Chapter 202: Heavenly realm

Rezeph turned his head towards Lucian.

’’Your Majesty,’’ Luciana stepped forward before the King had a chance to speak to Lucian, ’’I’d like to go with Esme.’’

Lucian narrowed his eyes at his sister, ’’It’s not a decision for you to make,’’ Chances like this were rare and while there were risks, he did not mind.

Luciana avoided his gaze, ’’My brother and Esme are not close so they won’t be able to communicate if the other person was heaving their last breath. And I am more powerful than my brother, hence more suitable to accompany Esme on this journey.’’

Lucian gritted his teeth. She always had to provoke him like this.

’’Lady Norwell, it is then,’’ Rezeph turned to look at Esme, ’’Since you are leaving tonight through the portal, you should get started with the preparations. You might have to live there for three days.’’

There was a portal nearby? Everyone except Luciana was stunned.

Esme, however, did not bother with it.

Just like that, her fate was sealed without anyone asking her if she wanted to do this or not.

It was not that much of a big thing to care about but in her current condition, she could not even sleep properly in her own bed. Living in some unknown place for two-three days, she would be thankful if she came back alive.

But what if the people were not as welcoming there?

Wordlessly, she turned around and walked out of the courtroom.

’’Your Majesty, how can she...’’ Marcus gulped the rest of his words when the King narrowed his eyes.

Without saying another word, Rezeph pushed himself to his feet.

He raised his hand and the crumpled invitation flew to his grasp. Holding it in his hands, he looked at it for one last time before walking out of the courtroom.

Leo followed the King out of the courtroom.

’’Take care of her,’’ Jeremiah said to Luciana before he left.

Luciana nodded, knowing very well how much the man adored Esme.

’’Keep an eye on her and the situation there. I am going to know every detail from you,’’ her father spoke with a dangerous glint in his eyes while her brother glared at her for snatching his opportunity to outshine her.

Once they were gone and Luciana was alone in the courtroom, she felt the weight of her decision on her shoulder.

A gasp escaped her mouth. Little did these people know that if it was in her control, then she would never have let Esme go there in the first place. But she knew Cardan, that devil would find a way to get what he wanted hence, she stuck to Esme’s side.

And they were both now going to step into the devil’s lair.

She would stab his eyes if he approached Esme with evil intentions. That’s the least she could do to make up to the woman for whatever happened in the past.

...

Esme slumped on the bed as soon as she was back inside her room.

Hearing the sound of approaching footsteps, she pulled the sheets up to her head and closed her eyes.

There was a sound of clearing of the throat before the man inside her room spoke up, ’’This comb looks pretty. I am wondering if I should keep this—’’

’’Put it down,’’ Esme shoved the sheets aside as she bolted out of the bed, ’’That’s mine,’’ she tried to grab the comb from the King’s hand but the man raised it in the air, his attention shifted to painting, ’’Pretty blue eyes. As far as I remember, Jeremiah has green eyes. Is this adultery?"

Esme gasped, ’’How is art adultery?" she skipped the part about her dreaming about this pair of eyes and almost being obsessed. It would indeed sound like adultery, ’’Give me back my comb. I nearly sold myself to get my hand on this,’’ she said, exasperated.

She did not know why everyone was after her comb. Leo was circling around it since he came back to the room last night and spotted it in front of the mirror.

And now the King.

Rezeph’s face darkened, ’’What do you mean by sold yourself?"

Even though she was upset at him, Esme explained the situation with the comb and how it was so expensive that she nearly could not get it.

’’Do you remember the face of the shop owner?"

’’Yes but—’’

’’I’ll get him sentenced for his crime.’’

’’About getting goods from humans? I should not have told you that,’’ Esme shook her head helplessly.

’’No, about troubling you,’’ Rezeph said.

Esme was stunned for a moment before she released a breath, ’’I don’t even know why you are so kind to me.’’

The man glanced at her quietly.

’’I discovered a lot of things yesterday and I want to ask you too... Have you ever lied to me about anything?"

"Not until now,’’ Rezeph said, without asking her what things she was talking about.

’’Do you know about my past? About who I was before I moved into this castle as Jeremiah’s fiancee?"

’’No.’’

’’Was that a lie?" Esme examined his expressions.

’’I am the King. I can’t keep note of every living creature under the sea when I have a kingdom to rule.’’

Esme looked at him quietly, ’’Before I came here, I must just be another living creature to you,’’ she nodded.

’’Forget about before, treasure,’’ The man placed his hand on her head, ’’Now is all you get to focus on. You are going to the heavenly realm. How does that make you feel?"

’’Like I cannot stomach whatever food I eat there,’’ Esme whispered, looking at him pleadingly as he ruffled her hair, ’’Can I not go?"

Rezeph laughed, ’’You must.’’

Esme stepped back from him as her lips formed a small pout. Her gaze shifted to Leo who was sitting on the bed, ’’I will take him with me,’’ she looked at the King stubbornly, letting the man know that she will not take ’No’ for an answer.

He smiled, ’’I can allow that.’’

...

At night time.

Deep inside the sea, the mysterious ancient looking doors opened as soon as the key was pressed inside the rusty lock.

The King had earlier told them that there was a portal behind the door.

Esme remembered that the shop owner who sold the comb to her spoke something about this door. The mers worship this place because they believe that their God used to live here before his disappearance and this place still contains his powers.

Esme did not know about the former but the latter seemed to be true. She could feel a rush of energy inside her body as she stood in front of the door.

She hugged Leo, ’’Are you fine?" she asked him, swaying her tail back and forth.

The little thing looked at her with his golden eyes going wide, and his white fur moved in the water, causing Esme to chuckle.
