Chapter 55: The Rite of Vitality

Visha frantically examined the wounds on Uri and Xeno.

The spiderweb was stretching as if trying to envelop their bodies.

That’s when she heard it. Fill started screaming. It echoed in the forest. The sound was desperate. Visha turned to see Fil, who had transformed, with a leg that was almost completely black.

She turned back to Uri and Xeno. Their faces were pale, but they didn’t make a sound.

"Are you okay? Are you in pain?" She asked them both. Neither of them answered. The veins were spreading. Visha started to panic.

She looked at the dead wolves, wondering if they were contagious.

Is it because they were bitten? Would they turn into those things?

Panic rose in the camp. Visha didn’t want to move, but she needed to know. She needed to see for herself whether it was the same for everyone. She checked Fil, who was the most obvious.

The same spiderweb of black was crawling up his leg.

"It’s burns..." Cato whimpered. The only sound he made, as the black blood filled his body as well.

"They’ve been infected," Krag gasped. Chi started checking him over, making sure he wasn’t infected as well.

He held her hand, letting her know he was fine.

"I didn’t get injured," he whispered to Chi.

But that didn’t lessen her worry.

[Task initiated]

[The rite of vitality]

[Objective: purify the corruption from your pack before it consumes them completely.]

[WARNING: The process will require significant spiritual energy.]

[Method: Use spiritual energy to weave a pattern of cleansing.]

The sound of the system cut through Visha’s panic. The rite of vitality? She had seen it after the system was upgraded, but she wasn’t sure what it was for. The system didn’t give her time to think before she was flooded with information. 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝚠𝚎𝚋𝗻𝗼𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝚘𝐦

It didn’t come as words. It was like an instinct. Something she was born with and had always known how to do.

Facing Krag and Chi, she asked them to help Uri and Xeno move closer to the Fil and Cato.

Visha’s hands trembled. The information was imprinted in her soul. Although she knew it, it was something she had never done before.

"Willa, you need to take Kit and Nimo and stand back.

Visha looked at Kit and Nimo, who were crying. They looked at their father’s not daring to get close. They had already tried to jump into their father’s arms. But Willa restricted them.

Even if they were beast men, they were still young. Willa was able to control them.

Willa didn’t question it. She only looked back at Fil, whose eyes were filled with despair, he tried to mask.

Krag and Chi brought Uri and Xeno over, sitting them beside the other two men. She nodded to the two as a thank you.

Taking a deep breath, Visha started speaking. "I know none of us are sure what’s happening right now. But I think I have a way to solve it. I am the appointed priestess for the pack. I took on the title with your approval. I know we haven’t seemed like much of a pack so far, but this is only the beginning. I won’t let anything happen to any of you. Just know, you’ve fought bravely."

Visha took a step closer, placing her hands on Uri and Xeno’s knees. "I need you all to be touching."

"Sha-" Uri began.

But Visha cut him off. "Trust me," she murmured. It sounded like reassurance to their ears. Her voice was steady. Her eyes went from Uri to Xeno. Then she looked briefly at Fil and Cato.

"Trust me," she affirmed.

The four men held on to each other, without saying a word.

She closed her eyes, shutting the world out. She reached for the power she knew was inside her. She guided it, knowing she would need it to help them.

A low hum escaped her lips. In the silence, it sounded louder than it actually was. The sound enveloped the four men.

Visha felt the energy, pure and vibrant. She channelled it towards her hands.

The energy swirled from her hands to Uri and Xeno.

As soon as the energy touched the darkness, she felt as if something had slammed into her. Her brows furrowed, yet she didn’t stop. She knew stopping would mean the end of their lives. She wouldn’t allow that to happen.

The corruption was like oily sludge. It tried to fight her as she moved the energy. It was like trying to push against a wave.

Uri hissed, and Xeno let out a low growl. They were feeling it at the same time. The corruption was trying to latch on to them, refusing to move.

The burning of the corruption and the cool sensation of Visha’s power were fighting each other. Visha could see the sludge in her mind’s eye. She saw her energy stripping away the thing trying to hurt her people.

Slowly, agonizingly, the darkness started to recede.

It was pushed out of the wound, leaving only their own blood. The wounds also started to heal.

Visha didn’t stop. She wanted to use Uri and Xeno as conduits.

After the sludge left them, she was able to pass through smoothly, getting rid of any hidden illness they may have had as well.

The process of getting rid of the corruption from Cato and Fil was worse. Their wounds were much larger than Uri and Xeno’s. She felt her willpower and energy dwindle as she tried to remove the corruption.

By the time she was done, her body felt light and hollow. She couldn’t stand. Her entire body trembled.

She smiled, seeing that everyone was corruption-free.

[Rite of vitality complete]

[Corruption purified]

The system chimed in her head to confirm that she indeed removed the corruption.

As soon as the weight was off her shoulders, her body sagged. Her head was lowered as she looked at her hands. Her vision began to swim.

"You’re all okay, she muttered.

Before falling forward and fainting.
