Chapter 237: Chapter 237: The Factions

Suddenly, Professor Abraham dropped a stack of paper in front of Mater.

"What is this?" The black cat meowed.

Howard didn’t understand what Mater was saying but his obviously confused expression was not hard to read.

"Familiar also needs to study. If you want to protect your owner better, you must study." Professor Abraham said.

"Who do you think I am? I am the Dark Lord! I need no studying!"

Mater stood on two legs and spread his front legs wide like he was embracing the sky. No one understood what he’s saying except for Selina and the servants.

The black cat laughed menacingly. In his head, his laugh was dark, low, and eerie.

But in reality, the cat sounded like it giggled constantly and seemed rather cute.

"Aww! You cute little world destroyer!"

Professor Abraham reached his hand over to pet Mater. The black cat spammed a Nether Beam at his hand. A gust of shockwave washed over the entire classroom, surprising everyone.

Howard’s hand was knocked back but he was unharmed. Mater used very little force to make sure he wasn’t injured.

But that little force shocked Professor Abraham. He could see faint dark veins appearing on his skin before slowly disappearing away.

"Your cat is something, huh?" Professor Abraham said.

"I’m very sorry, Professor. Mater doesn’t like people touching him..." Selina sweated profusely.

"If I was it, I would also be the same." Professor Abraham squinted his eyes.

He faintly remembered that power from somewhere. He read it somewhere before. An ancient, unpredictable power that could bring ruin to the entire world. But Professor Abraham wasn’t sure. It could be just some Psionic Skill that he wasn’t familiar with.

Professor Abraham pulled Selina to the side.

"Where did you get this cat?" He asked.

"He just appeared in my house one day." Selina said.

"Is it... you know. Evil?"

"Not more than the average kitty I assure you. They all want to dominate the world and enslave human kind. Well, they already did.

I feed him, bathe him, and do almost anything for him." Selina smiled sweetly.

The goth girl picked the black cat and scrubbed her cheek against the cat’s soft fur aggressively. The cat growled intensively, showing its disapproval but it didn’t attack Selina.

’Maybe I’m overthinking it...’ Howard temporarily threw this suspicion out of his mind. The cat can be very powerful but it was still just a cat. As long as Selina was there, there should be no problem at all.

Astrid whispered to Miles, "Did you see that power?"

Miles nodded and gulped, "That was not a Menace attack. That’s a Hazard power for sure."

"She didn’t lie when she said I would lose if the cat entered the battle, huh?" Oscar said.

Selina’s university life officially started. The ceremony had given her a sense of what this Institute actually was. It was a place to learn, practice, and grow. But it was also a mini battlefield.

Each class was its own group. And there were many student factions consisting of students from multiple groups inside the Institute.

The Student Council, which was led by the Student President.

The Syndicate, which was led by three largest corporations in Aeliz, and was the second in power in the Institute.

The Cyberspace, which consisted of many technicians, chemists, psychosmiths, traders, and inventors. This was a rather neutral faction with the emphasis on equality and fair trading.

The Brotherhood, which was led by the actual military and law enforcement of the Union. Only officials that already served or would be serving could enter this faction.

The Outsiders. This group was created by Psychics that didn’t belong anywhere. They made this faction to protect themselves. This was the weakest faction out of all the factions.

Lastly, there was the Veil. The Veil was a group consisting of shape-shifting and spymaster Psychics. Their identities were usually kept secrets and only high-ranking members of the factions could know the identities of their members.

Cole joined the Brotherhood, as he should be. His goal in the Institute was to achieve a diploma to become a Sergeant.

Loretta and Becky both joined the Cyberspace. It was the only faction that would favor them and their craft. Their equality and fair-trade rules were also very tempting.

Oscar automatically became a member of the Syndicate because of his status. The guy really didn’t care much about the faction and his only goal was to grow stronger. He was also the only one that joined two factions. As a child soldier himself, he also joined the Brotherhood.

The Syndicate had a big problem about this as every corporation’s biggest enemy was the government. But they didn’t dare to say anything. Oscar walked too closely with the Union and as rich as they were, they’re nothing compared to actual military power.

Ken Elliot and Jesse O’Shea joined the Outsiders, surprisingly. They could join Cyberspace under the ’freelancer’ type but they refused to do so. They felt more at home with the average people.

Clive stayed neutral, a rare breed inside the Institute.

Then there was Mater’s group. Selina Isles. Alice Rosenberg (Aurora). Jean Mollison (Evelynn). And Blanche Isle (The White Rat).

Selina didn’t care much about these factions. The rest only listened to Mater.

The black cat told Selina to join the Student Council.

"But why?! Can’t I just join the Outsiders or something? I don’t want to do more work! I already have a godly amount of homework!"

Selina cried and knelt at the feet of the black cat. They had returned to their dorm room.

"You don’t understand, girl. This miniaturized society is for you to build up your connections. Connections that you would retain once you got out of here. 𝕗𝐫𝚎𝗲𝘄𝐞𝕓𝐧𝕠𝘃𝕖𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝚖

Those ’employees’ in the Student Council would become actual officials in the Union some say.

Do you want to go after your parents? Do you want to find out what happened to them? To do that you need power and influence. The first I can give you.

The second, you need to work for it."

Selina sighed. She knew Mater wasn’t wrong.

"I understand."
