Chapter 444: Marax

The scene of the consort-selection was inside a massive tower. The crowd was still packed shoulder to shoulder, even though Silvanus and his group had arrived quite late.

Inside, uncontrollable shouts and cheers were already ringing out, even more frenzied than an idol fan event.

But perhaps this was just another form of idol chasing, right? Both Silvanus and Nick found themselves thinking the same thing.

Asta, walking at the front, showed not a shred of the gentlemanly demeanor he had when dealing with girls. He kicked one demon aside and shoved another without hesitation. The crowd was too noisy for anyone to notice, or if someone did notice, he would widen his eyes and flash a threatening glare to scare them off.

By sheer coincidence, there were no demons of a higher rank than him along the way. Every last one of them was frightened into tucking their tails and giving way.

Thanks to Asta’s brutally efficient path-clearing, Nick and Silvanus were finally able to squeeze their way inside.

Asta was genuinely unable to contain his anticipation. He had long heard that City Lord Marax possessed extraordinary beauty, and now was his chance to witness it for himself.

Just as they stepped in, the performance seemed to reach a transition at the perfect moment. Countless black-red rose petals suddenly rained down from above, forming a floral downpour that completely blocked their view.

The crowd erupted into noisy chaos.

Asta could not help clicking his tongue inwardly, thinking that a pile of flowers was nothing special to look at.

Yet at that very moment, a cool breeze suddenly swept in, gently brushing across his face. It carried with it a faint, elegant fragrance, light and delicate, yet impossible to ignore.

Asta lifted his head in surprise.

The dense rain of petals had already cleared. Reflected in Asta’s eyes now was a breathtakingly beautiful figure.

Hair as pure and flawless as snow. Skin unlike that of most demons, also pale and milky white. This was clearly not a typical demon aesthetic, yet her face— 𝑓𝘳𝑒𝑒𝓌𝘦𝘣𝘯ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝑚

A pair of enchanting peach-blossom eyes, the corners slightly upturned, as if smiling even when she was not. Silver pupils shimmered with light. A tall, straight nose. Soft crimson lips that were gently curved. Affection seemed to pool within her gaze. Anyone looked at by her like this would likely drown in intoxication.

There was no need even to mention her figure. It was flawless to the extreme, especially now that she wore a dress with intricate yet daring cutouts. Her cleavage and abdomen were fully exposed, revealing a tattoo that ran from the center of her belly up to her chest. Both sides of her waist were bare as well. The skirt was composed of countless pieces of sheer fabric, split high up to the hip bones. Those light layers of cloth rippled continuously in the wind. Her thighs were left uncovered, each bound by a golden ring that cinched tightly around them, causing the soft flesh to bulge slightly.

Asta stared blankly at the scene before him, almost forgetting what day it even was.

This was the first person he had ever met whose chest he did not look at first...

Especially when that girl suddenly raised her hand and reached toward them.

Asta instinctively lifted his own hand, only to see Nick at his side also lunging forward eagerly.

He frowned deeply, his tail slipping free as it lashed straight across Nick’s face. Unable to wait a moment longer, he himself grabbed the girl’s hand.

So soft. Gods above, so this is it... so this is what it feels like to hold someone’s hand? Before this, he had only ever grabbed chests.

But never mind the past. From now on, he would only hold this girl’s hand!

Nick, knocked flat by Asta’s tail, roared in fury. "Asta, you bastard!"

Yet his entire face was still marked red, making him look both ridiculous and pitiful.

The noise seemed to catch Marax’s attention. She looked down at Nick and smiled lightly. Even such a simple smile carried an oddly indulgent tenderness.

Nick froze, his face flushing scarlet as he stammered, unable to form a single word.

Up above, Asta noticed the girl before him being distracted and frowned again.

He domineeringly lifted her chin, forcing her to look only at him. "You already chose me. If you look at others with that kind of gaze again, I’ll get jealous. Only look at me."

