Chapter 123: Nitram

The orb was activated and immediately hit several students at the start because they weren’t paying attention. Flain raised his hands in front of himself and managed to block it.

In this test, two things were crucial: concentration and sharp vision. If you only had one of those traits, you wouldn’t pass the trial.

Time passed, and students either lost or gained points. At the end, Flain deliberately kept only one point, estimating that this would be the average. The winner of the trial was a student named Rey Zveroi, the owner of Room 5.

Flain had a three-hour break since he didn’t attend Lion’s Endurance or Iron Will. He used that time as usual — for training.

After three hours of training, it was time for Steel Strength. The class was once again held in the garden. The students sat down, and soon Nyvar Kalledes arrived.

He led them to another part of the garden that Flain hadn’t even known existed. There were long rows of smaller arenas that looked like they were regularly used for combat.

Nyvar explained that today’s lesson would focus on sparring. Each student should pick a partner of similar strength to fight against. Techniques and spells were allowed, but destroying the environment and killing the opponent were strictly forbidden.

Flain didn’t know whom to choose. If Itai were here, he would have picked him since he was quite average — just like Flain’s disguise. But Itai didn’t attend Steel Strength since he was a mage, not a warrior. He obviously couldn’t choose Flor either since Flor was in Room 2, but if he could, he would’ve liked to fight him.

A very familiar and distinct girl approached Flain — Naomi.

"Hey, want to pair with me? We’ve had our conflicts, so I’d like to taste your blood," she said with a smirk.

If Flain weren’t wearing his mask as an average student, he’d have loved to accept. But since Naomi was in Room 6 and clearly very strong, the answer was obviously no.

"Sorry, but no. You’re too much for me," Flain said with a nervous smile.

Naomi’s smirk vanished.

"Hey, you were better during the competition," she said with a scoff and walked away.

Flain approached a random girl.

"Hey, want to go with me?" he asked.

The girl looked at him with her blue eyes.

"Alright," she said.

They entered the arena and stood opposite each other. The girl pulled a sword from her spatial ring, and Flain summoned two swords from his inventory. The fight began.

The girl was rather interesting, but if Flain went full power, he would beat her easily. She used water magic; her most common spell was water tentacles rising from the ground, which wrapped around Flain’s legs to slow him down. She also had some spells to enhance her sword and increase her speed.

Flain was rather bored — at least he would get a few EXP from this. Since he matched his strength to hers, it looked like they were evenly matched. Her best trait was her speed, but she lacked strength.

Professor Nyvar walked between the arenas where fights were taking place until he reached Flain’s.

"Hey Eran, you’re fighting much weaker than you did with me, and on top of that, your opponent is way too weak for you. What’s going on?" he asked.

Flain quickly thought about what to say. "Professor Nyvar, I’m sorry, but this week I’ll be fighting weaker," he said.

Nyvar looked at him. "I see great talent in you, so develop it," he said and continued walking.

"The professor sees something in you, hmm. You don’t have to hold back with me," the girl said and stopped.

Flain didn’t stop, ran around her, and slashed her back. "In a fight, you must not lose focus," he said.

The fight continued until the lecture ended. Flain didn’t attend Mind Range, so he trained for an hour and then just wandered around the academy and talked. Flain asked Flor the same thing he had asked the system, but the system hadn’t answered him — why his room had higher mana density than the Imperial City — and Flor began to explain.

Flor explained that there’s a device called a Nitram. This device artificially increases the percentage of mana density in a small area. Every noble has a Nitram in their estate, because not having one would be foolish, even though it’s extremely expensive.

Of course, there are levels of Nitram — the higher the level, the stronger the Nitram.

The location where the Noble Academy is built is one of the places with the densest natural mana, which already contributes to the amount of EXP gained. Each room has a Nitram — the better the room, the better the Nitram. The Empire of Light really invested in the academy, so the Nitram in Room One is so good that it can be compared to the ones owned by Dukes in their estates.

On the other hand, Room 100 has a Nitram that absorbs mana and thus lowers the mana density, so for the student living there, it’s better to train outdoors than inside.

Since Flain didn’t have any Nitram in the villa, it’s logical that now, in this room, he’s receiving more EXP even though he’s not in the Imperial City.

Flain wanted to know if there was something that artificially increased mana density, because on the road it would be very helpful, as places with high mana density are very rare, and Flain most likely wouldn’t be passing through them often.

But this artificial enhancer wasn’t quite what he had in mind. For one, it was very expensive, so Flain could only afford it with Flor’s help — and Flor would have to spend all his Mana Crystals on it. On top of that, it increases mana density by percentage, so when mana is already dense, it boosts it significantly, but when it’s sparse, it only increases it a little.

Moreover, based on what Flor said, Flain could, at best and by some miracle, get a sub-par one — and only if he was really lucky. So Flain had to accept that he didn’t have access to it and wouldn’t for a long time.

Flain was walking to the next class, which was Magic....
