Chapter 83: Chapter 82: Fight_1

Gu Xiaobei smiled and said, "You’re being a stranger to us. We didn’t even thank you. Without you, we wouldn’t have vegetables to eat now, let alone in winter".

"Growing a little bit of vegetables doesn’t take much effort, and my family of four can eat them. We’re very grateful to have this piece of land." Li Mei heartily said. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝔀𝓮𝒃𝙣𝓸𝒗𝒆𝒍.𝙘𝒐𝒎

At the entrance of their home, Li Fengmei instructed, "Wash the peppers in the afternoon, dry them, and when it’s cool in the morning, we’ll take them downstairs to chop."

"Okay, just let me know if you need anything." Gu Xiaobei said as she opened the door for Lu Zhanguo.

Lu Zhanguo put down the bucket and said, "I bought two jins of meat. If there’s any left over, bury it in the salt jar."

To Gu Xiaobei’s surprise, she went, "Could that be done? Okay, I’ll make dumplings."

"Hmm, just do what you think is best. I have something to do in the camp and won’t be back for lunch. Prepare something for yourself and don’t make do." Lu Zhanguo felt that he was becoming increasingly worrisome.

"Okay." Gu Xiaobei complied, seeing Lu Zhanguo out. She looked at the bucket full of peppers and found it interesting that people were like squirrels, preparing for winter food early.

Early the next morning, Gu Xiaobei was up. She couldn’t let Li Fengmei have to come and get her again, or else people would say that Lu Zhanguo married a lazy wife.

After a simple breakfast, she went to see Li Fengmei. Li Fengmei asked her to take the large noodle-rolling board downstairs to chop the chili sauce. The chopping board was too small to hold much, and it might splatter everywhere.

Gu Xiaobei first moved two square stools downstairs. She then moved the case board downstairs and placed it on the stool. Carrying the peppers she had washed and dried the night before, the kitchen knife, and the small stool, she went downstairs to prepare to chop the chili sauce. Li Fengmei repeatedly reminded, "When you’re cutting and chopping the peppers, be careful not to let the juice squirt into your eyes."

"Okay." Still excited, Gu Xiaobei nodded in agreement. She found the chopping of the chili sauce quite new and interesting.

In the cool morning, several other military wives came out, some to chop chili sauce, some to slice eggplant to dry in preparation for their winter vegetables.

Gu Xiaobei went downstairs early to enjoy the coolness. She set up her stall at the foot of the residential wall as soon as she entered the family courtyard. Except for Li Fengmei, no one bothered her, and she was happy to be left alone.

Xiangmin came down to dry her quilt and chatted with Li Fengmei. Suddenly, a shout came from the entrance of the courtyard, "Is that how Gu Xiaobei really is? I can’t believe she’s so loose!"

"Of course, can I lie about what I saw? She dared to say such shameless things in public." Gu Xiaobei naturally recognized this voice, it was Li Juan.

Li Juan and another military wife came into the courtyard talking. Seeing that the other military wives in the yard were silent and had a strange look on their faces, she looked in the direction of their eyes and saw Gu Xiaobei sitting in the corner, looking at her coldly, which made her gasp in shock.

Gu Xiaobei slammed her kitchen knife with a "pop" and stood up, saying coldly, "Go on, why did you stop?"

"I didn’t say anything wrong. Everyone in the large courtyard knows you’re not disciplined." Li Juan figured she had already been overheard, so she saw no point in being scared.

"In what ways have I been undisciplined? Tell me!" Gu Xiaobei demanded while walking towards Li Juan.

"Who doesn’t know that you had an affair before marriage, and if you weren’t pregnant and wanting to get rid of the baby, you would have secretly gone to the city to have an abortion?" Li Juan mocked.

Like a young leopard, Gu Xiaobei suddenly pounced. One hand grabbed Li Juan’s hair and the other slapped her face. She then skillfully kicked Li Juan’s leg.

The thing about a fight is to catch your opponent off guard. By the time Li Juan reacted, her face was stinging hot. She shrieked and reached for Gu Xiaobei’s hair.

Gu Xiaobei, who was shorter, suddenly lowered her head and bumped it hard into Li Juan’s chest. Li Juan was unprepared and fell squatting. Gu Xiaobei rushed over and pressed Li Juan down, and the two began to fight.

The others finally reacted, and one of the military wives ran into the camp to call Lu Zhanguo. Xiangmin was the first one to rush up, and she held Gu Xiaobei’s arms from behind. Li Juan took the chance to raise her hand and scratched Gu Xiaobei’s face. Gu Xiaobei got angry and pulled away, with the spirit of a young calf she struggled free and pounced on Li Juan again, rubbing her eyes hard. These were the hands that had just chopped peppers, and with one mournful cry, Li Juan could only cover her eyes and roll around in pain, not caring to fight back.

Xiangmin was also knocked over by Gu Xiaobei’s force and ended up on top of her, making it a pile of three people.

By the time Lu Zhanguo and Wen Dong ran over, Li Fengmei and several others had already pulled the three apart. Gu Xiaobei stood on one side panting heavily, while Li Juan was still sitting on the ground wailing. Xiangmin had brought a wet towel for her to cover her eyes.

Lu Zhanguo was in a meeting when he heard that Gu Xiaobei and Li Juan were fighting. He dropped everything and ran out. Wen Dong was also startled to hear that his daughter-in-law was fighting.

Seeing Gu Xiaobei’s disheveled hair and the three bloody scratches on her fair little face, Lu Zhanguo found it distressing. He asked with a somber face, "What happened?"

On seeing her backer arrive, Gu Xiaobei lost the fierceness of a small leopard just moments before. With teary eyes, she whined, "She said when I married you, I was not a virgin." Lu Zhanguo’s face darkened even more.

"She also said the child we lost was not yours."

"She also said that I’m a loose woman, not disciplined." Gu Xiaobei deliberately paused after each sentence. Seeing Lu Zhanguo’s face turn as black as the bottom of a pot, she closed her mouth.

After hearing that, Wen Dong didn’t know where to put his flushed face. He thought it was just a verbal dispute and didn’t expect his daughter-in-law to throw such dirty water on people. He stepped forward, grabbed Li Juan’s arm, and without a word, dragged her home. Li Juan didn’t expect things to get so out of hand. Though her eyes were still painfully burning, she didn’t dare to make a sound and followed Wen Dong home.

Lu Zhanguo looked around with a dark face and led his wife home without saying a word. Gu Xiaobei kept her head down, not daring to speak, unsure whether her husband was angry or not. After all, a fight among military wives didn’t look good.

Lu Zhanguo led Gu Xiaobei to sit down on a single bed in the outer room, brought a wet towel, smoothed her messy hair on the forehead, and gently wiped her little face with the towel. The sight of the three red scratches hurt his heart, and he couldn’t help saying, "How did you let her scratch your face?"

Gu Xiaobei pouted and said, "If it wasn’t for Xiangmin tilting the balance, she definitely wouldn’t have scratched my face."

Lu Zhanguo, hearing this, also took issue with Xiangmin. He completely forgot that the fight itself was wrong, and being overly protective, said, "Next time you get into a fight, don’t try to show off and hurt yourself."

Next time? There could be a next time? Gu Xiaobei’s little mouth opened wide in surprise and joy, she asked, "You’re not mad at me for fighting?"

"Hmm, even though fighting isn’t right, we also can’t let others bully us." Lu Zhanguo thought that if he were to have a daughter in the future, he would have to teach her some self-defense skills from a young age so that she wouldn’t be bullied.
