Chapter 106: Chapter 106: Fallen Angel

Meanwhile, beyond the radius of Lion City’s upheaval, three figures hovered in midair. Luke, Elias Vaughn, and Hazel Ross had managed to flee the immediate danger zone.

From this vantage point, they could see the full enormity of the pale, mountainous snail that supported the once-great metropolis on its shell.

Towering spires of cracked concrete jutted out from the snail’s back, forming the broken outlines of city blocks.

"I’ve...never seen anything like this," Elias breathed, steadying himself against gusts of wind that threatened to knock him off-balance. His eyes were wide, flicking between the monstrous form and the swirl of ominous clouds overhead.

"It’s unbelievable," Luke agreed, still trying to make sense of the sight. "A creature of this scale should be radiating raw hostility, but I can’t feel its presence the way I normally sense a demon’s aura."

Hazel Ross, wings of light lifting her gracefully, pressed a hand to her forehead. A faint grimace marred her features. "I know," she murmured.

"Yet something about it feels...wrong. Like it’s not truly alive, or maybe it’s partially dormant. But there’s more. I keep getting this sense of dread—like a fragment of a vision I can’t quite remember."

Luke exhaled sharply, flicking his gaze back toward the snail. "We can’t handle a fight with that thing, especially not in the middle of this storm. And the city itself is crawling with smaller demons, all swarming in."

Before he could say more, two powerful, dark presences cut across the skies. The air turned momentarily cold, and a swirl of black energy eddied above them.

In the next instant, two figures emerged, each with winged silhouettes distinctly different from standard wind magic. Their wings appeared real, made of some midnight substance that cast no reflection.

Luke’s jaw tightened. "Elias," he said under his breath, "these are the tutors from Arcadia Academy—Perola and Laura Adams. But they’re giving off a presence I’ve never felt from typical mages."

Elias narrowed his eyes. "They’re the ones who took off earlier, but I didn’t realize they were this...unusual."

Hazel glanced at them as well, her expression a swirl of confusion and concern. Indeed, the women’s eyes glimmered with a supernatural darkness, and a faint aura of gloom rippled around them.

"Luke!" Perola called out anxiously. Her voice carried an urgent edge. "Please, hand Hazel Ross over to us. This place is too dangerous for her. We have to get her out immediately."

Laura Adams hovered by Perola’s side, fists clenched. "She’s in grave danger. We have no time to explain in detail, but you must let us take her—now."

Luke’s glare hardened. "Absolutely not," he snapped. "Hazel’s safer with us. And I want to know who you really are. You’re not just any random tutors from Arcadia Academy. Are you Fallen Angels?"

He recognized hints of legends he’d stumbled upon in obscure texts—footnotes about beings loyal to a ’Dark King Wendell,’ or perhaps other hidden sovereigns.

4The moment he uttered the name, Perola and Laura Adams stiffened, shock evident in their stares.

"How could you possibly know that?" Laura asked, her voice trembling with surprise. "Only an elite few even know of our existence."

"That’s none of your concern," Luke responded tersely. "But I’d appreciate some clarity on why you want Hazel. If you really intend to protect her, you’d better prove it."

Before either Fallen Angel could respond, Hazel interjected, stepping forward in midair. "Wait. Both of you—explain yourselves properly. If you mean well, then let’s leave together. There’s no need to force me away from Luke and Elias."

Perola’s expression flickered, but she swallowed her initial protest. "Time is short. Our mission is to protect you, Hazel.

This entire region will soon be swarming with demons drawn by the Fort Snail’s awakening. We can’t let them turn you into a catalyst for—well... Let’s just say the stakes are enormous."

Laura Adams gave a curt nod. "And we have no intention of harming you. We only want to remove you from the battlefield. But if you insist on staying near Luke, then at least do so swiftly. We can’t linger."

At that moment, an echoing roar rippled through the air from somewhere below, like an orchestra of howls and screeches blending into a chaotic cacophony. Armies of demons poured relentlessly toward the colossal snail.

Many soared on battered wings or lunged across jagged ground, their glowing eyes fixed on the mountainous creature as if enthralled by a siren call.

Perola and Laura exchanged grim looks. "They’re converging faster than we expected," Perola murmured.

"We have to hold them off. Hazel, stay behind us. Luke, Elias—make sure you stay with Hazel, or get her out of this region altogether. Do whatever it takes to keep her safe."

With that, the two women darted off, slicing through the skies to intercept the stampede. Their black wings beat powerfully, carrying them straight into the heart of the roiling mass of beasts.

Even from a distance, Luke could see that every movement of theirs exuded formidable, super-level magic, amplified by a dark force that was far from typical elemental energies.

Elias let out a low whistle of awe. "They don’t move like ordinary wind mages," he muttered. "All that darkness... it’s on a different scale."

Luke nodded. "We’ll let them delay the horde. If they truly are here to protect Hazel, they’ll do what they must." Turning to Hazel, he asked, "Are you okay? You’ve been quiet."

Hazel pressed her lips together. "I’m feeling that strange resonance again," she admitted. "It’s like something is calling out to me—or to the Fort Snail itself. I can’t quite describe it."

Before they could puzzle over her words, a voice rang out behind them—crisp, mocking, and laced with venom. "Where do you think you’re going, Luke?"

They turned to see a figure floating at eye level: a young woman with purple-tinged skin, as if tainted by swirling toxins. She wore a twisted smile, and a faint green mist curled around her body.
