Demonic Skeleton God-Chapter 85: Academy?
Chapter 85: Academy?
"Flor already told me that. I hope it won’t cause any problems. If someone wants me to take off my helmet, I’ll just change my head to a human one using the Necklace of Deception, so it shouldn’t be an issue," said Flain.
"Couldn’t I get some armor too?" asked Itai.
"First of all, I don’t know what you’d need it for—you don’t fight. Second, I doubt your body could handle armor at your Stage because you have a mortal’s body. And third, I don’t feel like waiting for Flor to assemble another armor set," Flain replied.
After that, Flain ignored Itai and smirked—it was time to test his new armor. Flain began removing his old, miserable armor, revealing his skeletal body in its full glory.
"Flain, you’ve changed a lot. You look completely different than when I resurrected you as a skeleton," said Itai as he looked at Flain.
"Don’t say that, you sound like my father," said Flain.
"Technically, I am," Itai countered.
Flain started putting on his new armor. When he was done, he went to look in the mirror. "Perfect," he said when he saw himself.
Flain didn’t know why, but he liked it immensely. He looked very powerful in it, even though strength in this world wasn’t determined by looks, but by how high your Stage was.
As Flain looked at himself in the mirror, he felt something happening in his inventory—someone was calling him on his Night Communicator. This was another excellent feature of his inventory: it detected when something was happening to items stored inside.
Flain pulled out his Night Communicator. Flor was calling him. Who else would call him? After all, he only had Itai and Flor in his contacts, and Itai was right next to him, so if he wanted something, he’d just say it.
"Just wanted to let you know that I won’t be available for the next 4 years, because in 2 days I’ll be starting mandatory noble academy," said Flor.
"Academy?"
"Yes, it’s mandatory. Every year, noble children aged 18 start there. I’ll be learning how to fight, about magic, and other meaningless subjects. If we didn’t get Mana Crystals there daily to help students grow faster, I’d try to avoid going, because listening to lectures would be a waste of my time," explained Flor.
Then he went quiet—it looked like he was thinking about something. "Maybe I could get you two in as well, but the problem would be hiding the fact that you’re undeath," he said after a while.
Flain’s mind was struck by surprise—this was quite a big twist. If what Flor said was true, then Flain could learn a lot of new information about this world that he was missing, since up to now he’d only gotten it from either Itai or the system.
He would also probably grow much faster, because if he trained near Mana Crystals, he’d likely gain far more EXP—but he wasn’t sure about that, so he needed to ask the system.
The more he thought about it, the more he wanted to accept it. He didn’t see any problems with it—he could change his body to a human one using the Necklace of Deception. The only problem he saw was that he might accidentally scare some noble children, but in the end, he didn’t care.
An opportunity like this doesn’t come around every day. Flain would still like to explore the world and grow stronger in it, but this was practically a better option. He could explore the world whenever he wanted. He’d be a fool not to accept it.
"I accept. You don’t need to worry about my undeath appearance, I’ll handle that myself," said Flain.
"I figured. So we’ll be classmates—that’s very good," said Flor. His tone of voice didn’t change, even after hearing this news.
Flor almost always had the same tone of voice, which was very strange—it almost never changed, which seemed strongly inhuman. At least change that friendly tone a little, maybe a bit less friendly or more, anything.
The only two cases where Flor had a different tone were when Hakiru slammed Itai into a wall—then he had an angry demeanor. And the second case was when Itai told him through the Night Communicator that a really strong monster was after him—then he had a neutral tone. Otherwise, he had literally the exact same tone, not even a slight variation.
Of course, Flain had noticed this, along with Flor’s far too extensive knowledge. In any case, as Flain had already thought once—if it’s not a threat to him, there’s no reason to investigate what it really is.
"Alright, now I’ll explain the plan. I know a baron we’re quite good friends with, so with a bit of manipulation I’ll convince him to declare you as his 18th child—each child from a different wife. That way, you’ll be able to enroll in the academy. Anyway, Itai’s appearance will need to be changed because he’s already well known for his A-rank talent, and it’s clear to everyone that he’s not a noble’s child. Since you’ll handle your appearance yourself, our plan can be complete," explained Flor.
"And what if they find out I’m not a noble’s child?" asked Flain.
"Once you get into the academy, there’s no chance you’ll be exposed because of me. That baron would never betray me. You can only be exposed by your own mistake—if someone sees you as an undeath. Then you’re completely dead," said Flor in the same tone.
-----
Two days passed. Itai didn’t really feel like going, but in the end, he accepted. Itai dyed his hair black and grew a bit of a beard, even though it didn’t grow much.
All three of them—Flor, the others, and about a hundred noble children—were standing on the edge of the Imperial City.
All around, the chatter of future students could be heard. Many of them were excited, many were angry or just didn’t want to go. But almost all of them had one thing in common—they were children of nobles and had grown up in luxurious conditions where nearly everyone served them, so they were quite arrogant.
"What are we even waiting for?" asked Itai to Flor.
Flor looked at him...
