Chapter 3:

Before he could even enjoy the thought, his phone suddenly rang, making him freeze.

The screen lit up with the caller ID—Zack.

Alex smirk slowly deepened as he stared at the name for a second.

"...Well, isn’t that a coincidence. And I was just thinking about his mom." he muttered, before answering the call.

"Yo, Alex!" Zack’s cheerful voice burst through the phone. "Where you at, man? Haven’t seen you in forever."

"What do you want, Zack?"

"Wow, no hello?" Zack laughed, "Relax, man. I was just thinking about you. Figured I’d check in."

Alex leaned against the wall. "Just spill it. I know you want to ask for something."

"Ouch, that’s painful man," Zack said playfully. "Alright, fine. I do have a tiny problem."

"Of course you do. So what is it?"

"My mom tightened my allowance again," Zack said, sounding more amused than annoyed. You know how she is. We’re pretty loaded, but she’s weirdly strict about money. Says it ’builds character.’ " He snorted.

"I’m pretty sure it’s just her way of torturing me."

"And this is my problem because...?" Alex asked, his brow slightly furrowed. 𝑓𝓇𝘦ℯ𝘸𝘦𝑏𝓃𝑜𝘷ℯ𝑙.𝑐𝑜𝓂

Zack laughed.

"Because you’re my best friend, obviously. And because you’re always reliable. I’m just a bit short on cash right now. Thought maybe you could spot me some cash. I’ll pay you back, I swear."

Alex’s eyes narrowed slightly. "How much is that?"

"well... it’s nothing crazy, just enough to get me through this week."

There was a brief pause, then Zack added, "By the way, why don’t you come over? We haven’t hung out in forever. And Mom’s at home, so don’t worry—it’s not like I’m throwing some wild party. We can just chill, talk and catch up. Like old times."

Like old times.

Alex’s lips curved into a faint, unreadable smile.

"You’re really set on me coming over, huh?"

"Is that a crime?" Zack said with a chuckle. "Come on man. You owe me at least that much. And besides it’s easier to talk in person, yeah?"

Alex glanced at the floating timer in the corner of his vision, still counting down.

"you know what? I’ll be on my way." he said.

Zack’s voice brightened instantly. "Thanks bro. I knew you wouldn’t say no."

The call ended.

Alex lowered the phone slowly, his expression calm, but his eyes were extremely cold.

"Zack... I trusted you like a brother, but you slept with Emily and took everything from me."

His lips curved into a thin smile.

"Well then, in this life I’ll return the favor. Starting with your mom"

After saying that, he turned and headed straight for the bathroom, took a quick cold shower. After drying himself off, he pulled on a slightly faded pair of baggy jeans and topped it off with a black T-shirt.

The chibi, who had stayed quiet throughout the entire call, floated around him, shaking her head in disapproval, then she shrugged helplessly.

[I guess these clothes will do]

"..."

Ignoring the her remark, he turned to look at the chibi and asked in a questioning tone.

"...You sure this thing works?"

The chibi floated upside down in front of his face with both hands behind her head, looking relaxed.

[Of course it works. But whether you mess it up is a different story]

"Tch."

He grabbed his phone and wallet from the table and slipped them into his pockets. Then took one last glance around the room, exhaled slowly and walked to the door.

He twisted the knob and pulled the door open, causing the cool afternoon breeze to rush in. Then he stepped forward without hesitation and closed the door behind him.

The taxi drove off as Alex stood in front of Zack’s house for the first time since his rebirth.

The streets looked exactly the same as it had in his previous life. It was still the same white fence with neatly trimmed lawn and the same white Mercedes Benz that sat quietly in the driveway. Nothing had changed. That was the funny thing about life. Sometimes it was your life that got broken... Not the world around it.

Alex stared at the fence a second longer than necessary, as memories flashed through his mind; Zack laughing as they drank beers in late nights, promises they never meant but still said anyways.

He tore his sight away from the fence, took a deep breath, and rang the doorbell. The door opened, and a beautiful woman stood there. She was Olivia Carter, Zack’s mom.

For a moment neither of them spoke.

His gaze slowly drifted over her. She looked exactly like how he remembered...

With same soft brown hair that gathered into a loose bun, highlighting her beautiful smooth collarbone. The same siren like eyes that pretended everything was fine. Same sexy curves wrapped in a silk blouse that highlighted her large ample breasts, and a black pencil skirt that hugged her hips, highlighting her nice bubble butt. She exuded that seductive mature woman’s aura.

Olivia blinked when she saw him and said in a warm voice.

"Wow, Alex. you’ve grown even taller than the last time I saw you. Well don’t just stand there, come in."

Alex rubbed the back of his head with a sheepish smile as he walked in. Even though he was mentally around the same age as her, he still felt a bit awkward about being complemented like a kid.

Zack’s voice suddenly came from upstairs.

"Alex!"

Zack jogged down the stairs and slapped him on the shoulder with a wide grin on his face.

"Bro, you really made it. Come on, let’s go over to my room and talk."

Then he practically dragged Alex to his room, flopped onto his bed and stretched his arms behind his head with a grin.

"Man, it’s been way too long since we last hung out like this. Feels kinda nostalgic, huh?"

Alex didn’t answer right away. His eyes slowly swept across the room, taking everything in. Nothing had really changed much. It was still the same posters of different basketball stars and half-nude models that covered the walls, and of course the always familiar messy clothes that were either on the chair or floor, sometimes even hanging off the edge of the desk like they had given up trying to stay organized.

He walked over and sat on the chair near the desk.

"Alright," Alex said calmly while crossing his arm. "You dragged me all the way here. So how much do you need?"

Zack scratched his head and laughed.

"Straight to business, huh? You really haven’t changed."

As Zack opened his mouth to continue, his phone immediately rang, cutting him off. He glanced at it, and swore under his breath before picking it.

"Yeah coach? ...Now?! But it’s a Saturday. Yeah, yeah I’m coming."

He hung up, threw his phone to the bed and groaned.

"Ugh... I swear coach is losing it. He just called saying he needs us to come practice, because of the tournament on Friday."

Alex raised an eyebrow,

"So you’re leaving?"

"Yeah. Like right now." Zack responded while pulling his basketball jersey over his head.

...After he finished changing, he grabbed his bag, but then paused at the door when he remembered that Alex was still there.

"Uh... You can wait here if you want. Mom’s downstairs cooking tuna casserole. I’ll probably be back late."

’Perfect, seems the heaven is finally smiling at me’ Alex said internally. Then he looked up at Zack and nodded.

"Alright bro, bye" Zack said hurriedly, then opened the door, ran downstairs and yelled something to his mom before the sound of the front door being closed, rang out.

Silence fell through the house.

Alex bored of sitting down, stood up and headed downstairs. He stopped, when he noticed Olivia chopping onions at the kitchen counter, while humming a catchy song.

The system panel suddenly slid into his mind.
