COTE : There is Something Wrong With Hikigaya-Chapter 48 - : The Wreckage of Class D
Chapter 48: Chapter 48: The Wreckage of Class D
Chabashira-sensei left, as merciless as a guy ghosting someone after a one-night stand. Well, to be fair, one-night stands themselves are pretty heartless.
Her cold and commanding presence today had crushed the students of Class D like a giant boulder. Everything she said and did was like dumping bottles of soda and Mentos into a toilet—
Boom. Explosion.
All the frustration, resentment, and conflict erupted at once. The "toilet" of Class D had blown up, spraying filth everywhere. And the person responsible?
Gone. Walked away without a care in the world.
Imagine being an innocent bystander, only to suddenly get splashed with disgusting filth—right in the face, no less. Who wouldn't be furious?
The ones most enraged were the students who had been diligent since the start—those who followed the rules, studied hard, and took things seriously.
Yukimura was a prime example. Normally, he was as invisible as a background character. But now, it was like someone had lit a fuse in him. He was even more explosive than Sudou, firing off an all-out verbal assault against Ike, Yamauchi, Sudou, and the rest of the class slackers.
His attacks were so relentless that people were left speechless. It was like watching a scene straight out of a courtroom drama.
If Hirata hadn't stepped in to calm things down, an actual fight might have broken out.
In reality, Hirata, Horikita, and others were victims in this mess too. Hikigaya could understand why they were so angry.
After all, they had worked hard, studied diligently, and done their best. But because of their classmates' incompetence, their efforts were being dragged down with them.
It was like working hard at a job for a whole month, only to have your paycheck wiped out because of some useless coworker's mistake.
Who wouldn't be pissed?
They had done nothing wrong. Why should they suffer because of someone else's failure?
But... that's what it means to be in a group.
That's just how unfair reality can be.

Chabashira-sensei, you better not let this fire burn out of control.
Ike and the others, after getting chewed out by Yukimura, at least had the sense to stay quiet. But Sudou? He wasn't the type to back down.
After all, this was the same guy who wasn't afraid to throw punches at a girl.
Sudou being late, leaving early, skipping class, and sleeping was already a common sight in Class D. In fact, he was already fuming from Chabashira-sensei's earlier sarcasm, so he kicked over the desk and chair in front of him, looking ready to charge at Yukimura and teach that four-eyed guy a lesson.
After all, for teenage boys, "admitting mistakes and apologizing" is far less important than "saving face." They say their pride matters more than anything, but in reality, it's just an excuse to avoid responsibility and run from the truth.
Everyone was blaming each other, pushing responsibility away, making sure they weren't the ones in trouble. Some were completely out of it, while others had just given up. There was even one guy looking in a small mirror, fixing his hair with a smug expression. Class D was a total mess—like a battlefield in complete chaos.
Just as Yukimura and Sudou were about to throw punches, Hirata, the peacemaker, stepped in once again. Kushida also came forward to calm things down. Both of them were popular and well-respected among the boys and girls in the class, and after some effort, they barely managed to get the situation under control.
"Well, all tragedies come from our own weaknesses."
Hikigaya shook his head at the sight. The upperclassman who once argued with Sudou had said, "Sooner or later, you'll see what hell looks like." Now, those words had come true.
Even Hikigaya felt a bit irritated. At the same time, a deep sense of loneliness crept in. For a brief moment, he felt a strange distance between himself and the students in front of him. He was physically present in the class, yet he had no sense of belonging—like a ghost floating above, watching everyone from an outsider's perspective.
"Hey, Hikigaya!"
A sudden voice snapped him out of his wandering thoughts, making him feel like he had returned to reality, his feet once again touching solid ground.
"You knew something from the start, didn't you?"
While Hikigaya was lost in thought, Horikita had somehow appeared in front of him. The last time he talked to this cold and distant girl... was when, exactly?
Oh right, ever since that swimming class, they hadn't spoken a word. Even though they were seatmates, sitting less than a meter and a half apart, they hadn't even exchanged a simple greeting. Both of them always wore the same indifferent expressions—anyone could tell what that meant.
It had become an unspoken rule: "Whoever speaks first loses." It was kind of like two people stubbornly refusing to give in. Pretty ridiculous, really.
Hikigaya looked up at her but didn't answer her question. To him, the question was meaningless.
Seeing his reaction, Horikita furrowed her brows even more. But she wasn't someone who gave up easily, so she repeated the question.
"Hikigaya, you figured out the truth about this school from the beginning, didn't you?"
Hikigaya didn't really want to answer, but the determination and frustration in Horikita's eyes made him sigh.
"It's frustrating, isn't it? Why did you end up stuck in such a lousy class? If only you had noticed earlier..."
With every word Hikigaya spoke, Horikita's face grew darker.
"Right now, you're just trying to regain your confidence through me. So how are you any different from those people who immediately shifted blame onto others?"
"So, you want me to say, 'Sorry, I only just found out the truth about this school' so you can reassure yourself that you're still exceptional, not as bad as Chabashira-sensei made you out to be, right? Sorry, Horikita, but I'm not the kind of person who says nice things."
Horikita's fists were clenched tightly, but to Hikigaya's surprise, she didn't get mad right away.
"...I was too impulsive."
She gritted her teeth, clearly unwilling to accept it, yet she still met Hikigaya's gaze head-on, refusing to look away. Maybe that was the last bit of pride she had left.
Hikigaya couldn't help but say a little more.
"Let me put it plainly—you're too wrapped up in your own world, completely shutting out everything else. You never cared about this class or the people in it. I mean, yeah, it's a mess, but at least take a closer look and figure out what kind of mess it actually is."
"A mess, huh..."
Horikita seemed a bit bothered by the way Hikigaya phrased it, but after glancing around, she had to admit—it was pretty accurate.
