Chapter 15: [15] General assignment {1}

The next day, Zick was surprised by looking at the message posted in the [Alter] platform.

[All the first year students are required to gather at the main stadium - from your dear headmaster.]

Scavenging through his memories, Zick extracted today's memory.

'Ellen wins an award for being nominated by the magic tower.' If not due to noble courtesy, Zick wouldn't have wanted to attend it.

Gathering alongside the other diamond class cadets, Zick blankly stared at the podium.

The headmaster of [Alter] stood proudly on it, donning a luxurious suit.

He grandly announced seeing no other Cadets entering: "This is the first time in the history of Alter that a first year has received a nomination from the magic tower. Please welcome cadet Ellen onto the stage.

Hundreds of cheers and applause poured down like a rainstorm. There were many cadets who could be considered a fan of Ellen.

At the center of that brilliant spotlight. Ellen, the object of everyone's admiration, simply walked up the stairs with a proud demeanor.

Getting a magic tower nomination, what every wizard would aspire to gain their whole life - was a natural process for Ellen.

This confidence came from her years of excellence - not failing at any task corresponding to magic.

"Well done. Alter will always support you in every way possible."

The headmaster handed over the certificate to Ellen.

[Magic tower nominee]

"....."

Ellen stared at it quietly.

To be honest, she had learned more from the famous private tutors she had hired with Jolheim's money than from what she had learned at Alter. But the real value of Alter was not in learning, but in 'Networking' to Ellen.

Ellen took a glance at Zick and a few specific cadets.

"Congratulations, Ellen."

"Thank you."

Elise bowed her head at the headmaster's words.

'Tch, hypocrisy.' Zick knew exactly how much ambition Ellen possessed.

At the same time, he wanted to applaud Ellen's ability to maintain an image.

"The reporters are waiting." The headmaster reminded Ellen.

There were many scouts and reporters right below the stage.

Being nominated by magic tower would probably make the 9 o'clock news.

"Can you say a few words?"

"Yes, I suppose so."

Seeing that it was still going to continue, Zick turned into a statue.

That's when he felt a sudden nudge on his arm.

"The general assignment will start at 10:30 AM, so wanna go to the canteen?" Karlin asked with a fed expression, as if she was making a great concession.

Zick appeared thoughtful looking at Karlin, before exposing a smile.

"Your treat?"

Karlin rolled her eyes at Zick's word.

When Zick continued: "Sure let's go."

Gazing at Karlin, who kept exchanging glances with Ellen - Zick already knew the reason for the sudden invitation.

Ordering anything that seemed interesting, Zick devoured it with relish.

"...Were you a beggar in your past life?" Karlin asked seriously.

"....Maybe." Zick answered just as seriously.

Not surprisingly, Ellen arrived before them after a while too. Sitting beside Karlin with a smile.

It was not a secret that Karlin and Ellen were childhood friends. They were mostly together in their free time.

"What do you think about this assignment?" Ellen asked with a calm voice.

"Seems pretty easy."

Listening to Zick's carefree answer, Ellen shook her head as if to denounce his attitude.

"The academy's assignments are always not as they appear to be in reality. I have read the rules presented yesterday, it will definitely not be easy."

Ellen kept looking at Zick's face, calculating in her mind.

"Oh, are you hinting at wanting to join forces?" Zick exposed her face without further waiting.

'Is she really trying to calculate me? It's interesting looking at her childish antics.'

Ellen's face froze, before returning to normal.

"That's right." She felt depressed internally, feeling her thoughts to be seen by Zick, a person who was known as very straightforward.

"You worried that there is no rule stopping cadets from eliminating each other, right? Being besieged by dozens of fellow cadets seems problematic....But, I will still have to reject your offer."

Zick's composed voice tickled into Ellen's ears, making her look at him in a new light. She never knew the first ranker, Zick, had such analytic skills.

"Why?"

There didn't exist any apparent reason for Zick to refuse, in Ellen's eyes.

"It's a survival test, so moving in a group might be detrimental."

Making up a reason no one believed, Zick waved his hands as his farewell.

Looking at the stacks of plates before them, the two girls couldn't help but feel uncomfortable.

"Did he just eat and ditched us?" Karlin asked in a serious voice, not being able to accept the reality for a second.

"....We were the one who invited him, so I don't think so...?" Ellen was deep in thought too, not answering in her usual confidence.

.....

Today Zick didn't bring his space ring with him, aware that they would be confiscated before the assignment.

A fancy sword hung on his waist. Its sheath glittering alongside its metallic handle.

'Unlike before my regression, there is no news of me losing mana veins in this round. So their actions deviated little from the original...' Contemplating, Zick arrived at the gathering point for this assignment.

Most of the miscellaneous information was sent to the cadets through their mobile, keeping things always in order.

"Attention."

Seeing everyone present, the coordinator on the stage began speaking with a cold expression.

Khein was busy with his other classes, not allowing him to attend this assignment as an overlooker.

"The assignment will follow according to the rules provided. However, the board members overlooking this assignment have decided to make a slight modification."

Zick and Ellen looked at the scene indifferently, unlike the other horrified cadets.

"You will receive 3 bonus grade points for every cadet you eliminate. These points aren't calculated with the base 50 gps of the assignment. That's all, be prepared to be moved into an artificial dungeon within ten minutes."

"Place your storage ring...."

Zick didn't concentrate on the coordinator's voice anymore.

'System, show me my stats.'

[Name: Zick Dejlin

Destiny points: 11,050

Destiny rank: very rare (original: mediocre)

Original destiny: Dies by poisoning at the age of 15 - black rank fate. (Current fate: unknown)

Stats: [Strength: 15.4 (C-)] [Stamina: 14 (D+)] [Dexterity: 20.2 (B-)] [Mana: 19.5 (C+)] [Spiritual accomplishment: level 1 sword intent.]

Innate talent: [Sword aura (S)] [Mana magnetism (A)] ]

The biggest improvement in Zick's stats was definitely dexterity, which increased by around 4 points. It had increased thanks to his sword's intention's promotion to level one. All the other stats grew in one or two points, not legging behind.

'Even if my stats have stagnated at this level, I'm more than confident to dominate the whole first year.' Zick smiled with satisfaction.

Watching Aster in the distance, his eyes grew colder by the passing second.

"Don't you dare hide from me..."
