The second hearing was scheduled the following week, and this time, a number of witnesses were summoned to give their testimony regarding the mass kidnapping that happened that year. The atmosphere grew even more heated when an unexpected person showed up, declaring,
"I am Ye Hu, a mutated Alpha." The young man stood in the witness box, his eyes solemn and determined. "I am the sole culprit of the Wunan Road Massacre. That year, I manifested in the middle of the street, killing nine people and injuring many more. It was XIU who took me away and protected me, because I was but a minor. Now that seven years have passed and I’ve become an adult, it’s time for me to own up to the consequences of my actions."

The discussions rolling in the live broadcast reached an unprecedented height. Let alone the netizens, even He Juan was taken aback, as he had not expected Ye Hu to make an appearance in public. Him showing up here meant that he would be taking half of the limelight from He Juan, thrust into the public’s eyes to be scrutinized and inspected as they pleased.
He Juan couldn’t help but feel deeply moved. Ye Hu was taking an extremely big risk here. From now on, his life would be turned upside down, and he might even be recognized whenever he went. Yet he was still willing to come forward and accept the consequences, just to help He Juan.

Thanks to Ye Hu’s appearance, the court was thrown into chaos, and the hearing had to be postponed until an indefinite time in the future.
Ye Hu’s action did not stop there.
Under Prime Minister Liang Yuanjun’s supervision, he accepted interviews from a few trustworthy media outlets, and some even proposed to create a book based on his life story. The public’s sympathy continued to grow with each article published about him, which only impacted He Juan positively. Even the negative articles failed to dent his popularity.
Amidst the boiling discussions that showed no signs of abating, the fierce and chilling winter ended, and a few fresh buds of flowers began to blossom amidst the snowy remnants, bringing the sweet fragrance of spring.
Two months after He Juan’s trial started, the court finally released the date of the final judgment.
He Juan opted not to participate that day because it was expected that his presence would only add to the ruckus outside the courthouse, so he had been ordered to just stay home.
Mu Yuze, however, couldn’t possibly miss out on it.
Apparently, it had been a good decision to leave He Juan out of this because that day, nearly a hundred people crowded around the courthouse, eagerly awaiting XIU’s final verdict as if it were their own. Some had even squatted early in the morning, despite the fact that they could have just watched the results through the live broadcast. 𝘧𝓇ℯ𝑒𝓌𝑒𝑏𝓃𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘭.𝒸ℴ𝓂
In the end, Mu Yuze had to park his car further away and walk a few minutes before he could slip into the courthouse to meet up with Kang Guanyu and Li Zhi.
Soon after everyone settled, the judge started to recite the order with a solemn voice, "According to the decision made by the panel of judges, we hereby declare that the defendant He Juan or XIU will be—"

