Consequences of Dumping the Obsessive Boss: Stuck with Him Forever-Chapter 42: Commercial Marriage Alliance, Testing the Waters
Worried that her daughter might suffer a loss, Mrs. Huxley couldn’t help but put down her chopsticks and carefully remind her.
"Oh, don’t worry, I’ve got it all under control. I’ve known him for a long time, I really understand him." Tina Huxley didn’t want to discuss how to win over Maxim Sinclair at the dinner table. She interrupted Mrs. Huxley, got up, and served her a bowl of soup, "Let’s eat first, we can talk about other things after dinner."
"I have an impression of this child, Maxim Sinclair," Old Master Huxley, who was sitting at the head of the table, suddenly spoke up, "Among the younger generation, he certainly is the most outstanding one. Such a young man really matches well with our family’s child in terms of social standing."
"I think so too," Mr. Huxley said, rubbing his wine glass with his right hand, "The only one who matches his status could be our Tina; other daughters don’t quite measure up to his level." 𝕗𝚛𝚎𝚎𝐰𝗲𝗯𝗻𝚘𝚟𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝕞
"Dad, don’t get ahead of yourself now. We don’t even have any tangible signs yet."
Listening to Mr. Huxley, Tina couldn’t help but think of Summer Lowell, and bad speculations popped into her mind, so she quickly diverted the topic: "Is the project with the Sinclair Family important? Would Maxim Sinclair really send someone high-ranking to liaise with me?"
Reminded by her words, Mr. Huxley thought for a moment and said, "No worries, I’ll call him myself tomorrow, find an excuse to let him teach you, give you more opportunities to be alone with him. Also, stay steady, keep business and personal matters separate; don’t mix them up."
"Oh, don’t worry, I won’t. Maxim hates people who confound business with personal issues, I know that well. Besides, the most important thing in alliance through marriage is the abilities of both parties. I have my eyes on his abilities, and naturally, he also needs to see what I’m capable of."
"I’m relieved to hear you say so. I’ll be looking forward to your good news." Mr. Huxley raised his wine glass for a toast with Old Master Huxley, and said with a cheerful laugh: "Father, if Maxim Sinclair can really become our Huxley family’s son-in-law, then our family’s enterprise would definitely rise by a few more levels."
Old Master Huxley took a sip of his drink and placed the cup down, then looked at Mrs. Huxley, advising: "When you have time, go to the Matchmaker’s Shrine, pray for Tina, and bless her with success in winning over Maxim Sinclair."
"I’ve already made an appointment with the master, I’ll go next weekend," Mrs. Huxley smiled so widely, one couldn’t see her eyes, "I heard that master is incredibly effective; all who’s paid to seek a match have had success. I’ve been booking since last year, and it just happens that the date is next week, which is perfect because Tina has found someone she likes before that date."
With that, everyone at the dinner table laughed together.
...
"President Sinclair, here is the information you requested about the East City land auction. The auction is happening this Friday night, and the land parcel you put up is the highlight of this event. I’ve already received numerous calls trying to get some insights."
Assistant Collins smiled, spreading out the documents in front of Maxim Sinclair.
Maxim Sinclair adjusted his glasses, picked up the documents, and casually flipped through them. Upon reaching the second page, he saw a familiar name: "Omni Industries? How did the Huxley Family’s company get involved? If I’m not mistaken, Old Master Huxley, the Chairman of the Huxley Family, has plenty of land under his name! So why participate in this auction? What’s the plan with hoarding that much land, playing landlord?"
Such questions couldn’t be answered by Assistant Collins. He adjusted his glasses as well and spoke of a call from Omni Industries’ marketing director: "Omni Industries’ marketing director and I are somewhat acquainted, and he called yesterday to inquire about the East City land. Although it was disguised, it was clear that the call’s true intent was the land."
Just as he spoke, Maxim Sinclair’s phone on the side rang. He glanced down and broke into a bemused smile: "What a coincidence, a call from the Huxley Family too."
Picking up the phone, Maxim Sinclair greeted Mr. Huxley with a polite tone: "Uncle Huxley, long time no see. How have you and Aunt been lately? And Grandpa Huxley, I haven’t played chess with him in a while. Has he found a new chess partner?"
"Your aunt and I are both well, just your Grandpa Huxley often mentions you. He says he hasn’t encountered such a formidable chess opponent since you. Just last weekend, while I was playing chess with him, he complained about my poor skills and kept saying he needs to prepare a grand gift to invite you over to the Huxley place for a few games."
Maxim Sinclair laughed heartily: "I really couldn’t accept; I’ve just been too busy with work. When I find some free time, I’ll definitely bring a great gift to see Grandpa Huxley for some chess matches."
After some pleasantries, Mr. Huxley finally got to the point: "So, I heard from my people that the East City land, the highlight of Friday’s auction, was put up by you?"
"That’s right. The land is no use to me; it’s just sitting there, so I figured why not let others benefit from it?" Maxim Sinclair replied swiftly, patiently waiting for what came next.
"What a coincidence, we could really use that parcel. I’m planning to send someone to bid for it."
"What?" Maxim Sinclair raised his voice in surprise, asking, "Uncle Huxley has his eyes on that piece of land too? What a situation! Had I known earlier that you wanted it, I wouldn’t have sent it to the auction!"
"Hahaha, it’s not that serious; it’s actually Tina who told me about the land. I’m calling today just to inquire about the land’s details since the information from the auction house is quite brief."
"That’s no big issue; I’ll just have my assistant send you the relevant materials of the land via email," Maxim Sinclair said, his tone carrying a hint of regret, with several sighs, "What a situation this has turned out to be."
On the other end, Mr. Huxley still had laughter in his voice: "Oh, it’s no trouble, I’ll just have someone go to the auction house to bid on Friday. I’ve got things on my end too, be sure to come over for a meal when you have time! I remember you loved your Aunt’s cooking when you were a kid; now that you’re grown, you don’t come by often anymore from being too busy!"
Maxim Sinclair maintained his respectful tone: "Sure, Uncle, you carry on with your work. When I have some time, I’ll go to visit you and Aunt, and please pass my regards to Grandpa Huxley. I’ll definitely find time to see him for a chess game."
"All right, I’ll convey your message," Mr. Huxley said, and then hung up the phone.
On this side, Maxim Sinclair set down his phone, picked up his coffee cup, and casually instructed the assistant standing at the table: "Go organize the information about the East City lot that’s for auction and send it to the assistant of the president at Omni Industries."
"Okay, President Sinclair. But how detailed do you want the information?"
"Nothing to hide. The call was to gauge my stance. As for the information, it’s land meant to be sold anyway."
