Chapter 288: Chaos

’Oh, he noticed them too.’ Alex praised inwardly after seeing the direction that Eric had gone after blending with the shadow of the forest.

The kid had moved towards the closest beast that had been stalking them since they entered the forest, the beast was approximately ten meters to their left and was hiding behind a huge tree root.

If one looked closely, one would notice the anomalous dark patch on the ground that moved like a log floating on a stream. That dark patch was Eric who was currently dashing toward the magic beasts.

In this form, his footsteps wouldn’t be heard and his movements wouldn’t generate any wind. Eric quickly appeared behind the beast that was patiently observing Alex since the second human had suddenly vanished. It knew that other beasts were also around and was waiting for the right time to strike.

Unknown to the beast was that a dark mass of shadow had risen from the ground behind it and formed into the person of Eric.

With his hands clutching his shadowy daggers, Eric swung at the neck of the beast from behind.

Shin!

A soft sound of blade slicing through flesh was heard as the head of the beast fell off its neck and blood gushed out from the wound. Even in death, the creature didn’t know how it had died.

This small event didn’t instantly alert the other beasts, as there had been no strong commotion; they continued to monitor Alex, who just stood still like a statue and enjoyed the show.

Eric moved again, he sank into the ground and moved toward the next beast.

Not long after that, the remaining beasts caught the scent of something in the air.

It was blood!

The stench of the blood from the beast that Eric had killed spread quickly but even then, the patient beasts refused to move as they couldn’t see the source of it.

They assumed it might be one of their target’s tricks.

Alex couldn’t help but smirk when he noticed this. This was the downside of low-ranked beasts; any other high-ranked beast would have instantly retreated after picking up the stench of blood, especially since they couldn’t see where it had come from.

A few seconds later, Eric had reached another magic beast.

It was a beast that resembled a monkey with abnormally long pointed teeth poking out of its mouth; the creature had a thick coat of brown fur covering its body that allowed it to blend well with the environment.

It was currently sitting on a tall branch with its body hugging the tree. Honestly, one could easily miss it even if they looked right at it for a moment.

Eric ran along the body of the tree and ascended to the branch where the beast was sitting. Not a sound was heard, thanks to the state he was in.

He arrived on the branch beside the beast and then rose from the shadows.

Unlike the previous beast, the sense of this monkey was sharper and since Eric had appeared beside it and not behind it, the beast had noticed him almost immediately.

Taken by surprise, the beast opened its mouth and was about to let out a sound and charge at Eric at the same time but Eric’s daggers were faster.

Shink!

One of the daggers pierced through the beast’s neck before it could make any sound, causing it to choke on its own blood, while the other dagger sliced through its head, sending the top part of the creature’s head as well as some brain matter flying.

’That was close,’ Eric thought as he slowly dropped the body of the beast on the branch.

But before he could move.

Thud!

A dull sound rang through the silent forest as something dropped to the ground; the sound instantly attracted the attention of everything within five hundred meters.

Eric looked down at the source of the sound and almost cursed, his lips curving into a helpless smile.

It was the upper part of the monkey’s head which he had cut off; he forgot to catch it, and it had fallen to the ground.

The next moment, Eric felt dozens of eyes land on him.

He had been discovered!

Then, hell broke loose. The entire forest that had been dead silent since they entered was instantly filled with roars and sounds of magic beasts rushing around. Some of the beasts charged toward Eric on top of the tree, while the rest went for Alex, who was still standing in front of the tall vines.

Eric immediately retreated into the darkness of the forest, moving around in the dark patch of the ground.

Losing their target, the beasts began to run around the place in search of Eric.

Meanwhile, Eric was rushing back to Alex’s side because he knew that some of the beasts would also target him. Although he knew that Alex was strong, the space element didn’t have the required spells to survive this kind of situation.

But before he could reach Alex, the latter’s voice sounded.

"Don’t worry about me, just kill as many as you can!" Alex called out when he noticed Eric rushing back, he had a calm look on his face as he saw the several beasts that were pouncing toward him.

Eric hesitated for a moment but still decided to trust Alex in the end. He turned around and rose from the shadows before dashing toward the pack of beasts, his daggers swinging rapidly in the air.

Shin!!!

His dagger pierced the side of a beast, Eric quickly moved his body to avoid the Sharp claws of another beast before swinging his second dagger, cleanly cutting off the creature’s paw.

Without wasting time, he threw one of his daggers out, the dagger flew with great speed and pierced three beasts in a row before impaling the fourth one to a nearby tree.

Eric then jumped into the air, escaping three toad-like beasts that had pounced at him. He rose several meters in the air and not waiting to land, dark stars formed around him.

Eric quickly formed two star patterns before he started descending and called out the name of the spell.

"Shadow shift!"

The next moment after he called out the spell, he disappeared and appeared next to his dagger that was still impaling a beast to the tree.

The beasts were slightly confused at his disappearance but quickly found him after he reappeared and charged at him again. Seeing this, Eric proceeded to grab his dagger and slash upwards, finally killing the beast that was stuck to the tree before preparing for the incoming ones.

His eyes darted to the side for a moment, and he wondered how Alex was doing because he hadn’t felt any spell of the space element since the chaos started.

Meanwhile, on Alex’s side.

Several magic beasts lunged at Alex at the same time, their ugly maws opened and revealed sharp teeth that threatened to shred him to pieces.

But Alex didn’t panic even at the sight of this. He calmly stretched out his left hand at the mouth of one of the incoming creatures, his fist entering its maw as the creature bit down hard.

Chomp!

Crack!

Cracking sounds rang out as the teeth of the beast shattered after it tried to bite off Alex’s fist. Alex’s arm, on the other hand, was unscatched.

A painful whimper escaped from the mouth of the beast after almost all its teeth were destroyed but Alex wasn’t just going to let it cry as he flung it toward the next beast.

Bam!

The two beasts flew out and crashed into a nearby vine and as if reacting to an attack, the vine rose and slammed into the two beasts, further turning them into meat paste.

Alex "...."

The vines can do that?!
