Chapter 56: Itai’s Madness

When they wanted to enter the dungeon, Itai was blocked by a crowd of adventurers.

"Hey, do you know Morborn?" one adventurer in the crowd asked.

"How is it possible for a stage 1 to catch Morborn’s attention?" another one said.

"That big dude next to him looks pretty strong, too bad he’s just stage 2," another adventurer remarked. frёeωebɳovel.com

"Hey, Cedric, do you know that adventurer?" someone asked Cedric.

"Sorry, Frmoid, but we’re heading into the dungeon now. We can talk later," Cedric said as he made his way through the crowd.

"God, these people are so annoying. A girl can’t even get some shooting practice," Flowe complained, waving her hands around.

Eventually, the group managed to enter the dungeon. The walls were made of dark gray stone, and the air was unpleasant. It was almost identical to dungeon 31.

"The monsters here will be really weak, at most stage 1 Advanced. Our group can handle killing up to three stage 2 Novice monsters at once," Cedric said.

"Up to three? But you’re the only one in the group at stage 2," Itai said.

"Heh, it’s obvious that Zheren hasn’t taught you much because that’s completely normal. Monsters don’t have much intelligence, so with better teamwork and a support who constantly heals us, we can manage. And it’s not just us—practically every normal adventurer group works like that," Cedric explained.

"I understand," Itai mumbled.

After a while, they encountered the first group of five monsters. They were green, hunchbacked humanoids with a long fin on their backs that extended from their heads to the ground, which they used as a weapon. In a way, they slightly resembled goblins, but only a little.

"Itai, watch carefully to see how the fighting is done," Flowe said.

Cedric’s group immediately sprang into action. Flowe fired an arrow that hit one of them in the head, killing it instantly. Uger positioned himself in the center, making the monsters focus their attacks on him.

Cedric attacked the monsters from behind and killed two in a split second. Uger then threw another against the wall, stunning it, and Cedric took care of the rest. Flowe shot down the last one.

"Drah, put them in the bag," Cedric ordered Drah.

"Remember, you have to try to kill monsters with as little damage as possible. The better the quality, the more money you get," Cedric explained.

Drah then put all the corpses into a rather inconspicuous-looking cloth bag, which caught Itai’s attention.

"It’s a special spatial bag sold for around 30 gold at the Adventurers’ Guild. It can fit about 15 average-sized people and is used for collecting monster corpses. But you can’t put anything else in it besides corpses," Cedric explained.

"Well, I don’t have that, but I do have two regular bags, and that’ll do for now. Thanks for the tips. Now our paths will part since I’ll be going with Zheren, who wants to hunt some corpses for himself," Itai said with a smile.

"Wait, I wanted to tell you something," Cedric called out, and Itai turned around.

"It’s clear you’re really new to the Imperial City. Here’s some advice—don’t trust people as easily as you trusted us. In the Imperial City, a lot of people don’t have pure intentions," Cedric said in a serious tone.

"Thank you for the advice," Itai said with a smile.

Itai then walked through the cave and soon saw a rather interesting scene. Three of the same monsters he had encountered earlier were attacking an adventurer who was in the corner, covered in blood, and looked like he was about to die.

Zheren rushed over and started fighting them. He fought aggressively, moving quite fast for a Bone Guardian. He didn’t hold back at all, just like during the fight with Flain. Although he didn’t do too much damage to them because Flain had ordered him not to, not wanting to risk getting too little money for the corpses.

The last monster attacked Zheren from behind, but Zheren easily dodged it. The adventurer on the ground coughed up some blood and stood up.

"Thank you for saving me. You know, I’m a complete beginner, and this is my first hunt. Going solo really wasn’t a good idea, heh," he mumbled.

When Itai saw him, his smile disappeared but then reappeared, even wider. He approached him and, without hesitation, kicked him in the stomach.

The adventurer coughed up more blood. "Please, no," he murmured.

"No? Why not? You’re just an insignificant random person. You’re just competition who, if survived, would needlessly parasite on the dungeon," Itai said, his eyes gleaming with madness.

He then slowly approached the trembling body, sat on him, placed his hands around his neck, and began to strangle him.

"Just the way Flain wants it. He would surely be proud of me," Itai mumbled, looking directly into the adventurer’s tear-filled eyes.

When the eyes no longer showed any signs of life, he climbed off the corpse with a calm smile, as if he hadn’t just strangled someone. He began to search him, finding 3 gold, 3,400 silver, 350 bronze, an adventurer’s badge, and a sword.

Itai didn’t want to risk taking the badge and posing as an adventurer because too many people knew he wasn’t one, and the reception would surely notice. However, it could be useful for selling the corpses, so he wouldn’t have to bribe another adventurer to lend him their badge.

Flain then ordered Zheren to pick up the corpses. They continued walking, and Itai planned to find stronger monsters that would at least somewhat keep up with Zheren, as Itai doubted that the ones Zheren just killed would have good value.

Before long, they spotted another group of adventurers. If they found the corpse of that adventurer, Itai doubted they would connect it to him since monsters were roaming around the dungeon, and there was no reason to link it to him.

Only the fact that someone had robbed him of money and the badge, but Itai doubted that even if they found out, they would confront him. Itai walked with Zheren by his side, feeling quite lucky that Zheren managed to fit in there, as if the dungeon’s ceiling had been just a bit lower, it wouldn’t have worked.

After a few more minutes of walking, they encountered a new type of monster...
