Chapter 352: Not a Beast

In the principal’s office, the little fox sat in Silvanus’s hands, chin lifted high, looking utterly confident. The principal, meanwhile, nodded thoughtfully as he stared at it for a long moment.

He looked at Silvanus, then back at the fox.

Just a moment ago, this outstanding student had suddenly appeared with a fox in his arms, asking whether it was a beast.

Of course, beasts were a rare resource. They weren’t easily tamed—especially the adult ones—and their numbers were scarce, found only in remote regions where humans seldom ventured.

These days, a few beasts had been domesticated to serve as tools to aid humankind, though even those were few in number.

As for the fox in Silvanus’s hands—

The principal glanced at Silvanus’s expectant expression. Silvanus’s eyes were wide, blinking rapidly as he nodded instinctively.

At last, the principal said, "It’s just an ordinary fox."

Silvanus: "..."

He looked at the principal, then at the fox. The fox, sensing Silvanus’s gaze, turned its head and blinked innocently.

Then, both the boy and the fox turned to look at the principal together—perfectly in sync.

The principal: "..."

"Is it really just a normal fox? But it can understand what I’m saying!" Silvanus couldn’t help but exclaim.

The principal calmly replied, "Some animals have absorbed traces of magic and thus become unusually intelligent. It’s not uncommon, Silvanus."

Silvanus scooped up Vivian, and it immediately burrowed back into his coat, rubbing against him obediently.

Although he was certain Vivian couldn’t possibly be an ordinary fox, since the principal had said so, Silvanus decided not to argue further.

Ordinary was fine too. Now that he had the means to raise a fox, well—so what if it was just a fox!

Silvanus bid farewell to the principal and left the office in high spirits.

The principal watched the door close, his eyes lowering, a faint, unreadable emotion flickering within them.

Obviously, the classmates who were always paying attention to Silvanus’s every move also noticed the new "accessory" on his coat.

In particular, Matthew had been staring at Vivian the entire time.

When the teacher finally finished lecturing, Silvanus tilted his chin up, lifting Vivian’s little face with one hand and smiling. "Cute, isn’t she? Her name’s Vivian."

Matthew licked his lips. "Where’d you get her?"

Silvanus pulled Vivian out a bit and held her toward Matthew. "She ran up to me crying and begged me to take her in," he said, then chuckled. "Kind of like you, actually."

But right at that moment, Vivian suddenly let out a low, feral growl.

Silvanus blinked in surprise—Vivian’s fur was completely puffed up, making her look like a tiny ball.

Her eyes narrowed dangerously at Matthew, a ferocious glint in them. She bared her small but incredibly sharp fangs, growling low, looking as though she might leap forward and tear out Matthew’s throat at any second.

Matthew’s eyes widened; startled, he instinctively took a step back, looking at Silvanus in both fear and confusion.

Silvanus quickly pulled Vivian back, and her posture immediately relaxed, returning to her usual docile self.

"What’s wrong with you, huh?"

Silvanus rubbed her head, then held her out toward Matthew again—sure enough, her fur puffed right back up.

Silvanus glanced between Matthew’s helpless expression and Vivian’s bristling form, then burst out laughing. He kept playfully moving her back and forth until Vivian went stiff, finally opening her mouth to bite Silvanus’s hand lightly.

She clearly bit very gently—so softly it wouldn’t even leave a mark—but Silvanus immediately went limp, eyes closing as he collapsed into his seat, completely "unconscious."

Vivian’s eyes went wide. She panicked, leaping onto Silvanus’s chest, sniffing him all over, pressing her small head anxiously under his chin while making little snuffling noises.

It wasn’t until Silvanus felt the fox’s tongue repeatedly licking his face that he suddenly opened his eyes. "Hey! You filthy thing! Don’t do that!"

He grimaced in disgust. "How could you lick me like that? You were licking your own butt with that same tongue this morning!"

The fox let out a sharp yip but didn’t stop—instead, she gave his hand two more licks, then blinked innocently, tilting her head.

Silvanus froze, expression blank.

From the side, Matthew quickly handed him a handkerchief.

Vivian turned her head and glared at Matthew defensively, her expression full of suspicion. Matthew instinctively raised both hands in surrender, looking as harmless as possible.

At that moment, the strange voice rang in his head again: "This creature is not simple. It can smell me."

Matthew instinctively bowed his head, sounding a little angry. "Don’t speak up when other people are around, especially Silvanus!"

"How so? Afraid Silvanus will find out, ha ha ha."

The voice left only an echoing laugh and then vanished.

Matthew clenched his fists, furious but unsure what to do, his whole body seething with irritation.

"All right, let’s go eat."

Silvanus tossed the handkerchief into the trash and stood up. The fox was draped across his shoulders now like a large scarf.

Matthew secretly thought, eyes darkening, Silvanus really likes that animal.

Matthew had always been possessive since childhood. He would never let anything else come between him and Silvanus because he was afraid Silvanus would stop choosing him as the priority.

So Silvanus had never kept any pet. They would all leave Silvanus, while only Matthew stayed by his side forever.

What Silvanus didn’t know was that the small, adorable lives he rescued didn’t run far away either. They were led down to the river or off cliffs. Matthew always had ways to make sure they ended up in those places.

"I hate this creature. Then kill it. I don’t like it either." That voice echoed again from deep within his soul. At times, Matthew even felt it was more like his own inner voice than something external.

As if reading Matthew’s thoughts, the voice laughed: "Of course. Because we are one."

Matthew’s face turned cold. "No, I’m Matthew." He paused, then muttered, "Besides, that fox won’t leave Silvanus..." Even if he wanted to, there was nothing he could do while the fox stayed so close to Silvanus.

Ariana never expected to see a cute fox next to Silvanus. Her eyes sparkled with delight. Several times, she wanted to go hug it, but the fox seemed really aloof and did not want her to touch it.

Ariana could only give up.

She watched Silvanus holding a chicken drumstick to feed the fox and asked, a bit curious, "Where did you get it? Look at that fur. It must be valuable." 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶

Silvanus said, "Its name is Vivian. It ran to the gate and begged me to keep it."

Ariana: "...that doesn’t sound very believable. Is it male or female?"

Silvanus paused at that. Right, he hadn’t paid attention to whether it was male or female. He defaulted it to female right from the start. But hearing Ariana ask, he felt a little curious too.

"But what’s the point of knowing if it’s male or female?" he asked.

Ariana immediately said, "Of course, to know how to spay or neuter it. If it’s just a normal fox, you should neuter it so it won’t run off."

Ariana had seen her older sisters do that when they kept pets.
