Chapter 84: Chapter 83: Harmony_1

Lu Zhanguo was worried about Gu Xiaobei, fearing her injuries would leave scars, he decided to take her to see the medic team. Xiaobei initially didn’t want to go, but when she considered the instigator of the whole drama was also there, she decided to go. Even though she was currently in a bad state herself.

Gu Xiaobei brushed her hair and looked at the three scratches on her face, feeling a bit of resentment towards Xiangmin. She knew their relationship could never be repaired.

When they reached the medic team, they happened to run into Chi Xiaoyue, who was on her way to lunch at the cafeteria.

Upon seeing Xiaobei’s face, Xiaoyue was taken aback. With a somewhat schadenfreude look, she asked, "What happened to your face, sister-in-law?"

As Lu Zhanguo stood silently on the side, Gu Xiaobei grabbed Xiaoyue’s hand. "Today, I fought with Li Juan. In the process, I was scratched. Do you know why I fought her?" Xiaobei had a look on her face as if she was the only one privy to this juicy gossip.

Xiaoyue stood there in a daze, involuntarily asking, "Why?" She wanted to pull her hand back, but Xiaobei gripped it tightly like a vice, leaving her unable to withdraw.

"She told everyone in our community that when I married Lu Zhanguo, I wasn’t a virgin. She even went so far as to say that the child I’m carrying isn’t Lu Zhanguo’s. Don’t you think I should have just ripped her mouth off?" Gu Xiaobei leaned in and gritted out the words one by one into Xiaoyue’s face.

Xiaoyue stood there stunned. She had not expected Gu Xiaobei to be so fierce. She thought about how all of this was because she had casually talked to Li Juan. She stepped back awkwardly, forcing a laugh, "It was right to hit her. Sister-in-law, you should go in quickly, Doctor Li is on duty." She left quickly after saying this.

Gu Xiaobei watched Xiaoyue’s retreating figure with joy. Lu Zhanguo, standing to the side, indulgently said, "Have you had enough fun? Let’s go in now."

Actually, Gu Xiaobei’s face wasn’t in serious condition. Although she was scratched and looked quite frightening, it would all be fine in a couple of days.

Lu Zhanguo only relaxed after the doctor’s reassurances, although Gu Xiaobei herself seemed rather nonchalant about the whole situation. As they left the medical room, she teased Lu Zhanguo, "You’re truly obsessed with appearances. You’re so worried about me getting scars because you’re afraid I’ll become ugly, right?"

Lu Zhanguo was left at a loss for words. Here was this little ingrate of a girl, who despite being such a caring person, would slather her face with cucumber slices every night to maintain her skin, now teasing him for being superficial.

Seeing Lu Zhanguo at a loss, Gu Xiaobei burst into laughter. Served him right for always trying to outsmart her.

After they went home, Lu Zhanguo quickly made some food. He carefully made sure that Gu Xiaobei didn’t eat anything spicy. After dinner, Lu Zhanguo had to return to the barracks due to some work.

When Gu Xiaobei went to wash her utensils, she saw a couple of military wives also washing dishes. Seeing Gu Xiaobei enter, one of them asked out of concern, "Sister-in-law, are you okay?"

Everyone had already seen and understood who was in the wrong today. They never thought that Li Juan would sully someone’s name behind their back, so their sense of justice naturally veered towards Gu Xiaobei now.

"I’m fine, I just couldn’t stand it anymore, that’s why I lost my temper. In hindsight, I regret it. I shouldn’t have resorted to violence." Xiaobei, who had always excelled in social niceties, was quick to align herself with the popular sentiment.

Another wife chimed in, "Sister-in-law, don’t say that. Everyone has their breaking point. Unless they are pushed to the limit, who would want to fight?"

