Chapter 19: Chapter 19: Misunderstanding

"Julian Donovan... lives next door..."

"Julian Donovan?"

Lara Nash looked completely shocked. Naomi Shaw nodded.

"I just went out to take out the trash and saw him..."

Lara asked with a frown,

"Then why are you crying like this?"

Lara shouldn’t have asked. The question made the tip of Naomi Shaw’s nose tingle as she was about to cry again.

"He said... I only moved here to pester him..."

"What?"

Lara Nash was furious.

"He’s so full of himself! Why didn’t you explain it to him?"

Naomi Shaw looked crestfallen.

"He wouldn’t listen..."

"He’s going too far!"

Lara Nash cursed resentfully, then pulled Naomi Shaw up from her seat.

"Come with me. We’re going to find him, explain the situation with the house, and make him apologize to you!"

"There’s no need..."

Naomi Shaw didn’t want to go. ’He already doesn’t want to see me. If I go and demand an apology, it’ll only make him despise me more.’ But she couldn’t win against Lara Nash and was dragged outside.

Julian Donovan had just finished showering and changed into loungewear when he heard a thunderous pounding on his door. He narrowed his eyes warily. The most basic survival skill he’d learned these past few days was vigilance. No one knew he lived here. ’Could an enemy have found me this quickly?’

He walked to the door and checked the video intercom, surprised to see it was Naomi Shaw. Her fair face was filled with unease, and another girl he didn’t recognize stood behind her. A flicker of annoyance crossed his face, and he was about to turn away and ignore her when the image of her wronged expression in the yard earlier flashed through his mind.

For reasons he couldn’t quite explain, he turned and opened the door, but his tone was cold as he asked,

"What is it?"

Outside, Naomi Shaw had been waiting anxiously. When no one answered for what felt like an eternity, she was just about to pull Lara Nash away. She froze when Julian Donovan suddenly opened the door. But his icy expression made her lower her gaze, and she stood there biting her lip, having forgotten why she’d come.

Lara, standing beside her, gave her an impatient push.

"Naomi, what are you spacing out for? Hurry up and explain everything to him!"

Pushed by Lara, Naomi Shaw lost her balance and stumbled right into Julian Donovan’s arms. He instinctively reached out and caught her, the girl’s faint, sweet fragrance instantly filling his senses.

Naomi Shaw scrambled away from him in a fluster, her face flushed scarlet.

"S-Sorry, I didn’t mean to..."

’It’s over, it’s over,’ she thought. ’He already thought I was pestering him, and now I’ve thrown myself into his arms. I can’t even imagine what he must think of me now.’

Julian Donovan didn’t say anything. He had seen the girl who came with her give the push. Glancing at her crimson face, he asked calmly,

"What did you want?"

Hearing no anger in his voice, Naomi Shaw finally found the courage to lift her face and look at him, her clear eyes full of sincerity.

"I-I came to explain... Lara found this house for me. I had absolutely no idea you lived here, too..."
