Betrayed By The Hero, Loved By The Lord-Chapter 271: Playing matchmaker (3)
Chapter 271: Playing matchmaker (3)
"No, you are not bad at it. I am surprised a man of your status would want to use his time to speak with a maid. I am Selene’s maid, as you said. Nothing more," said Agnes.
"I am well aware of who you are. What status are you referring to? I don’t hold a status like Xavier. If I do, I wasn’t told it was passed on to me. Where is my land?" Isaac joked.
"Not that kind of status. You worked in the court. I don’t think I have ever heard of men from the court going around chasing ladies who work as maids. If this is some joke to annoy Lord Blackthorn, it won’t work," Agnes said, viewing it as nothing.
"The reason I want to ask for a moment of your time is so you can get to know me. I have never tried to annoy Xavier. Truthfully, all I want is to avoid him, but I find myself here over and over again. This isn’t some joke. I have an interest in you," Isaac cleared up.
"And about the men from the court being with maids," Isaac continued. "You’d be surprised by who they spend their time with. They will deny most of it to not be embarrassed, but I have seen it myself."
"I see," Agnes replied, thinking over the offer.
"You can say no, and we can forget this moment ever happened. I don’t want to pressure you into doing something you don’t like. I can leave you be right now," Isaac said, staying back instead of continuing to follow Agnes.
"I am flattered by this. It has been some time since anyone spoke of wanting to court me. I had not considered how much had changed for me to receive an offer," Agnes said.
With everyone avoiding Selene in the past, naturally, Agnes wasn’t approached by anyone unless she would leave Selene’s side. Agnes had become used to it and devoted her time to Selene.
"I am also a mixed-blood," Agnes mentioned.
"And I am a pureblood. Not one from a well-known family, which I hope you do not mind. What next must you point out?" Isaac asked,
"Nothing. I have a day off from work in two days, but with all the attacks, Selene suggested I stay near the estate. It would be best if we leave during the day," Agnes suggested.
Agnes grew nervous now that it dawned on her that she would be spending a day with a man. It had been so long that she had forgotten what needed to be done or said. freēwēbnovel.com
"Moving around the day is best," Isaac agreed. "I will arrive at noon and have you back before nightfall, so you don’t worry about the dangers."
"Thank you. Wait, do you need a drink, or was that a plot to speak to me? I would love to avoid taking a guest to the kitchen for the head maid to see," Agnes said, smiling to sway him to return to his seat. "I can get you wine. Also wine for Francesca."
"Some blood would be better for me. The wine should be brought for Francesca. I can find my way back from here," Isaac said, seeing Agnes off.
He waited around as she headed to the kitchen and then returned to where Francesca sat.
"You are back so soon. Did it not go well?" Francesca asked, disappointed.
"It went well. You are good," Isaac complimented Francesca.
"Thank you," Francesca clapped for herself. "I am thinking of opening a matchmaking business since I am so good. It was obvious by your stare, yet she didn’t notice it. Both of you seem in need of a little distraction."
"I am terrified of what you have in mind. Other than trying to clean up the mess the king ignores, I spend my time at home painting, so some company would be wonderful. Unfortunately, the town is no longer safe for us to walk around in at any hour," said Isaac.
"It is why Henry is coming to get me. We cannot take the chance now. Are you staying for dinner as well? You could have a ride with us if it is on the way. You are not the only one losing friends for going against that king," Francesca shared.
"Henry is on the king’s list of people he hates all because I never shared a bed with Darius. Henry could use a friend who has something in common with him, but don’t tell him that I said this. Do this, and I have wonderful gifts for Agnes. Deal?" Francesca asked, holding out her hand for Isaac to shake.
Isaac didn’t know what gifts Francesca could have in mind, but he still shook her hand. He needed a friend like Henry since Darius had most of the court on his side.
"Wonderful. If Xavier joins this little friend group-"
"Oh no," Isaac replied, denying the offer. "Xavier and I are not friends. He may just be your husband’s friend."
Francesca did not understand the pair. "You are sitting comfortably in his home. The very home that the majority of the town has not seen the inside of, and from what I have heard, some of the Blackthorns have not seen it either. You look like a friend to me."
"We are not friends. We are working together to stop the attacks, and then you will not see me here again."
"I doubt it," Francesca replied. "I hope there will not come a day when you regret not claiming him as your friend sooner. Many are dying around the town."
"Xavier Blackthorn will not die. I have been hoping he would vanish for years, yet he continued to pop up all around my home. He’ll survive this and whatever the town will face in the future," Isaac said, certain of it.
"I hope that is true so Selene wouldn’t need to mourn the loss of her husband. Maybe the one who dies might be you, and in those final moments, you realise Xavier was the only one who didn’t care if you were in the court or not. Maybe," Francesca smiled.
"You’ve somehow managed to rid me of all the happiness I felt. Can we please focus on your help regarding Agnes as we await the couple who have forgotten us?" Isaac asked.
Isaac’s shirt started to feel tight as he thought of how he wasn’t as fortunate as Xavier to escape death.
"Of course. I have a good place in mind for you to take her," Francesca said, moving on for now.