Xiaobei made a show of acting shy, "My Lu said that it doesn’t matter what the reason is, resorting to violence is wrong. He also said that as long as he believes in me, why bother about what others say?" Taking the opportunity to flaunt Lu Zhanguo’s understanding and tacitly warn the gossipers seemed like a good idea.

The wives nodded in agreement, "Yes, as long as the couple is happy, who cares what others say." Feeling regret for being too quick to believe Li Juan’s words.

Xiaobei pursed her lips and smiled, not saying anything more. When she carried her dishes back to her room, she ran into Xiangmin on the way out. Xiangmin looked at her, opened her mouth to speak, but eventually said nothing. Xiaobei didn’t even spare her a glance, she just turned on her heel and returned to her room. She wasn’t going to let Xiangmin off the hook just because she had tried to break up the fight.

Xiangmin had quite a bit of regret, she had simply done what she thought was right at the time. She hadn’t anticipated Gu Xiaobei to be so unyielding during the fight. Despite Li Juan’s size, she barely managed to gain an upper hand. And so, she tried to break the fight up.

Reflecting on it at home, she felt more regret when she saw how tenderly Lu Zhanguo looked after Gu Xiaobei. She also considered the close relationship between her husband, Guo, and Lu Zhanguo. She had, inadvertently, completely offended Lu Zhanguo and his wife.

Zhang Lijun returned home for lunch as well and asked Li Fengmei about the incident. In the afternoon, after his meeting ended, and he couldn’t resist engaging in the gossip. "Fengmei mentioned that sister-in-law was like a little leopard during the fight. Fierce. Calculating. Ruthless."

Lu Zhanguo had never asked Gu Xiaobei about the fight himself. Now, hearing Zhang Lijun describe it in this manner, and feeling a sense of pride, as if his own child had achieved something noteworthy. He looked at Guo Huaqiang and said, "Yes, if it wasn’t for your sister-in-law involving herself, she wouldn’t have had these marks on her face."

Seeing Lu Zhanguo’s protective behavior, Guo Huaqiang felt somewhat apologetic and said, "I’ll have a talk with my sister-in-law."

"No need, let them resolve their issues amongst themselves. We should not get involved," Lu Zhanguo said nonchalantly.

Guo Huaqiang was at a loss for words. It seemed like his friend was definitely taking his wife’s side.

Zhang Lijun chuckled, watching the drama unfold. It was rare to see the normally impartial Lu Zhanguo in such a protective mode.

Gu Xiaobei felt her life had become much better over the next few days. Many of the military wives took the initiative to greet her when they saw her. Li Juan was in a much worse state, with several scratches on her face and her eye swollen for days. As for Xiangmin, Xiaobei pretended she didn’t exist. In her free time, she made chili sauce with Li Fengmei and dried vegetables. When it was hot, she hid in their room translating manuscripts. The good thing about summer in the Northwest was that no matter how hot it got outside, it was always pleasantly cool in the shade or inside the house.

When Lu Zhanguo returned home in the evening, he told Xiaobei that they planned to go to the town’s hospital to visit Qin Mei on Sunday. Shen Heng was also coming.

Xiaobei nearly forgot about Qin Mei, who had inexplicably ended up in the hospital due to a misunderstanding. Actually, she quite liked Qin Mei.

"What is Shen Heng coming for?" Xiaobei couldn’t resist asking about the situation in T City.

"He needs your help with something." Lu Zhanguo helped Xiaobei carry the dishes to the dining table.

"My help? What can I do?" Gu Xiaobei sat down with her meal and chopsticks in front of her on the dining table.

"To ask a few questions. If Yuan Tan is coming along with him, you need to be careful about what you say," Lu Zhanguo thought for a moment and then reminded Gu Xiaobei.

"Oh, I will be careful." Xiaobei naturally knew that some matters are better off known by fewer people.

"So, what should we bring as a gift when we visit Qin Mei?" Xiaobei asked Lu Zhanguo for his opinion.

"Just do what you think is appropriate. We don’t need to be too formal."