The girl tilted her head slightly. "Look how?" Then she suddenly smiled, her eyes curving as light flooded them. "Like this, perhaps?"

Asta instinctively clutched his chest. No, Asta, no. Do not blush. Gods, calm down. Do not show how desperate you are.

But she was too beautiful. Her smile was too gentle. And why did her eyes hook his heart so tightly? Was this love at first sight?!

No matter how hard Asta tried, his face refused to listen, turning red like a fully ripened tomato.

And things only grew worse when the girl released him in midair, then suddenly stepped back. Along with the wind and drifting petals, she began to dance gracefully.

Light poured down from above. Even though countless backup dancers surrounded her, the gaze of Asta and everyone else rested solely on her.

She was like a flower in full bloom, her body swaying with fluid grace, radiating an irresistible charm.

Only then did Asta belatedly realize that this was Marax.

But he could not be bothered to care at all. His heartbeat was far too loud, blasting away every other thought.

Marax had brought him up here, and she was even dancing for him. Did that mean she had already chosen him?

Asta felt that Marax’s former suitors were all utterly inferior and weak. How could they have possibly abandoned such a beautiful woman?

He felt that none of them were worthy of Marax. Fortunately, Marax had now found someone truly deserving. None other than him.

He was certain he could do anything...

As if thinking of something, Asta’s entire face flushed bright red again, like a fully cooked shrimp.

Below, Nick could not help clenching his fists tightly. "He is not seriously going to go into heat right up there, is he?!"

Of course, what he wanted to say even more was that the one up there should have been him, not Asta.

And naturally, his worry that Asta might really lose control up there was not unfounded, because panting sounds had already begun to rise from the surroundings. These demons truly were nothing more than flesh shells wrapped around desire. They had genuinely started relieving themselves on the spot.

The tower had many levels, and there were plenty of people on the upper floors as well. Nick truly did not dare imagine something falling down onto their heads. It was horrifying.

Just then, his sleeve was suddenly tugged lightly.

Nick lowered his head and saw Silvanus looking at him with an emotionless expression. "What’s wrong with you?"

Seeing Silvanus’s small, adorable face, Nick could not help pulling him into a tight hug, sobbing as he cried out, "In this chaotic world, you are truly an angel, Silvanus!"

Silvanus: "..." He really did not want to be anyone’s angel.

He directly pushed Nick’s head aside. After a moment of silence, he finally spoke. "You just weren’t chosen by Marax. Don’t dwell on it. You’ll meet someone better in the future."

Would there really be someone better than Marax?

Nick let out a dry laugh. "Who says I’m feeling regret? I didn’t say I wanted to rip Asta’s head off either."

Silvanus said, "...Then stop grinding your teeth like you’re about to chew them all to pieces."

Nick: "..." Silvanus really did not know how to comfort people.

Of course, Nick was not the only one who felt dissatisfied. Up above, someone suddenly shouted, "Marax, choosing like this goes against the rules! It’s unfair, unfair!"

Once the first person shouted, others quickly followed, voicing their objections one after another.

After all, the previous rules for selecting a consort had been simple. The demons would step forward to display their talents, or slaughter one another directly. Whoever won would be chosen.

This time, Marax had come up and casually picked a single demon like that. Naturally, the other demons, who had no chance to show themselves at all, were extremely dissatisfied.

The shouting grew louder and louder. Asta felt his displeasure rise as well. His eyes stood upright like those of a wild beast. He felt this was the perfect moment to show himself off in front of Marax.

But just at that moment, countless arrows suddenly shot out. Their speed was so fast it was like a blink of an eye, piercing straight through the demons who were shouting in protest.

Those demons were nailed to the ground and rapidly began to rot.

The crowd froze for a brief instant. Just as Nick thought chaos was about to erupt, those demons instead grew even more excited, shouting even louder as they continued to profess their love for Marax.
