When Uriel realized his phone was turned off by the cryptid’s field of disruption it was already too late. A bald humanoid creature with protruding fangs and long claws attacked him from behind causing a gashing wound that felt as though a thousand needles were being jabbed on his skin. The pain was so terrible it rendered him unable to think straight and he did what he thought would give him the best chance to survive, he activated Dash. He then summoned his revolver and opened fire against the cryptid, only to realize the bullets bounced off its skin and some of the shrapnel hit him in the face effectively blinding him.

Then, Uriel tried to focus on his mystical sense, but that proved to be yet another mistake because the cryptid in front of him was of the horror rank.

Now he was blinded, in seething pain and completely overwhelmed by the oppressing aura the cryptid emitted. Tears ran down his face, but they only made his wounds hurt even more.

While the skill did allow him to move faster, his perception of time also changed and it made the pain last longer than it should have and Uriel was being cornered into activating Water warlock’s blessing, but that was something he wanted to avoid at all costs.

Ever since Nika told him he might have been possessed by Water warlock, he had been reluctant to use his power, at least until he learned more about possessions.

Unable to see the cryptid, he received yet another slash, only this time it was on his front. The diagonal wound was millimiters close to his heart and blood spurt all over the place in slow motion.

’At this rate it won’t matter if I want to activate the blessing or not, I might not make it alive.’ He inwardly thought.

Fortunately, he was able to enter his trait and thanks to the Dash skill being active it took but a fraction of a second for him to think of a solution.

"Get me out of here!" He shouted at the recently summoned Jaguar spirit and then he felt a powerful tug on the back of his neck, accompanied by the familiar sensation of moving at a fast speed. "Good boy." He said while blindly patting on the jaguar spirit’s fur.

Once they were at a safe distance, the jaguar spirit dropped him on the ground and Uriel was able to recover from his blindness on a matter of minutes, though both the slashing wounds he received remained the same because they were dripping with black goo.

"This looks like the same thing the vampires... Oh! It was a horror rank Nosferatu!" Uriel exclaimed looking at the jaguar spirit. Even if it was a summoned creature he still felt better by speaking to it, though his happiness lasted for only a short period because the cryptid was dying.

There was a deep wound across the side of the cryptid and it too was dripping with the same black substance, but the cryptid was in much worse condition than Uriel.

"This is strange, why didn’t it follow us and how come my wounds are superficial but the jaguar’s are so deep." If that thing had the power to defeat the jaguar with a single hit, then it was more than obvious that it could have easily killed Uriel but chose not to.

It may have seemed cruel to think about those matters while his faithful jaguar spirit laid next to him at death’s door, but in order to find a solution he needed to understand the cause first.

"If it wanted me alive, it must have been because of my blood, but it had no use for the jaguar’s blood. This confirms it’s a vampire, this means...." Uriel started muttering to himself theorizing about the cryptid’s nature as an undead creature and then he reached a conclusion. "This liquid is it’s saliva and it’s what they use to turn corpses into vampires.

Then, because it’s an undead, I won’t be able to heal from this until the wound until the foreign liquid is removed."

It may have seemed farfetched, but Uriel was aware of the fact that only corpses that had been bitten while still alive would become nosferatu. Uriel didn’t want to know if the jaguar spirit would become a nosferatu too, just the thought of it sent shivers down his spine but the only way he could think to prevent it was to keep the jaguar spirit alive, which sent him back to ground zero.

"This is going to hurt." He said in anticipation of the pain he would need to endure after poking at his own wound with his pocket knife to carve out all the black goo. He gritted his teeth and endured the pain, though as soon as he took a portion of it out the wound started closing by itself and the black goo was expelled, causing the pain from his front wound to dissipate immediately.

Now that he knew it worked, he did the same thing for the jaguar and then he cancelled the summon. The pained feline turned into the small clay figurine like usual, though it was cracked and looked extremely weathered. He then tried to summon it again, just to see if it remained wounded, but he received a system notice instead.

[System Notice] Not enough substance to summon the creature.

"Good, it’s not dead." That brought him as much relief as it worried him. The only way he knew to repair the clay figurine was to crush flux orbs, but the only flux orb available to him was still inside of a horror rank cryptid. "I’m not going to fight that thing any time soon."

Now that he was able to heal from the worst wound, Uriel was able to go back to his camp, only now he was wary of the presence of cryptids because of his last encounter. Then it hit him, it happened near an orichalcum vein that was close to the shade area created by a floating island and the vampire didn’t follow after him, which meant two things.

First, orichalcum veins were most likely in those areas and second, it was likely that those dark areas are filled with cryptids.

"They’re weak to sunlight!"
