was prepared to go all out and quickly grabbed a fruit knife from the table and plunged it into the middle-aged woman, putting all her strength into it.
The blade went deep into the middle-aged woman’s shoulder, prompting a pained scream. The woman writhed in pain and fell to the ground.
Then another older woman arrived with a policeman, who quickly subdued the middle-aged woman and led her out.
The older women chattered, "We were chatting at the entrance when we saw this woman charging in."
"Thanks to all the farm work we did when we were young, we’ve got plenty of strength."
"Yes, after that inexplicable explosion last time, we decided that three of us would follow her, while I went to report to the police."
Then Song Ming arrived, and not long after, Lu Zhanguo returned home.
After hearing the account, Lu Zhanguo was also afraid. Without the intervention of the older ladies, Gu Xiaobei might not have escaped this time.
Song Ming said, "Okay, let’s prepare a record for today. When there’s news about the case, I’ll call Captain Lu. Your wife is very brave." He also looked at Gu Xiaobei with admiration.
After Lu Zhanguo had seen off Song Ming, he went over to Gu Xiaobei and said, "I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have left you alone at home." Now he really felt both frightened and guilty.
"It’s okay, I wasn’t injured, and I was just startled. This woman came in and didn’t say a word, she just began attacking," Gu Xiaobei comforted him, knowing about Lu Zhanguo’s fear and concern.
Gu Xiaobei also felt somewhat afraid in her heart, thinking that if her reaction had been a second slower, she might have lost her life.
Lu Zhanguo touched Gu Xiaobei’s face, admiring her courage in the face of death.
As dinner was ruined, Lu Zhanguo put Gu Xiaobei on the bed and told her to lie down. There was no food left, so he prepared to make some plain noodles to eat instead.
No sooner had dinner been served, than Shen Heng arrived, sweating heavily.
Upon entering, he asked Gu Xiaobei, "Are you okay?"
"Yes, have you eaten yet?" Gu Xiaobei’s mood had calmed down significantly.
Shen Heng waved his hand, "You go ahead and eat, I need to speak with Zhanguo."
Lu Zhanguo rose to his feet without a word, and led Shen Heng into the bedroom.
"That woman is Chu Dabiao’s wife. She claimed she was seeking revenge on your wife," Shen Heng, having just come from the police station, lacked much more information.
"Why would she want revenge on Xiaobei? And how did she know where we live? I thought Chu Dabiao isn’t from T City," Lu Zhanguo found this confusing.
"Did you forget? Chu Dabiao recently died mysteriously in prison," Shen Heng reminded him.
Lu Zhanguo squinted his eyes, showing a glimmer of understanding as he fell silent for a moment before saying, "It seems they are becoming desperate."
"Anyway, we have always been out in the open, right? Maybe they just want to give us a warning," Shen Heng just did not understand why they would target Gu Xiaobei specifically.
"It seems they are becoming anxious. Perhaps they’re trying to divert our attention. After all, having a batch of cultural relics in hand is a hot potato." Lu Zhanguo was relieved that Gu Xiaobei no longer went to Fuhai.
"What I’m curious about right now is where they’re hiding all those cultural relics. Can they just disappear into thin air?" Shen Heng found it hard to believe that in such a small city, they could just seemingly vanish.
"Maybe they really did disappear. Since they dared to rob openly, they must have prepared an escape route," Lu Zhanguo felt.
"That makes sense. Anyway, I have to go now. Things are in chaos right now, which means the end is probably near," Shen Heng wished he could clone himself to get all the work done.
After Shen Heng left, Gu Xiaobei asked, "Did he come regarding my incident?"
Lu Zhanguo mumbled in agreement, fumbling with his clumped up noodles.
Gu Xiaobei sighed, "I think I have bad luck with T City. I haven’t been here two months and bad things keep happening. But luckily, I’m leaving tomorrow."
"Yeah, going back to the military camp will be much safer."
"I wanted to visit Qin Li tonight, but now it seems I’ll have to forget about it," Gu Xiaobei was still concerned about the girl.
"You’ll have a chance later. Are Qin Li and Jin Cheng close?" Lu Zhanguo rarely gossiped.
"Close? No, they don’t get along. Qin Li likes Jin Cheng and has for more than ten years, but Jin Cheng, the flippant aider he is, rejected Qin Li, which is infuriating. And Qin Li is like she’s been poisoned; she only wants Jin Cheng," Gu Xiaobei was angry whenever she thought about it.
Lu Zhanguo cleared up the dishes and went to the kitchen, leaving a final remark, "I’ve told you before that what you see isn’t necessarily true."
Gu Xiaobei considered his words carefully: "What isn’t necessarily true, the eyes see?", she couldn’t help but ask from the kitchen door, "Are you implying that Qin Li might not actually be all that fond of Jin Cheng?"
The bowl slipped from Lu Zhanguo’s hand, he found it amusing how this girl, usually clever to the point of being cunning, could misconstrue his meaning. He kept his face straight and responded, "I believe Qin Li’s feelings for Jin Cheng are genuine. What I meant was that perhaps Jin Cheng might like Qin Li too."
Gu Xiaobei rolled her eyes at Lu Zhanguo, "Cut it out, I can’t see any hint of Jin Cheng liking Qin Li."
