Chapter 79: S Rank Adventurers Party Are On The Way!

The warmth of Maddy’s cavern, filled with the scent of roasted meat and the rowdy laughter of a newborn family, felt worlds away from the dusty road leading out of the Slime Village.

The five adventurers tramped along the dirt path, the sun catching the polished edges of their brand new, expensive gear. Not Erwin, his golden armor was dented and worn, his claymore showing the scars of countless battles.

They had spent three days in the village, three days emptying their coin pouches on high-grade potions... and one painfully expensive stone.

Lita held the object between her fingers like it had personally insulted her.

"Why the hell is this rock so expensive!? I could buy a whole plot of land with what we spent on this! And now... we have no savings. I’m not eating slime jam again just because we can’t afford a steak! NO and NEVER!"

Erwin glanced at her from the front of the group, already sighing.

"You’re still angry about that price? I’ve explained it to you at least a hundred times. That’s not just a stone. It’s a Teleportation Stone."

He tapped the small crystal with one finger.

"That thing can save an adventurer’s life."

Lita frowned harder, still unconvinced.

"But we’re still alive, aren’t we? And we made it this far without ever buying one of these!"

Erwin slowed his pace, turning slightly toward her.

"That’s because all our missions so far were in the plains. Not inside a dungeon."

He gestured ahead toward the distant mountains.

"Our party is still new, Lita. We’ve only been together three months. Until now, our focus was ranking up and building experience."

His tone grew more serious.

"But this one..."

He adjusted the strap of his sword.

"This will be our first real mission... Inside a dungeon."

"Hmp! With my explosions, we wouldn’t even need to retreat or teleport back to safety. You’re rich, Erwin, so I guess those coins don’t matter to you anyway."

Gela waved a hand lazily, cutting in.

"Ugh, Captain... this girl won’t stop, even if you explain it in the simplest way. I swear, her brain is already fried."

Lita spun around, face crimson, fists clenching.

"WHAT DID YOU JUST CALL ME, HYPOCRITE?!"

The two were now trading barbs, their journey barely begun and already sparks were flying.

Ed shuffled to the front, still shy as ever, carefully approaching Erwin. His mind, however, wasn’t on the argument, he was calculating.

"If we can just snag two or three high grade mana minerals from the depths of the Shellgrave cave... we could recoup what we spent on the teleportation stone... and maybe even afford a proper celebratory meal once the mission’s done."

Finally, Ed mustered the courage to speak.

"Uhm... Captain... y-you know everything about this place, don’t you? The monsters, the dungeons, even the resources we can loot—you know it all."

Erwin snapped out of his own thoughts.

"Oh, Ed. Yeah... that’s part of being a captain. I have to cover every angle. We’re not just taking a job, we’re risking our lives out here."

Ed swallowed, his voice trembling slightly.

"Then... is it true? The legend of Shellgrave? That this entire mountain range... is a dead body? Did you know that too?"

Erwin’s gaze darkened, drifting toward the blackened cliffs that marked the edge of the forbidden zone.

"Yeah... a Turtle Dragon from the Age of War. It crawled ashore to take its final breath, its massive shell forming the ridge that separates our kingdom from the Forbidden Ocean. Its meat turned to stone, its blood to poison... and its marrow? That’s where the real trouble begins."

He continued, his tone grave.

"The mana there is corrupted... The land won’t let you rest. Rumor says the Dragon’s essence amplifies every monster. Even a small monsters there is an C Rank threat. Most of them are Undead, born either from the corrupted land or, worse, from the fallen adventurers who tried to explore it. The Dragon uses our own against us."

Ed swallowed hard, her explosive pride flickering.

"And the bosses?"

Erwin confirmed.

"But those aren’t the real nightmares. The Guild Master warned us about the Alphas—creatures born when their species has been hunted and oppressed for a long time. When you see one, you don’t ’engage.’ You run for your life."

Zaun’s fingers clenched his knife; just the word Alpha made his blood run cold. Ed’s knees trembled as she whispered,

"Run? Why?"

"Because they’re A to High Rank. Their Might and Magic are estimated at over a million. To them, an S Rank adventurer like me or Zaun—isn’t a rival. We’re just an appetizer."

The group fell into a heavy, tense silence. Even the two girls stopped their bickering. Each of them was an A Rank veteran, and Zaun had just recently reached S Rank but hearing that there were threats ten times stronger than their captain made this "investigation" feel like a death sentence.

Erwin’s gaze swept over the team,

"That’s why this is an S-Rank mission. Our priority isn’t just reaching the quest mark—it’s making it there and coming back alive. With these mana distortions affecting the area, that alone is a massive challenge. The zone is swarming with aggressive monsters, and the Alpha spawn rates are accelerated. Even minor encounters can turn into lethal threats instantly."

He let his gaze sweep across the team, each word deliberate.

"As much as possible, we avoid combat. Our goal is simple: scout the area, assess what lies in the depths, and get out alive. And remember—if we encounter anything that pushes beyond our limits... we retreat. No heroics. No prideful stands. No exceptions."

Little did they know, the "High Rank Alpha" they dreaded so much was currently being referred to as a "Big Dinosaur" by a certain woman, one who had already turned that very Alpha into three full, monstrous meals.

Erwin cleared his throat, delivering his final words before they entered Shellgrave.

"We stick together, understood? And this time, no quarrels. This is our first real mission as a group. I’ve been preparing you for a long time, even spending extra effort on side tasks. Call it my perfectionism, but every detail was meant to make sure you survive in a world crawling with monsters."

Ed, still captivated by Erwin’s presence, whispered under her breath,

"Ah... to be guided by a son of the Golden Knight..."
