Consequences of Dumping the Obsessive Boss: Stuck with Him Forever-Chapter 71: Was Last Night Really Just a Dream?
This sleep left Summer Lowell feeling weak all over, her mind in a daze.
She lay on the bed, staring blankly at the ceiling for a while before she slowly sat up against the headboard, pressing the quilt against her.
When a person is sick, their reactions are always a bit delayed.
Summer held the insulated cup by the bedside, slowly drinking water. It wasn’t until the cup was empty that she finally realized...
"Wait, that’s not right. Last time I drank this water last night, there was barely a sip left. How come now..."
After taking cold medicine last night, she drank until there was only a little water left at the bottom of the cup, too lazy to get up and refill it from the kitchen.
Yet now, when she picked it up just now, the cup was full of hot water, and the temperature was even hotter than when she poured it last night, not the usual mix of half cold and half hot water she preferred.
The more she thought about it, the more terrifying it seemed.
Summer broke into a cold sweat on her back, placed the cup back in its place, got out of bed, picked up the clothes rack, and cautiously moved to the bathroom door attached to the bedroom, carefully pushing the door open with her hand.
The bathroom was empty.
Only then did Summer let out a slight sigh of relief, turning to walk out of the bedroom.
Of course, there was no sign of anyone in the living room either.
After confirming that she was alone in the house, Summer, feeling drained, lazily slumped onto the sofa, fiddling absentmindedly with the clothes rack. After a long while, she murmured to herself, "Could it be I was dreaming? No way, why would I dream about him when I’m bored!"
But last night, while she was groggy, it felt like someone was meticulously taking care of her.
And that person seemed like Maxim Sinclair.
Was she overthinking it?
Summer pondered, raising her head to look at the blank white wall, whispering, "Should I install real-time surveillance at home?"
The thought just emerged but was quickly dismissed by her.
Considering the current situation, no matter where she lived, Maxim Sinclair could come and go as if it were an uninhabited place. Even if she installed cameras, it would be a waste of effort.
Especially since, given her current situation, she wasn’t even sure how much longer she could stay domestically.
Maybe she’d have to pack her things and return to Leonia tomorrow.
Forget it.
Feeling aimless, Summer reached for her phone and opened the food delivery app.
Feeling too weak to cook and not wanting to go out, she decided to order something casual to eat.
After lunch, still feeling weak all over, Summer returned to bed and slept for another two hours.
Upon waking again, Summer wrapped in her quilt and leaned back against the headboard, staring blankly out the window.
She hadn’t felt this idle in a long time. Amidst her bewilderment, everything seemed so unreal to Summer.
She suddenly felt as if she had been abandoned by the whole world.
In that moment, she felt a vague regret in her heart, regretting her impulsive decision to return home to work.
Actually, staying at The Leonia Headquarters was quite nice. Although there wasn’t much room for advancement there, and the salary wasn’t as favorable as here,
at least she had friends there, unlike here where there were only enemies.
She didn’t know whom to share her pent-up thoughts with.
Summer slowly curled up her body, sliding her arms down to hug her legs, resting her chin lightly on her knees, blinking only after a long time.
She hated this feeling of being wrapped in loneliness, always had. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝙚𝔀𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝒐𝒎
Usually, the heavy workload filled her life, momentarily suppressing that feeling of solitude.
But now, not even sure if she could keep her job, she had no mood for a pleasant vacation.
She sat there dazed until a sudden ring pierced the silence of the room.
Summer, who was daydreaming aimlessly, was startled by the ring, sitting up straight and picking up her phone. Seeing the caller ID on the screen, she nervously bit her lip.
It was Noah calling.
Since she was on mandatory leave, this call was very likely to convey the final decision.
Whether she would stay or go, perhaps this call would tell.
"Hello, President Norris."
Summer answered the call, holding her breath to listen to the voice on the other end.
Noah’s voice on the other end was cheerful, asking first about Summer’s health: "How are you resting at home? Are you feeling any better?"
"Thanks for your concern, President Norris. I’m recovering well. I just woke up from a nap, and I haven’t had such a relaxing rest in a long time," Summer replied with a smile.
"That’s good. You’ve been working too hard lately. I was worried that suddenly taking a break might be hard for your body to adjust to," Noah laughed, then got to the point of the call, "I called to tell you that today, several of us in the company, along with higher management, have identified the person spreading the rumors."
Summer paused at his words, then realized what Noah meant by rumors, and a spark of hope flickered in her eyes: "Was the person spreading the rumors bought off?"
"You guessed right. Indeed, someone was bribing our company staff to intentionally spread rumors that were unfavorable to you. Luckily, I sensed something off early on; otherwise, we would have mistakenly lost a valuable team member,"
Noah’s tone carried traces of both fear and relief.
Summer had almost been dismissed.
If it weren’t for him firmly insisting on her innocence and consistently speaking up for her, Summer might not have cleared this hurdle.
Despite hearing this good news, Summer’s emotions showed little fluctuation.
Back at the competition site, when she confronted Maxim Sinclair with her damaged entry, she had already anticipated that more would come at her afterward.
At this thought, Summer’s mind returned to the ambiguous figure from last night.
Her mouth turned up in a bitter smile; last night’s incident was surely a dream. Maxim Sinclair would be eager for her to leave Stellarion quickly; how could he possibly take care of her?
For him not to kick her while she’s down was already kind enough.
Noah, not hearing her response for a long time, asked, "Summer? Are you still there? What’s going on?"
Caught in her thoughts, Summer let out a sound of acknowledgment, hastily replying, "Maybe the signal isn’t great. Go ahead, President Norris, I’m listening."
"I was wondering if you weren’t curious about who the rumor spreader was?"
Having uncovered the sabotage behind the scenes, Noah felt somewhat relieved.
Compared to the design director messing up two S-level projects due to dereliction, the narrative of a competitor planting a mole deliberately causing trouble is more convincing to those in headquarters who already looked down on Summer.
Summer feigned great curiosity: "It wasn’t someone from the design department, was it?"
"It wasn’t from the design department. I’ve already stressed to the headquarters that the person bribed wasn’t from the design department, so that they won’t question your management skills."
