Chapter 19 -19: Visiting the In-Laws
The very next morning, as per usual, Yan Shao was having his breakfast in the dining room, with Uncle Hai quietly waiting by his side.
It wasn’t until Yan Shao picked up a wet cloth to wipe his mouth after finishing his meal that Uncle Hai broke the silence, “Young Master, the Master and Madam have a flight departing at nine o’clock this morning. They should reach the airport around eleven.”
Yan Shao had already stood up and was walking towards the automatic door, “Handle it. I don’t have time.”
Uncle Hai had deliberately mentioned it, hoping that the young master would personally go to the airport to pick up the two of them. Despite being declined, he didn’t give up and followed, “Young Master, if you meet them at the airport, the Madam and the Master will definitely be happy.”
Yan Shao picked up the suit that hung on the rack, shook it and put it on deftly.
“I am not happy!” Yan Shao stated flatly, before picking up his bag from the storage shelf and striding out the door.
The driver, who had been waiting for him outside, quickly greeted him and took his computer bag, “Sir, good morning.”
Yan Shao gave a slight nod, as a form of greeting. On the other side, the driver had already opened the car door for him. After Yan Shao got into the back seat and settled down, the door was closed.
“Sir, where to?”
Unless he’s on a business trip, Yan Shao unfailingly returns to the company at eight each morning.
“Back to the company!” Today was no exception.
“What about Qin Xiu?” During the ordinary course of things, Qin Xiu would often pick Yan Shao up for work and report on some work-related matters during the commute.
The driver was taken aback briefly before replying, “Sir, special assistant Qin left for Roc City early this morning to attend a construction site ceremony.”
Yan Shao actually knew about the matter. It had been planned several days in advance, but he’d completely forgotten about it after the ruckus his mother had caused yesterday.
For the rest of the journey, Yan Shao remained silent, and the driver, not daring to speak out of turn, also remained quiet. They continued this way until they passed a large billboard of a certain villa community. Yan Shao seemed to remember something, took out his phone to dial a number, only to realize that he didn’t have Zhu Qianying’s number.

Hence, he dialed back home.
“Uncle Hai, what’s Zhu Qianying’s phone number?”
Uncle Hai quickly relayed the number, and Yan Shao dialed it in. However, the automated voice message stated, “The number you dialed is currently switched off, please try again later.”
Yan Shao looked at the time, it was seven o’clock. At this hour, she was probably still asleep, right?
With that thought in mind, Yan Shao did not dwell on it. He hung up the phone, put his laptop back on his lap, and busied himself with his work.
Once he returned to the company, Yan Shao started two meetings. After the meetings, he and his secretary started preparing for an important collaboration project that was scheduled for the afternoon.
Once he began working, he completely lost track of time.
The phone on his desk rang. Yan Shao thought it was his secretary, so he picked up the phone and placed it between his ear and shoulder, “Go ahead!”
“Son, are you really angry with Mom?” It was Madame Yan.
“No!” Yan Shao answered with a wooden face, his pen creating a bold black line on the document in his hand.
Claiming he wasn’t angry was, of course, a lie.
His mother loved to make big and small jokes from time to time, and he usually didn’t mind them. Even if he did get angry, it would only last a little while.
But this time, she had played around with their personal safety, causing Yan Shao to seethe in anger.
Even after a night’s sleep, he still could not face his mother calmly.
“Alright, darling, your father and I are going to take a shower and rest. We’re inviting Zhu Qianying over for dinner tonight, alright?”
Clearly, the real purpose of Madame Yan’s call wasn’t to inquire whether her son was still angry or not. She wanted to meet her prospective daughter-in-law as soon as possible.
Once he realized his mother’s true intention, Yan Shao became even angrier, “She’s busy and can’t make it!”
But Madame Yan wasn’t easy to deceive. “Xiao Han, do you want me to call the Zhu Family and ask your future father-in-law for her?”
Yan Shao nearly slammed his phone, “Tong Xiaohua, you’d better stop!”
Having been fooled by his mother just yesterday and now being blackmailed, it would be strange if he didn’t flare up.
“Oh dear, our little Han is blowing up again!” Madame Yan, who seemed accustomed to teasing him, playfully remarked, “Don’t tell me that you haven’t visited your future in-laws yet?”
Jolted by Madame Yan’s reminder, Yan Shao realized that he, in fact, had not visited the Zhu family at all.
“Isn’t that your fault?”
It was better when Madame Yan didn’t mention it, but now that she did, Yan Shao’s simmering anger flamed up again.
“On the first day after she got the results, she said she was tired and wanted to rest, how could I not let her? On the second day, I brought her home, but you and father were nowhere to be seen. Tell me, isn’t that your fault?”
Yan Shao blamed his mother righteously and felt a deep sense of satisfaction.
Madame Yan hadn’t expected this account, and perhaps feeling guilty after her son’s accusations, her earlier domineering air diminished considerably.
“Alright, it was my fault. So, tonight, shall we all go to the Zhu Family to meet your future in-laws?”
Clearly, Madame Yan had a rough idea about everything concerning Zhu Qianying.
Yan Shao had always ignored all the formalities. However, if his mother insisted, he would comply.
“Whatever!”
“Very well, I’ll ask Uncle Hai to call Mr. Zhu.”
Madame Yan seemingly understood her son’s temper very well, knowing he would be impatient with all the formal details, so she took it upon herself to make arrangements.
Yan Shao was glad she took care of it, her actions exactly as per his wishes, “Hmm, you decide.”
“Alright, then your father and I will go prepare gifts now. Shall we pick you up tonight, or would you prefer to go to the Zhu’s by yourself?”
Though having retired for ten years, Madame Yan retained her efficient and forceful method of handling matters.
“I’ll go by myself!”
He was already of age, his parents picking him up after work didn’t make sense.
Upon hanging up Madame Yan’s call, Yan Shao returned to his work.
The afternoon collaboration meeting didn’t go smoothly. Their partner’s newly-appointed CEO, perhaps trying to score points with the board, was unmoving in his negotiations, leaving no room for compromise.
Yan Shao detested those who overstepped their boundaries. The meeting wasn’t making progress and he had had enough. Abruptly, he closed the files, and leaning back, lazily addressed the other party’s CEO, “CEO Lei, I thought we reached consensus at our previous meeting. Apparently, I was mistaken. Since you feel that you are unable to meet our terms, there’s no need to continue these negotiations.”
With that, he abruptly stood up, leaving his documents on the table, and immediately walked out of the conference hall.
The secretary, accustomed to the whims and willfulness of her young boss, calmly packed up the documents and computer Yan Shao had left behind, placing them neatly inside a bag. She then stood up, politely told the ashen-faced CEO Lei, “Goodbye,” and walked out, matching her steps with her boss’s.
