Chapter 10: Winning Five Million Dollars

Chapter 10

The chibi grabbed his collar and shook it frantically.

[Are you stupid! Don’t do it]

Alex didn’t answer her. He knew she was right and probably acting in his best interest. Because honestly, taking money from a shady man like Victor seemed dangerous, but Victor’s offer looked too tempting, plus with profit instinct guiding him, there was no way he could fail and end up in debt.

After carefully calculating the pros and cons, Alex turned back to the sly loan shark and gave a small nod, agreeing to his terms.

Victor’s grin widened in satisfaction at Alex’s agreement. Alex couldn’t tell whether the man was pleased by his courage or amused by his foolishness, but either way the decision had already been made.

"Hehe... Good, I like decisive people." He said, and gestured to the person behind him.

Minutes later a huge stack of chips worth around fifty thousand dollars in total sat in front of Alex.

Watching the huge pile of chips, the chibi finally gave up and slumped her shoulders back and tiredly sighed.

[At least, I know I tried]

The dealer announced for everyone to place their bets for the next game. Deciding to play it safe, Alex separated twenty five thousand dollars worth of chips from the huge pile and pushed them forward.

He knew that blindly putting all of his chips to bet was not a smart idea, even though it might seem faster, but what if the profit instinct decided to fail at that moment. He just couldn’t take that risk.

The dealer, after confirming that everyone had placed their bets, pressed the button, making the dice rattle against the dome before slowly stopping. The dealer leaned forward, squinting his eyes, he announced.

"It is two and five. That’s a total of seven."

Alex beamed with joy internally but kept a straight face outside, as the dealer pushed a huge pile of chips towards him, making his pile bigger.

’Good, my twenty five thousand dollars just increased, now all I just need to do is to keep this up and win more cash.’

The next round began. As Alex watched the dealer announce for everyone to once again place their bets, the familiar instinct came again, this time pointing him to choose the number five.

Filled with confidence from his winning streak, Alex decided to bet all his chips this time, and watched confidently as the dice knocked into each other with a clack! Clack! Clack! Sound before finally settling.

The dealer’s hoarse voice rang out.

"It is a three and two. In total it’s a five."

Then more chips were pushed into Alex’s side. In less than an hour since coming to this casino, he had made over one hundred and fifty thousand dollars. What was the use of one million when he could earn maybe five million or even ten million.

Alex didn’t notice that his thoughts had now changed from his earlier goal, now greed had begun to creep in. The next game started and again he won it effortlessly.

Soon, whispers began to spread as everyone began to notice this undefeated gambling king who hadn’t lost a single match since he came in.

"Is he cheating or something?"

"It is dice, idiot! How can they cheat with dice, especially the one inside the plastic dome, those ones are hard to cheat."

"Then wasn’t this guy losing? Last time I checked he had over four hundred thousand dollars worth of chips, now it should be more than that."

"I guess he must be some kind of a gambling god."

But Alex wasn’t paying them any attention, instead his mind was busy thinking about how much his next win was going to increase. He now had six hundred thousand dollars, just a few more games and it will turn to millions.

As expected, immediately the next round started, the familiar instinct came again but this time his head hurt, it felt excruciatingly painful, it was like someone was using multiple needles to stab his brain repeatedly.

In pain, Alex groaned while rubbing his head and turned to the sulking chibi on his shoulder who had refused to say a word, after he ignored her advice.

"Shit! System, why does my head hurt so badly?"

But the chibi crossed her tiny arms and turned her face away.

[Oh, now you remember I exist?]

Alex winced as another spike of pain shot through his skull, causing his fingers to tighten against the table edge.

"Stop playing around. What the hell is happening?"

She glanced at him from the corner of her eye, still annoyed but she decided to pity him.

[You were overusing the skill, idiot]

[Don’t you know that Profit instinct isn’t free. Every time you overuse the skill, it causes severe mental strain]

Another wave of pain hit him, and for a minute Alex contemplated stopping, after all seven hundred thousand dollars was a big amount of money. But he hardened his mind.

No! It wasn’t enough yet, he wanted something that he could use to establish his own company. Pushing through the pain, Alex pushed all his chips and gambled like a mad man.

The next round came and this time most of the crowds began to follow Alex lead, betting on any number he chose. This caused almost everyone to win, making the casino lose money.

Immediately a short middle aged man with broad shoulders and an ugly face, dressed in a black suit stepped behind the dealer. His name tag read manager.

The manager folded his hands and watched the next rounds in silence.

Oblivious to the situation he was in, Alex punched the air in joy. His money had finally increased to three million dollars.

The chibi, noticing the manager, immediately interrupted his joy.

[Uhh Alex I think you’re in trouble, the casino manager is now watching you]

Alex quickly took a glance and spotted the manager whispering to the dealer while handing him something. The dealer nodded his head and replaced the dice under the dome with the new one.

This was it, two futures flashed in his mind. one where he walked away now with the three million dollars as a safe man and the other where he continued and earned something bigger but with some risk.

After thinking for a while, Alex chose the latter, convincing himself that after one more round, he will leave.

The chibi, reading his thoughts, finally grew extremely disappointed with him.

[You are lying to yourself. Continue this and you are going to get yourself killed]

"Shut it, I know what I’m doing, okay!" He muttered under his breath then pushed half of his chips forward.

Someone cursed behind him. "Damnit, he is still going!"

The dice rolled as they hit the dome hard then slowly stopped.

The dealers voice rang out,

"Six and six, in total it’s a twelve"

The table erupted in shouts of surprise and disbelief as Alex won yet again for the nigh time. His stacks had now passed four million dollars. But Alex still kept on going, consumed only by the need to win like a chronic gambler.

Victor, noticing that the manager’s ugly expression stepped closer to Alex. "You’re really something kid, but quick word of advice, you better know when to sto..."

"No need, I know when to stop thank you" Alex quickly replied, cutting him off.

Alex slowly pushed his last stack forward, and the whole room instantly went silent. Even the dealer hesitantly looked towards the manager who gave him a quick nod.

The dice rolled. Clack! Clack! Clack! Then slowly stopped.

"Three and another three. In total it’s a six."

The table exploded in chaos. Alex stared in disbelief and his knees nearly gave out. He had finally done it, five million dollars, five million fucking dollars.

Regaining composure he turned towards the dealer.

"I am done, I want to cash my money out."

But the manager slowly gave a cold smile and said.
