Chapter 39: Brother-In-Law?

The system didn’t answer Noa’s question.

He had no quest to complete, giving him nothing to look forward to—at least for now.

’Perhaps it’s too early for that,’ he thought and glanced at the man.

With broad shoulders, a tailored suit that screamed wealth, and a piercing, sharp gaze that made even staff members stiffen, Clara’s brother exuded a commanding presence.

For a moment, he completely ignored Noa and only eyed his sister.

Clara, however, didn’t seem happy to see him. "Alexander," she greeted flatly. "I wasn’t planning to come here. It just happened."

She was polite, yet distant.

Though the resemblance between the siblings was clear, Alexander carried himself with enough chill to freeze the entire room. At the same time, Clara’s presence was vibrant and magnetic.

"Still," the man continued, smiling for once. "I am glad to see you here. Especially... with company."

Finally, his gaze shifted to Noa.

The air thickened momentarily.

Silence decided to stretch longer than usual as the man scanned Noa from top to bottom.

He wore a casual jacket and pants, and though expensive, that alone was enough for judgment. That’s when Noa noticed something—a faint flicker of disdain under Alexander’s calm mask.

It wasn’t his first time being looked down on.

But coming from Clara’s brother, strangely, it felt heavier.

Yet he didn’t back down. If Alexander’s eyes shone with ice, his burned with fire. ’I guess this is the time to test some of my skills,’ he gleamed, his expression remaining steady and unbothered.

"Yep," he announced, standing closer to Clara while extending a hand to the man. "I am her company. It’s nice to meet you, brother-in-law."

That earned him a scoff from the man.

Clara, on the other hand, nearly choked. She wanted to say something but instead sent a warning glare at Noa.

He, however, ignored both of the siblings, not letting his composure crack.

Meanwhile, Alexander still accepted his handshake.

His grip was iron—a clear test of dominance.

Noa felt strength and pain at the same time, but he didn’t flinch.

According to the system, his strength attribute had been 5—way below average. He had no skills to boost his physical capabilities and no relics to make himself stronger.

But he had reached level 3.

It didn’t exactly make him powerful, nor did it give him free attribute points he could allocate however he wanted.

Still, his strength stat reached 7.

Now it was average at least, allowing him to tighten his grip and meet Alexander’s gaze with a teasing smile.

"You always had a strange taste, dear sister," the man spoke, his tone mocking. "First in your hobbies and now in your friends."

He didn’t believe Noa’s words.

Not once did he think the two would be in a serious relationship.

Though the siblings weren’t close, he knew his sister wouldn’t settle for someone mediocre.

Clara’s face hardened. "And you always had a knack for being an asshole," she said, and for a second, their stares clashed.

Noa watched the scene and chuckled.

His sudden reaction caused the man to release his hand and Clara to look at him in surprise.

’Asshole, huh?’ he repeated in his head. ’I may lack strength, but that’s not something I’m willing to lose.’

Alexander’s polished shoes clicked against the floor as he circled the counter. He saw what Noa wanted to purchase, and a faint smirk tugged at his lips. "You are buying this setup?"

Noa nodded and glanced at the price the staff member had counted before.

$10,880 was a price most people would hesitate to spend on gaming equipment, especially if it meant being left with less than $5,000. He didn’t.

"Yeah," Noa replied calmly.

"Good," Alexander nodded, his snicker widening. "But do you even know what you are buying? Or are you one of these kids who thinks expensive gear would make them better gamers?"

The employees of the store were still around.

They turned away, as if busily arranging some boxes.

Clara didn’t like her brother’s tone. "Alexander, that’s—"

But before she could finish, Noa interrupted her. "No, it’s fine," he said with a grin creeping onto his face. "I told you, I like games."

The man frowned again. "Games?"

He didn’t like Noa’s attitude.

"That’s what we are doing, right? You are going to keep using dumb questions, and I see how long it would take to embarrass you in your own game," he said casually.

Hearing this, Clara’s lips parted, just slightly, but enough to show her amusement.

Alexander didn’t seem like someone who would lose his composure like that. Yet Noa saw how his right brow twitched. ’Got you, bitch.’

The man sighed as well. "You think you are funny, huh?"

Noa shook his head. "Not really." He looked and sounded serious. "But you are helping. Thanks for that, by the way. I heard I need to make a woman laugh to charm her. Think it will work?"

Something vanished from Alexander’s face.

His jaw tightened, and the polite yet mocking smile was replaced by obvious disdain.

"Do you know who you are talking to, kid?"

Clara stood still, unsure how to react. Part of her wanted to step in, but she also wanted to see how the situation would unfold.

For once in her life, she didn’t know who would win this fight.

Normally, if someone dared to go against him, they would be escorted out of the store, but if he were in a foul mood, someone like Noa would be punished heavily.

Alexander had money, power, and connections even she would be envious of.

If he decided to make someone’s life miserable in Inkstone City, only a few could stand against his wishes.

Either Noa didn’t know that, or he was a fool.

He then suddenly proceeded to prove that he was both of them.

"Honestly, I don’t really care who you are. The only reason I am entertaining you is that you are my MILF’s brother," he paused, looked at Clara apologetically, and corrected himself. "Oh, wait. That came out wrong. I meant to say my... wife."

The woman was already used to his unusual humor.

That’s why she was the only one in the room who laughed.

The same thing couldn’t be said about Alexander as he stepped closer to Noa, bridging the gap between them.

’Is he going to hit me?’ Noa thought.

Strangely enough, he wasn’t afraid. He had already escaped from angry villagers once.

Just then—

A new system message caught his attention.
