Holen felt his blood boil when he saw Athan’s face. His mind flashed back to his childhood—a time when life was simple for a young boy in the northern lands. He would go out with his father to hunt wild animals and return home to chop wood for the fireplace.

At that time, he absolutely despised chopping wood in the snow as night began to fall because it meant enduring the freezing cold afterward.

He understood that his father assigned him this task simply because he, too, disliked it. But what option did he have? He was just a kid, and his father was one of the best hunters in the village. So he sucked it up and chopped the wood.

However one day, his life changed forever. He and his father came back to the village from their hunt and saw the village in flames. He ran to their house and found that Holen’s mom was already dead.

Slide in the throat with a knife.

To this day, Holen still remembers the hunting face of his mother. The shock right before her death was present in her eyes. The fire that burned their house couldn’t measure up to the rage his father was feeling at that moment.

Young Holen was sent away by his father, who told him to flee this place. Holen wanted to help his father, but the old man was in no mood to allow it. That was the last moment he saw his father alive.

All that emotion came back to him when he saw Athan’s face. Because despite his father’s warning young Holen stuck around the skirt of the village. Hoping to see his father return to him. However, the only guy that he saw was Athan, bloodied by all the people he killed.

At that moment, Holen got scared and ran away to the village on the other side of the mountain to seek him out, as his father had assigned him to do. But by that point, no one was left alive in his village.

He was not permitted to look at his father but from how the others looked he knew it was bad. At that age, it would have traumatized him forever, just like his mother’s body. That day he felt like he dried all day long.

He cried until tears would not come out of his eyes anymore. However, when his tears were empty, he was filled with something else instead—a rage that burned even brighter than the sun itself.

At least at the beginning of his journey, he was filled with rage. However, as time went on and he matured, he began to feel increasingly cold. This change wasn’t due to forgetting his anger; rather, he had transformed that anger into his motivation.

And finally, he became a detective with impressive connections. His name was everywhere and his eyes covered the whole capital. Only then did he find Athan.

"Holen, we should get...."

"Kill him" Holen repeated his command, this time even colder than before. His voice was filled with emotions he had over the years. Sometimes he even questioned his worth when pursuing this guy, however, he got the answer when he laid his eyes upon the terrible being in front of him.

All those years of searching and anger. Finally, he was about to get the revenge that he sought, all of his sacrifice would not be for naught.

Oven glanced at Holen and sensed that something was off. The detective typically had two modes. The serious mode he used when speaking to a long-time friend and the friendly mode he employed with customers or business partners. However, this was neither; it was something completely unfamiliar to Oven.

"But...."

Holen didn’t wait for Oven’s words and unshelved the sword beside the knight’s waist and pointed it at the Athan.

"What so funny about this?"

The detective asked, his voice filled with anger.

"I was imagining the look you’d give me when I died."

"Let me see how immortal you are" Hoeln looked at the guy like he was insane. No, maybe the guy was insane. There were at least ten years and other mysteries that he found about Athan, however, he was about to test it now for the first time.

Athan’s eyes abruptly change from amused to surprised. Not many people knew of his immortality in this day and age, especially when he was lying low for decades. He was about to say something when Holen cut it short by decapitating the man.

Oven turned to Kanku

"Close your eyes!" The kid quickly followed the adult order but he already caught a glimpse of the gruesome Holen. The calm detective felt rather scary in his eyes.

Holen looked intensely at the immortal’s body. He waited for the guy to be resurrected and a second later his wish came true. The head of Athan quickly reattached itself to the neck again forming a perfect body of the immortal.

Oven’s eyes widened in surprise as he got off Athan a bit. He was truly scared of what Athan was. What kind of mystic monster could this be? He had never seen a more bizarre thing in his life, even the skeleton looked rather tame because it didn’t look disgusting like the sight of flesh connecting together.

"What are you?"

"I don’t know... maybe an immortal?" Athan sat back up as if nothing happened and looked at Holen "How did you know about me"

"Blood snow"

"One of the victims?" Athan let out a slight laugh "That event creates more variables than I expected. Never knew I would encounter two people in a short amount of time."

"Could you die?"

"hum... Could I?" Athan giggled as Holen asked him "If what you seek was my death when we might as well be in the same boat"

"....?" Holen eyes brows knitted together.

"If you refer to me as immortal then you should have dug all my info up, right? Living this long was not a good idea. A human was not supposed to live for this long." Athan said with a carefree expression. However, on the opposite end, Holen was stunned by Athan’s goal.

"You want to die?"

"I couldn’t, that’s why I’m seeking it. It’s the hard thing that is worth pursuing no?"

Holen’s thoughts were racing, and this changed everything for him. Previously, he had been focused on avenging his family by pursuing Athan’s death, believing it was right for Athan to experience the same pain he had felt. However, he now realized that the immortal man simply wanted to die. This could be a ploy to dissuade Holen from carrying out his intention to kill him by saying that he wanted to die.

The voice that Athan made, was the same as his years ago. It’s a voice filled with hollowness and nothingness. And ever since his family was killed there was nothing that could fill his hole. He felt the same way when he heard Athan’s words.

Holen gritted his teeth. For all his life he had pursued Atahn’s death. He wanted to see it through however, on the other hand, Holen wanted the guy to feel the pain of losing a family. Holen doubted that this guy had a family so he ought to do the next best thing.

Kept him alive...

In a twisted way, this would prolong the guy’s suffering.

"The reason you’re here was to kill yourself?"

"Precisely" Athan looked at the glass dome above them. There the letter of explosion started to gather itself around the ring. Holen and Oven watched the spectacle and couldn’t get their eyes off it.

At that moment the string that held the black-box in the air started snapping one by one. The black string started turning white and vanished into the air. All of them disappeared in a matter of seconds before all of it was no longer holding the black box.

Then the box became clearer and clearer as it floated down to the center of the room. Right in front of Atahn who’s standing there waiting for it.

Inside the clear box was a long stick that had a skull at the other end of it. A black gem gleaned atop the skull head.

"This thing is called the death scepter, you could guess what it could do right?"

"Ge that thing!"

Holen yelled out, with his mind made up about keeping Athan alive or more suffering in place, he ought to stop it.

"Don’t you want to kill him?"

"He realized that keeping me alive would yield much better suffering for me. Which he isn’t wrong"

"Wait, wasn’t your goal to kill this guy?" Oven said looking at the detective.

"Ask later! Steal that thing"

Holen also made a move, to close the distance. With two against one, they would win the scepter of death over. Oven felt a bit conflicted but ultimately followed Holen’s order. Seeing the two quickly dashed to the scepter only made Athan smile.

"You’re forgetting someone here"

Grey vines crept in from the back of Oven and Holen.
