Chapter 289: Using vines to kill beasts

Alex was shocked by this discovery, so the vines would react when faced with any form of attack!

A wicked grin formed on Alex’s face after realising this, his body blurred as he moved to the side and dodged some beasts that had lunged at him. The beasts landed on the ground and pounced at him again, but Alex was extremely quick, and all they could catch were his afterimages.

After invading a few of the beasts, Alex moved toward the network of vines that were originally blocking their path ahead. His right hand bent backwards as his fingers balled into a fist. The next moment, he threw the punch forward.

Bam!

Alex’s fist slammed into one of the thick vines. He made sure to control his strength just enough not to shatter the vines, but the force was still enough to send visible ripples all over them.

The ground trembled as the vines began to wriggle like worms that tasted salt. The entire wall of vines collapsed the next second and tens of thick vines shot out like snakes in search of what had attacked them.

Swoosh!

The sounds of the vines whipping through the air filled the surrounding area for a moment as they attacked everything in their vicinity. Alex smiled brightly upon seeing this; it was the exact outcome he had wanted when he sent that punch!

A vine swept in his direction, and Alex easily dodged it. His figure flashed around at extreme speed as he effortlessly dodged all of the vines.

But the same could not be said for the creatures that were previously trying to devour Alex.

A large vine slammed down and directly landed on the waist of a fox beast.

Bang!

The beast was slammed hard into the ground with half of its body instantly exploding into a bloody mess, it didn’t even get the chance to scream before it died.

Another beast was slammed into a tree, its entire bones shattering due to the impact, and it was left on the brink of death.

Several other beasts experienced the same fate as the vines went on a rampage, and some even had their bodies pierced by the vines.

Alex didn’t retreat to a safe distance; he continued to move at high speed within the chaos as he watched the beasts being killed by the vines. He would immediately kick back any of the creatures that tried to escape.

The magic beasts had long realised the amount of danger they were in, and some had tried to run away. Alex’s job was to prevent that from happening.

His eyes darted to the corner, and he noticed a beast that resembled a beaver with small bat wings on its back. The creature displayed high agility and was able to keep up with the speed of the vines, it was actually running along a vine while dodging attacks from others.

If left alone, it would surely reach the top of the vines and escape!

"Not on my watch," Alex grinned as his eyes turned silver white and stars of the space element instantly appeared around him and formed a star pattern.

’Telekinesis,’

Alex thought of the spell and stretched his left hand towards the large beaver that just happened to jump into the air at this moment.

The body of the beast suddenly froze in mid-air just when it was about to escape. The beast thrashed about as it tried to break free from whatever had held it in the air but the next moment, its vision blurred as it was launched through the air and landed on the ground in the midst of the vines.

The beaver was spooked but before it could react, a vine fell down on its head.

Bang!

Blood splashed on the ground as the head of the beaver exploded under the weight of the vine.

’Much better,’ Alex thought and continued to observe the other beasts, making sure that none escaped.

After several minutes, all of the beasts were finally killed by the combined efforts of Alex and the vines. But the vines didn’t stop attacking, they continued to thrash around.

’Seems like the punch was too hard for them to forgive easily,’ Alex thought as he kept dodging the attacks of the vines.

From the way the vines were moving, it was obvious that they couldn’t see him and even if they could sense him somehow, they were just too slow to pose a threat to him.

So Alex decided to use them to keep himself company for the time being while he waited for Eric to return.

Not too far away from Alex’s position, Eric had almost finished killing all of the magic beasts that went after him as well.

Thanks to the shadow in the ironwood forest strengthening his element, these common rank beasts were not much trouble to him.

So after minutes of picking them off one after the other, Eric finally killed the last one.

He stood straight as he stared at the corpse of the last beast that he killed; his breathing was still very stable, and he didn’t even break a sweat.

He turned his gaze and looked in the direction where Alex was supposed to be facing the other beasts. He could hear loud sounds, and the ground was trembling slightly.

Eric raised an eyebrow. He wasn’t worried about Alex; he was just confused.

Why was it so noisy over there? What exactly was Alex doing?

Since he was done here, Eric decided to make his way back to Alex’s location. His daggers were still in his hands, and he was ready to dive in if there were still magic beasts left. He might be able to ask Alex for a favour later if he helped out.

Still on his way back, the loud sounds suddenly stopped, as well as the slight trembling of the ground. Eric’s confusion grew and he increased his speed.

He arrived at Alex’s location after a few seconds, and what he saw made him freeze for a moment. He didn’t know when, but he found himself staring with his mouth wide open.

Eric was obviously in shock at the sight of the devastation he came to meet.

Blood, bits of beasts’ corpses, and the ground that had obviously been reshaped somehow.

"W-what happened here?!" Eric finally managed to ask after a while, his eyes staring at Alex, who was calmly standing in the centre of this chaos.

His clothes didn’t have any ruffles like someone who had been in a fight, and he looked so calm.

"Eric, you’re back. Do you want to keep these corpses? You can sell them to the Union for some cash." Alex said as he walked toward the kid.

Eric "...."

He was more concerned about what happened here than whatever happens to the corpses of the magic beasts.

"What happened here? How did you do all of this?" Eric asked again after slightly recovering from the shock, his eyes shining with interest.

Alex calmly pointed ahead. Eric followed Alex’s fingers, and his eyes landed on a bunch of vines in front of them. The vines were currently scattered across the ground and didn’t look suspicious to Eric.

"Wait, weren’t those vines blocking this place?" Eric asked after realising that the path ahead was now open.

"Hmm, the vines can move and attack when they feel threatened," Alex explained briefly. Eric’s eyes immediately lit up with a look of realisation so Alex didn’t need to explain more.

"So all the commotion was their doing, good thing that they only attacked the beasts," Eric stated as he allowed the daggers to disappear.

Alex was about to ask if they should store the corpses but suddenly paused and turned to look to the side. His eyes landed on a pair of large brown eyes that were staring at them from behind the shadow of a huge tree.

Alex didn’t hesitate as stars immediately appeared around him and quickly formed two star patterns.

"Space wall!" Alex shouted as he jumped forward and landed in front of Eric with both hands stretched out.

At the same time, an extremely fast silhouette lunged from behind the tree and shot at Eric, who was the closest, before Alex moved in front of him.

Bang!

A deafening sound rang out as something powerful crashed into Alex’s space wall, sending ripples along the surface of the invisible wall.

Eric "...."

Eric was shocked as he found himself looking around like a lost sheep. Everything had happened so fast that he didn’t understand what was going on, even after Alex blocked something that would have most likely injured him badly if he were alone.

Even as a shadow mage, he wasn’t able to sense their presence!

"Focus, it’s our main target!" Alex called out when he saw Eric’s lost expression.

Eric finally recovered, thanks to Alex’s shout, and looked at the silhouette that had crashed into the space wall. 𝒻𝓇𝑒𝘦𝘸𝑒𝒷𝓃ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝒸ℴ𝘮

A gigantic snake that was almost as thick as the surrounding tree and had a head that was the size of a car was currently staring down at them from a distance. It had pitch-black scales that made it almost invisible in the darkness of the forest, and a single metal horn poking out from the centre of its head.

It was a steel-horned snake!
