Chapter 20 -20: Young Master Yan Visits

Once the secretary had placed his and Mr. Yan’s bags in the car, the driver manoeuvred the car out of the parking space.

“Master, where to?” The driver asked, unaware of Mr. Yan’s next itinerary and he glanced at him through the rearview mirror.

“Back to the company.”

Mr. Yan took out his laptop and opened an email that Qin Xiu had sent half an hour ago. He skimmed through it noting the current status of the construction at the base — confirming that everything was running smoothly. After closing that email, he opened another.

While doing so, he instructed his secretary seated in front, “Xiao Zhang, send me the list of potential collaborators for today’s project.”

“Understood, Mr. Yan.”

Mr. Yan had taken over as President and Chairman of the Yanhuang Group at the tender age of eighteen from his father. Back then, feeling uncomfortable with the formal titles, he asked his subordinates to call him “Mr. Yan.” This title continued to be used until now.

As for the Tong Family, most people referred to him as “Master”!

His current driver, faithful to the former Mrs. Yan, was not just a driver but also a bodyguard.

The secretary sent the list of potential collaborators and related data to Mr. Yan, who spent the journey reviewing them. After returning to the company, he took a shower in the resting room behind his office and emerged, refreshed and dressed in casual attire.

His driver, who had been waiting for him since morning, saw him coming out and accompanied him into the elevator.

“Master, the old lady called just now. She said that she and the old gentleman are headed to the Zhu Family. She asked when you would be leaving.”

“Hmm,” Mr. Yan acknowledged, dialing his mother’s number on his phone, “Mom, I’m leaving now.”

As soon as he finished speaking, he hung up the phone without waiting for the old Mrs. Yan’s reply.

The area where the Zhu Family’s villa was located was about a half-hour drive from Yanhuang Group. Fittingly, it was located halfway between Yanhuang Group and the Yan Family residence. Thus, when Mr. Yan was led into the house by the Zhu family’s butler, Mr. and Mrs. Yan had just seated themselves.

“Mr. Yan, please have a seat.”

Zhu Zhizhou greeted him first. Not waiting for Mr. Yan’s response, Old Mrs. Yan’s voice followed.

“Our future son-in-law is too polite. He’s the younger one; he should be the one showing respect first!”

Regardless of the old Mrs. Yan’s words, Zhu Zhizhou courteously ushered Mr. Yan into the living room.

Mr. Yan swept his gaze around the bustling room filled with people, but did not see the familiar face he was looking for from the crowd.

“Mr. Zhu, where is Zhu Qianying?”

As soon as Mr. Yan finished speaking, Old Mrs. Yan immediately began to scold him, “Xiaohan, you should call him uncle. How can you refer to him as Mr. Zhu? It’s so impersonal!”

With a smile spreading across his face, Zhu Zhizhou calmly played the mediator, “It doesn’t matter what he calls me, whatever makes Mr. Yan comfortable.”

This future father-in-law of Mr. Yan truly had no air of superiority about him!

“Our future son-in-law, you can’t let this be. Our son has been spoiled since he was a child. He’s almost married now, and yet he still lacks manners!” Old Mrs. Yan was signaling frantically at Mr. Yan while playing peacemaker on his behalf.

However, Mr. Yan paid no attention to his mother. He took a sip of tea and continued with his previous question.

“Is Zhu Qianying still sleeping?”

Nearly everyone in the living room wore expressions of delight at the disaster unfolding. Only a woman in her thirties had a troubled expression on her face.

Zhu Zhizhou’s face mirrored the woman’s troubled expression. After closely observing Mr. Yan’s expression, he stuttered, “Ying’er probably didn’t know that Mrs. Yan, Mr. Yan, and you were coming to visit, so she left home early this morning.”

Zhu Zhizhou had never paid much attention to this daughter. If it weren’t for Mrs. Yan’s call informing him of their impending visit, he would not have thought to look for his daughter.

When he had sent a servant to summon Zhu Qianying, he was informed that Miss Zhu was not in her room.

Attempts to reach Zhu Qianying’s phone were met with the message that it was switched off.

According to the surveillance footage, Zhu Qianying had left the house with a backpack at just after six in the morning. Zhu Zhizhou, anxious not to offend the Yan family, was like an ant on a hot pan, anxiously seeking information about her whereabouts. Even after Mr. and Mrs. Yan had entered the house, there was still no news of Zhu Qianying.

“She left early in the morning? You don’t know where she went?”

Mr. Yan glanced at Zhu Zhizhou. It seemed that the rumors about Zhu Zhizhou’s blatant disregard for his youngest daughter were not unfounded.

The villa’s air conditioning was turned up to its highest setting, yet Zhu Zhizhou was sweating profusely.

“Yes… She’s grown up now, and as her father, I really don’t know where she’s gone…”

This excuse would have worked on anyone else. But not on Mr. Yan.

“He… So, that’s how it is?” Although his face carried a smile, any discerning person could tell that it was a cold, sarcastic smile.

He pulled out his phone and redialed a number from his call history. The speaker crackled to life with the familiar message, “The number you have dialed is switched off, please redial later.”

“Does she always switch off her phone when she leaves?” Mr. Yan’s tone suggested he was not happy.

It was unclear if he was upset about Zhu Qianying not being there or Zhu Zhizhou’s parental negligence.

Seeing her son frowning, Old Mrs. Yan quickly played peacemaker again, “Son, maybe Ying’er’s phone ran out of battery. Besides, we did arrive very unexpectedly, and you didn’t tell her about this beforehand, did you?”

Mr. Yan ignored his mother, “I asked her to wait for my call!” His words were clear. In his opinion, Zhu Qianying had messed up. She hadn’t stayed home obediently waiting for his call and greeting him upon his arrival. Instead, she had gone out.

Mr. Yan stared directly at Zhu Zhizhou. Clearly, he was not going to let the issue drop without getting an answer from him.

Zhu Zhizhou felt uncomfortable under Mr. Yan’s scrutiny, but he genuinely didn’t know how to answer Mr. Yan’s question. After all, he’d never inquired about Zhu Qianying’s whereabouts by calling her. Nor had he ever shown concern for her, at least not in many years.

He didn’t know who she was friends with or what she was doing now. He had no idea about all of this.

Of course, he never felt this was wrong unless the daughter won Mr. Yan’s selection. He had many children, and he certainly couldn’t call every one of them every day to check up on them.

But when questioned like this by Mr. Yan, he didn’t know how to respond. After hesitating for a while, he turned to Chen Jing.

“Ah Jing, do you know where Ying’er went?”

Chen Jing, clearly bewildered, shook her head, “I have no idea!”

After all, she herself needed her daughter’s constant care.

Mr. Yan, seeing neither of them being able to give a straight answer, an anger within him that he had suppressed for the better part of the day was once again starting to show signs of exploding.