Standing on the balcony, He Juan basked in the rare warmth of the sunshine, looking so carefree and at ease as if the court hearing today had nothing to do with him. The sound of hurried footsteps approached him from behind, tearing his attention away from the beautiful birds perched on the tree branch nearby.
Just as he turned around, he was pounced by a dark shadow who clung onto him like a lifeline.
Entirely by reflex, He Juan supported the other person’s buttocks, taking a step back to regain his balance. "Xiao Ze?" He asked in surprise. "Has the hearing ended? You..." shock washed over him when he sensed warm droplets of tears falling onto his shoulder. "Wait, are you crying?"
He Juan wanted to see Mu Yuze’s face, but the omega was adamant on burying his face into the crook of He Juan’s neck, his body trembling ever so slightly. He cried so silently, so quietly that only ragged breathing betrayed his distress. He Juan’s heart ached for him, but he could do nothing but stroke the omega’s back, hoping that it could bring him some comfort.
"What is it? Did it not go as planned?" He Juan asked softly, fearing that he would agitate the omega further.
Mu Yuze asked him with a thick nasal tone, "What if... what if you ended up going to jail?"
He Juan’s reply came in a heartbeat as if the answer had been on his mind for a long time, "Well, I will do everything I can to break free. It may take some time, but I believe I can stage a believable accident to convince everyone that I’ve died in the process, then I will come back to you." He grimaced, "But it means I need to make you wait for me again. What did the judges say?" He began to feel nervous.
This time, Mu Yuze no longer kept him in suspense and revealed the final order,
"You don’t need to serve in prison, but in exchange, you’re on intensive probation. It means that whatever you do, wherever you go, there will be someone to shadow you. So long as you commit a violation, you will be convicted with twice the punishment. This period will go on for five years, and..."
He Juan’s brow twitched. "And? Who’s the one tasked to shadow me?"
"Guess," Mu Yuze said, his voice muffled.
Sensing something from his tone, He Juan’s eyes flew wide in astonishment. "Don’t tell me..."
Mu Yuze finally couldn’t restrain himself anymore and eased back, revealing the obvious smiles in his red-rimmed eyes and the insuppressible curve of his lips. "I volunteered to," he said softly, cupping He Juan’s face with both hands. "I told Captain Li that... my baby and I need to be close to our Alpha at all times."
He Juan could understand each word Mu Yuze said, but when it was strung into one sentence, he found his mind blanking out. Jaws hanging open, he gawked at the omega in shock, still struggling to process the sheer amount of information in that one sentence.
He stammered, almost tripping over his words, "W–What... what did you just say? Whose baby...?"
The corner of Mu Yuze’s lips deepened. He gently knocked his forehead against He Juan’s. "Mine," he said with a hint of tremor in his voice, emotional. "Ours. I’m nine weeks along. Gege, we’re going to be family for real."
He Juan was certain that his expression must have looked absolutely foolish right now, with eyes wide in shock and mouth falling open like an idiot, but he wasn’t in the mind to care about appearance. Especially not now. His mind was reeling from all he had just heard, and he clutched onto the omega tighter to convince himself that he wasn’t dreaming this up.
He croaked out. "...what?"
Baby? Did he just say baby? Their baby? His and Mu Yuze’s baby...?
Mu Yuze had been nervous about revealing the news at first. After all, this was the same person who had given him the contraceptive pill. However, all those doubts and uncertainties instantly evaporated once he saw the burgeoning joy in He Juan’s eyes, though his entire person was still frozen in shock.
Unable to contain his happiness, Mu Yuze burst out into delightful laughter, his giggles reverberating through the air like the wind chimes.
"Gege, I really shocked you this time, huh?" he teased. The corners of his eyes were still tinged in a rosy hue from the remnants of tears, and the tip of his nose was slightly red from the cold. His eyes were squinted in bliss, and he was beaming from ear to ear, revealing a set of pearly white teeth.
Gazing at him like this, He Juan was struck with the realization – oh, this might be the first time he’d ever seen Mu Yuze laugh in such a carefree and joyful way.
It felt like the first brush of spring had just descended into He Juan’s wintry world, prompting a meadow of flowers to bloom in his long barren heart.
"You..." He Juan’s voice shook, at an utter loss of words. He was so very close to losing his wits. "You’re pregnant? You are, Mu Yuze? With... with a baby?"
"Yes," Mu Yuze responded with a grin. He placed a gentle hand on his stomach, caressing it with love and tenderness. "It’s not showing yet, but it’s really here, Gege. Our baby."
"Our baby..." He Juan echoed, breathless. Then again, more excited, "Our baby!"
Without warning, He Juan spun them in circles, evoking another peal of giggles from Mu Yuze.
"This time, I will really stick to you forever, Gege," he declared, almost solemnly.
He Juan gazed at the omega with all the tenderness and affection he had within him, tears gathering in the corner of his eyes. "Of course," he chuckled through the tears. "I expect no less from the one and only Officer Mu who managed to capture me."
He knew how it felt like to lose everything and fall into the darkest abyss. He nearly gave up on himself and succumbed to the depths of despair, yet it was all thanks to this pure flower that remained in his bloodstained grasp... the flower that blossomed with such dazzling radiance... that he could crawl his way out of the darkness and witness the majestic scenery the mortal world had to offer.
It was Mu Yuze who showed him this breathtaking joy, and filled him with a new purpose.
Amidst the velvety sound of the omega’s joyful laughter, the chilling air scented with the sweetness of spring, and the happiness bubbling in his chest, He Juan couldn’t help but close his eyes to savor the overwhelming sensation.
For the first time in forever, he felt completely at peace.
