Chapter 201: Change of air

"In the heavens, there is a rule. Everytime one of the main gods has a descendant who is going to take over their throne after them, and an auspicious blessing ceremony is arranged for the child. The five main gods, come by themselves or they send someone to represent them to bless the child with their powers,’’ King Rezeph said.

Luciana, having already read about it in the scriptures when she was young remained unfazed because there was something else that was niggling her chest at the moment.

Jeremiah who has known about the heavenly realm and gods ever since he was chosen as the heir apparent was calm as well compared to Marcus Norwell and Lucian Norwell who seemed confused and slightly lost.

Esme on the other hand did not think it had anything to do with her. She had heard of the heavenly realm a few times, and the main gods too but in the end, it had nothing to do with her.

Someone can give her the memories that she had lost and she will still be content for the rest of her life.

Not having her memories did not bother her as much as the voices in her head did.

When she saw roses, her heart ached.

When the sky was grey and stormy, her heart ached.

When she looked at the King’s throne, she felt sad.

When she saw her own reflection, her heart ached.

Everything she came across made her heart ache and every voice in her head made her feel like she was going to lose her sanity.

Caring about others wasn’t going to be her primacy when she could not find a way to care for herself.

King Rezeph raised his hand and snapped his fingers, an invitation appeared in his hand, ’’The dark castle has announced the presence of a new Prince, and a new heir to God Atlas hence all the main gods are invited to bless the Prince to purify his powers.’’

The color drained from the faces of Marcus Norwell and Lucian Norwell. From the conversation they overheard between Marilyn and Aleister a year ago in Visteria, the Dark Castle already had a Prince, Cardan, who was Marilyn’s son.

Then, the other Prince... There was no way. That man died right in front of their eyes.

The more he thought about it, the calmer Marcus Norwell became. Right, it should be the child of some mistress. If the heavenly realm was anything like their kingdom then the blessing ceremony will be held only when the child is born.

Luciana on the other hand was intrigued by the announcement. A new Prince? Is he—

She still remembered Cardan’s words.

’When the opportunity arises, bring Esme to the heavenly realm with you.’

’How can we go there? Moreover, why would there even be such an opportunity?’ she remembered asking the man.

To which, he replied, ’When there is an opportunity, you just need to grab it before anyone else does.’

Luciana could not sleep the whole night while thinking about it. On one hand, if she went against Cardan, he might choose someone else to do it for him and that will endanger Esme further.

But if she took Esme there as he wanted, then Esme might be in danger because of that crazy bitch mother of his who unreasonably hated half of the world. Not to mention that Esme had attacked her last time in the Daven Castle and it had looked like Marilyn was affected by Esme’s powers because she disappeared soon after. If she was still holding a grudge against Esme even after Aleister’s death... No...

’’Your Majesty, forgive me for intruding,’’ Luciana stepped forward as she curtsied to the King, ’’But this has never happened before. The heavenly realm never sent any invitation and I doubt they did not have any Princes before,’’ After all, Cardan was a Prince too, ’’Does that means they never held a blessing ceremony or...’’ her voice trailed off.

’’That’s right. The God of Sea was banished from heaven because he broke the rules. Hence, he was never involved in any of the ceremonies before this despite being one of the five main gods.’’

Esme tilted her head to the side. Weird. She was hearing all this for the first time yet it sounded familiar.

She tugged at her hair.

’’Are you hurt anywhere, my dear?" Rezeph’s attention shifted to Esme, a deep frown settling between his brows, ’’Is it because they woke you up early? I just knew I should have shelved this discussion to the evening,’’ he pushed himself to his feet, ’’Go back to your room and sleep some more. We can talk about this later—’’

’’Your Majesty,’’ Esme’s lips twitched as she cut him off under the stunned gazes of the Norwell Family members. He was the king. Why was he acting this way in front of his subjects?

She cleared her throat, ’’If our God was banished and they never sent invitations for any of the ceremonies then what changed now?’’ she asked instead, trying to shift his attention from her.

The King eyed her suspiciously to make sure she was not in pain before he sat back on his throne while crumpling the invitation in his hand as he threw it aside casually, ’’Oh, from what the little birdies told me, the previous heir of the Dark Castle does not possess pure divine powers,’’ King Rezeph shook his head, ’’His mother, the daughter of Witch Goddess seemed to have found a way to treat her son but it seems impossible. And the members of the night court believe that it went wrong with the Prince because of the incomplete blessing ceremony where they did not invite God Zephyr and the child was only blessed by four main gods’ power including his father.’’

The Prince that he was talking about should be Cardan... Luciana thought. If Cardan wanted to purify his powers, then what did he want from Esme? Was it a one-sided obsession or did he want to take revenge on Aleister by using Esme?

But Aleister was dead and no matter how she thought about it, it was not making any sense.

Then again, Cardan has always been interested in knowing about Esme.

"But where is our God?" Esme asked softly as she looked around. She has heard countless mentions of God Zephyr but she had yet to see the man.

’’No has seen him in decades,’’ Luciana approached Esme as she whispered.

’’He might be dead, for all we care,’’ King Rezeph casually said.

’’A god...can die?" Esme contemplated.

’’When he exhausts his powers or kills himself, yes. Or when the other gods conspire to throw him to his death, yes. When he sacrifices his powers and becomes a mortal, yes,’’ Rezeph sounded uninterested in it but his gaze kept lingering on Esme, "There are many instances when a god can destruct himself too."

Esme narrowed her eyes. The foxy smirk on his face was telling her that he had no good intentions, ’’I... should leave. The heir apparent is here and so are the Norwell Family members. I don’t think I can contribute much...’’ she started backing away.

’’Oh dear, you can contribute a lot,’’ Rezeph said, ’’Because you will be representing our God and going there to the ceremony.’’

Blood drained from Esme’s face, ’’I am not going,’’ she said without a hitch, ignoring the stunned looks of everyone present, ’’I don’t want to go,’’ she repeated.

Rezeph looked at her with an unwavering gaze which told her that he was not going to take back his words, ’’You are bored here. The change of air should be good for you,’’ the man said casually.

Esme bit her bottom lips, ’’You can send me to some other land for the change of air. I don’t want to go up to heaven to feel the change...’’ she panicked inwardly.

She was used to living here yet this place closed in her at times. What if the same thing happened there too? And there will be no familiar faces for her to seek comfort.

No. No. No.

This was so wrong.

"I can send someone to accompany you,’’ Rezeph looked around the quiet courtroom, his gaze stopping at Jeremiah, ’’You can’t go since you have duties here.’’

Jeremiah nodded calmly.
