'We're expecting another invasion.'

Those few simple words lit up the whole Border Patrol Office.

The idea that they might be facing yet another invasion caused all of the relevant staff to get their hands on everything they possibly could. The surveillance was working overtime, soldiers were double-checking the security measures, and staff were moving mountains just to get things into their proper places and order.

Cedric himself was also on surveillance duty. He was confirming if the suspicion was sound and not a false alarm.

"The general Void Density levels have reached level 5 across the board. We also have confirmed vigorous movement of Void Creatures at the edge of our surveillance area. Based on their movements, we estimate that they're gathering in one place, which is at the Heart of the Void," one of the staff reported.

"The movement of the Void Creatures was also accompanied by a strong aggressive intent, one of the few key factors as to why we came to expect this. Also, the movement of the void itself has been turbulent. It has shown numerous signs of a Void Shift, but each time we expected it to happen, it didn't. It's like something was stopping it from happening for some reason."

Cedric remained silent, but inwardly he thought, 'Well, it has been five years since the last Void Shift, so that would make sense. But it's not happening? Why is that? Is it because of the Void Prince? Could he be planning on doing something else? '

'I can't imagine there being another entity that could just stop the Void Shift from happening other than the Void Prince or the Void's Consciousness itself.'

Cedric's golden eyes gazed across the rows of information available in front of him, trying to locate any signs of inconsistencies or missed details; however, he couldn't spot anything.

'There's no way it's our equipment that's stopping the Void Shift from happening. They are nowhere near powerful enough to have that kind of influence. Besides, they are created to anchor to the location, not the land itself. We have calibrated each piece of equipment multiple times, and there were no mistakes there.'

'Which returns us to square one...why is the Void Shift not happening? '

'Ugh, well...I can't really confirm anything since I didn't see this coming. We might as well blame it on the confusing nature of the void.'

Since the assumption was sound that the signs were there, Cedric didn't oppose the combat readiness protocol. Sure, it would be better if they had more proof that an invasion was coming. Alas, this was the best they could do for now.

Cedric then felt a hand pressing on his shoulders. He looked back and saw Silas and Igor looking at him. With a gentle smile, the Mystic Fae Chancellor said:

"You have to rest while you still can. You just came out of an exhausting ordeal; you shouldn't be stressing out this much."

Cedric gave him a wry smile and replied, "I can't. This place needs me."

"It won't...for a while at least," Igor stated, giving him a reprimanding look. "Trust in them; they can manage without you for a bit."

"You don't feel comfortable not being involved, yes, I can understand that, but we also can't have you collapsing in the middle of the invasion when we need you the most. So while you still can, get some rest."

Cedric took a deep breath and finally relented. He couldn't lie after all; he was indeed spent.

He sure made his breakthrough look easy, but in reality, it wasn't. It has demanded a lot out of him, mentally, physically, and spiritually. He knows that he needed to rest, but the sudden suspicion of the invasion made him unable to do so.

If these two didn't come forward to reassure him that this place isn't going to fall apart while he's resting, he'd probably run himself ragged. Igor was right; they can't have him collapsing when they need him the most, so he has to rest while he still can.

After leaving some last-minute instructions for his men and securing the remaining participants of the Ancient Chaos Project, Cedric returned to his residence to rest.

**

In Cedric's absence, the whole Border Patrol Office remained in motion. All hands on deck because up until now, they still have no idea how big of an army they're about to face.

Well...technically, there's actually no guarantee that the army would even come since so far, this is all just an assumption, but these people don't have to know that now. It wouldn't be too late to inform them later anyway.

It has to be said that everybody who successfully became an Ancient Chaos Path practitioner also became key figures in this defense. That's because they have the innate capabilities to remember how Cedric's work works. And since the guardian camps pretty much rely on Cedric's innovations to improve their survival chances, then these people should be respected just as much as Cedric.

Contrary to their beliefs, though, those who transitioned to the Ancient Chaos Path didn't think that they're too special. They don't carry that arrogance or overconfidence. They revered Cedric just as much as everybody else does because in their eyes, he's the real deal.

They weren't the ones who invented the Void Conversion Runic Formation. And even if they were fortunate enough to be where they are right now, there's no way they could've invented something this miraculous...at least not this early.

Additionally, they are entrusted by Cedric to contribute to the realm by doing what they can while they're in service. Even though they technically didn't owe anything to him, they still feel immensely indebted to Cedric for guiding them into this path. Without him, they'd all still be toiling around in the alliance, living pathetically and hopelessly.

This was all he ever asked of them, and knowing that this was the best way to repay him for what he did for them, how could they not do so? That's why none of them resisted the stipulations on the contract. Besides, Cedric's more than a director to them. He's an inspiration and their idol. All of the glory and respect they're receiving came from him; that much they understood.

WHEW!!

The sirens rang all over the camp, alerting every single soldier within. The comms then crackled to activity, and they heard:

"Attention to all! Another invasion is upon us. We have eyes on a minimum of 20 million armies of Void Creatures surrounding us from all sides. Everybody is advised to make themselves useful because within 72 hours, we are expecting this army to start poking holes into our realm."

The atmosphere within the camp instantly went alight. The veterans or the tenured immediately went into motion. In fact, most of them were already moving even before the first word in the announcement was uttered.

The noobs, on the other hand, especially those who came from the Societal Office who were forced to come due to public outrage, felt panicked, running around like headless chickens fleeing from the slaughterhouse.

Their team leaders and superiors took out their whips to shepherd them into their proper places. Most of them expected a litany of curses and humiliating words, but none of it came. They were just ordered to pick themselves up and make themselves useful in this situation.

This was the moment they realized just how heavy their duties were. This was also the moment when these people witnessed the solidarity of this entire army.

These people stare directly into the void and tell it to fuck off even if it costs them their lives. This was the moment they realized how little their personal lives mattered compared to the duty of the Border Patrol Guardians.

Fwooosh!!

A cold breeze of air descended into the camp. There was no presence that came after it, but everybody could tell where it was coming from. And with it, any doubts of the invasion happening practically vanished because that cold breeze pretty much confirmed that they are, indeed, coming.

72 hours to have everything prepared for the chaos doesn't seem enough. And it isn't. But fortunately, the assumption already had a few people moving things earlier, which shortened the preparation time greatly now that the invasion was pretty much confirmed.

Still, 20 million Void Creatures at minimum? That's a mind-boggling number. And they didn't even dare to think that their army being scattered around the realm was a disadvantage. Nobody could be so sure of it given how strange the void is by nature.

"Has anybody seen traces of the Void Prince?" A voice sounded throughout the surveillance room.

"Not yet, sir. We wouldn't discount his presence, though. We're just assuming that he's hanging at the far back; that's why our surveillance hasn't spotted him yet."

"Very well. Continue monitoring the army. If they so much as swerve from their expected route, we must know it. Am I clear?"

"Yes, sir!"

"Sir, the Void Density levels just spiked all of a sudden. It went from level 6 to level 10 in a snap."

"What!?"
