Demon CEO's Hidden Love: Mr Grayson Stole Me From My Abusive Husband-Chapter 235: Something That Would Interest You
Chapter 235: Something That Would Interest You
Mallory gulped as she walked into the dinning room, ever since she moved into the Grayson Manor, each mealtime was akin to a cold war. If one faction misspoke, it would cause tensions to heighten the tensions and further deepen the bad blood.
What was worse, with Zachiel recuperating, everyone at the table were given free reign to act as they pleased, which fuelled her anxiety.
"Come on," Matthew’s voice drew her out of her thoughts, she felt a tight squeeze and averted her eyes to their hands which had been intertwined.
When did that happen? And why didn’t her body react to it?
Retracting her grip, she forced a polite response, "We aren’t married yet, there’s no need to get physical."
Matthew rolled his eyes, "Whatever floats your boat, ginger." he said, then led her to the table, which had only Laura, sitting at it.
On seeing the couple she smiled, "How are you both doing?"
Mallory returned her smile, "We’re doing well," taking a seat next to her name, she asked, "I don’t see Desmond around, is he not joining us for dinner?"
Laura’s smile faultered but for a brief second, "Ah, he’s-" her words were cut off by the arrival of Sophia and Cressida, who was thankfully in lighter spirits.
In other words, sobered up.
Her chin raised, Sophia announced, "Unlike your fiancé, my Desmond is at the company right now, learning the business from his brother." Helping herself to a seat, she cracked a sly grin, "With the way things are going, seating arrangements will change much sooner than we think."
Mallory forced a grin, "Congratulations to him." She turned to Matthew, expecting him to make an input, but he kept quiet.
The rest of the family arrived at the table in their numbers, filling it up with just the head seat left vacant. With Zachiel recuperating, no one had dared to sit there.
Mallory took a quick survey of the table, trying to memorize everyone’s names and faces. In the middle of her analysis, Rowan and his family came in for dinner, surprising the rest of the family.
A wide grin planted itself on Sophia’s face, "What a wonderful surprise! I didn’t think you’d be joining us for dinner! You should have said something!" Something cried with Joy, her arms wide open, receiving a hug from Rowan.
Hugging his mother, he said, "Sloane suggested we cancel our reservation and come see everyone instead."
Mallory couldn’t help but notice the eye roll from Sophia, "Ah, is that so?" Her tone dropped.
Sloane stuck her head forward, locking eyes with Sophia, "What? Am I not allowed to meet my darling mother-in-law?" She teased but Sophia completely ignored her question.
To Anna, she asked, "Why haven’t you called your grandmother all this time? Don’t tell me she’s not only taken you away but stopped you from seeing me too?!"
Before Anna could answer, Sloane responded, "We both know I’m not that petty. And my Anna has an important exam coming up, she doesn’t need any unnecessary distractions."
Edward hissed, "Seeing my mother is a distraction?" He snapped at her.
Sloane shrugged, "She can always see her after her exam. Besides, your mother knows where we live, but she’s never bothered to visit-"
"If you hadn’t left the estate we wouldn’t be having this conversation in the first place." He cut her off, his grip on his cutlery tightened.
Sophia seconded, "She just couldn’t wait to trap my son and steal him away from his family."
"Steal him?" She turned to Rowan, who had already helped himself to a glass of wine, completely removed from the conversation.
Mallory frowned, ’Why doesn’t he say anything to defend his wife?’
Sloane went on, "My husband jumped at the opportunity to move out of this house." Looking at Edward, she said, "You know what they say, distance makes the heart grow fonder."
Laura knitted her brows, "The soup is getting cold, we should save the small talk for later." She clutched onto Sophia’s arm, "Right, mother-in-law?" She asked, her voice a nervous plea.
Sloane parted her lips to speak, but William abruptly got up from the table, "I’m full." He announced walking away from his unused plate.
Laura tried to stop him, but Matthew got up as well cutting off her effort, "I’m full too." He got up abruptly and turned to leave.
Mallory latched onto his wrist, "Where are you..." she tried to ask, but he pried her fingers off and stepped outside of the dining hall, ignoring the stares pointed at him from all angles.
Outside, he dashed for the elevator, stopping it with his foot before it closed, and stepping inside the metal box, joining his cousin’s company.
Naturally, William ignored him and kept his attention on his phone. He had nothing to do with Thane’s uninspiring younger brother, and his current rival for his grandfather’s favor.
"Did you forget what I said that night, cousin?" Matthew asked, piercing into his thoughts.
William flinched, his thumb suspended in the air. However, he quickly regained his composure and answered calmly, "I don’t know what you mean-"
"Don’t pretend, you have a terrible poker face. You and I both know you are hiding quite the nasty secret from the family, from grandfather." Matthew claimed, an all knowing look in his eye.
Turning off his phone, William responded, "I see you have so much time on your hands, but I’d advise you to bother someone else. I have neither the time or the patience to deal with your nonsense." The elevator ding sounded over his reprimand.
Not a second spared, William dashed out of the elevator and made his way down the hallway towards his bedroom.
Meanwhile, back at the dining table, everyone ate in an uncomfortable silence and once the meal was over they dispersed.
Mallory was on her way to go look for Matthew when she was intercepted by a family member, one who she had barely had any interaction with.
"Can I help you?" Mallory asked, her gaze trained on the grin planted on Sloane’s face.
"On the contrary, I think I may be of some help to you." Sloane corrected her, reaching into her bag and pulling out a small velvet box.
"I think I may have something that would interest you."
