Chapter 225: Away

"She’s thirsting for revenge, Serena," Sidney said, his tone heavy with concern.

Serena shrugged casually, her expression calm. "So? Why are you telling me this? It’s not like she’ll listen to me if I ask her not to take revenge. She isn’t exactly known for being agreeable. Besides, I understand where she’s coming from. Didn’t I do everything for the same reason? Just because her revenge is misplaced doesn’t mean I’ll blame her for wanting it."

Sidney sighed, running a hand through his hair. "But it’s a vicious circle, Serena. Someone has to break it, or it’ll just keep repeating."

Serena’s lips curved into a faint, bitter smile as she shrugged again. "It is what it is."

Sidney watched her for a moment, searching her face for any trace of doubt or hesitation. When he didn’t find any, he spoke carefully. "I’m going to take Ava away. Sofia has already been sent to a boarding school since Lydia refuses to keep her anymore. Sofia will have the counselling she needs there. I just need to know one thing. Are you really going to manage everything without taking it out on others? Will Ava and the others still have their inheritances when the time comes?"

Of course. Asking me that question is an insult, Sidney Pierce. The only reason I even got involved in this mess was because I was dragged into it. When the time comes, they will all receive what they’re entitled to. But let me warn you—if Ava does anything to harm me or interfere with my interests, I won’t sit back and take it. If you plan to take her away, make sure she gives up her plans. If she doesn’t, be prepared for the consequences."

Sidney nodded slowly, the weight of her warning clear. He didn’t doubt her resolve for a second. "Understood." But then his gaze hardened and he reminded her," You owe me a favour, Rena."

Serena scoffed, crossing her arms. "I’m well aware of that, Sidney. If you want something, just say it already."

He watched her carefully, his eyes narrowing slightly as if weighing his next words. "Stay away from Aiden," he said finally before standing up, ready to leave.

Serena stared at him. So he was going to leave her with this ’favour request’? Impossible.

Just as he would have walked out, she tilted her head and spoke the word on her mind," Impossible."

Sidney froze, his hand on the doorjamb. Slowly, he turned to face her, his expression taut with disbelief. "What do you mean, impossible?"

"I mean exactly what I said. I won’t stay away from Aiden." Serena answered unconcerned about all this

Sidney stepped back toward her, his movements sharp, his frustration bubbling just beneath the surface. "But you’re divorced," he said, his voice rising slightly. "And he hates you. Why not stay away? Can’t you do that much for me? You asked for my help to convince Ava to declare Uncle Matthew as insane and I helped you without question and without a word or protest, and now you won’t even repay it?"

Serena shrugged, her expression unchanged. "Any favor but this. Also, if he hated me it would have been because of you."

"Why?" Sidney demanded, his hands clenched at his sides. "Why is this the one thing you won’t do? What’s so special about him?"

Serena raised an eyebrow, studying him for a long moment. Then, instead of answering, she asked, "Why are you with Ava?"

Sidney blinked, caught off guard by the shift in the conversation. "What does that have to do with anything?" ƒгeeweɓn૦vel.com

"Answer the question," Serena pressed, her voice quiet but firm. "Why are you with her? It’s not love. We both know that."

Sidney stiffened, his jaw tightening. "Ava was there for me when no one else was," he said at last, his tone clipped. "Not even you."

Serena didn’t flinch at his words as he would have expected from the jab, though her eyes darkened slightly and she answered sweetly, "Aiden was there for me when no one else was. Not even you."

"This is different," he said after a long pause, "I’m asking you to do this because it’s for the best. There are things you don’t understand. You don’t know."

"No," Serena said firmly. "You’re asking because it’s what you want. That’s not the same thing. As for what I don’t know? I know things more than you do. Like you and him are half brothers."

Sidney exhaled sharply, running a hand through his hair. "How long have you known?"

"Since I returned. There are no secrets between him and me."

Sidney scoffed at that. "I wouldn’t be so sure of that." He spoke bitterly but then later added in a softer tone," Rena. I know we can never be together. But if you go back to Aidne, then we will always be on the opposite sides. Does it really have to be like that?"

"Somethings are just meant to be Sidney. We were meant to be friends only for a while. Let’s leave everything behind and remember good times with each other. As for the future, no one can know what is going to happen."

He stared at her," Do you love him? Is that why you are intent on going back to him?"

Of course, Serena was not going to answer that. She had not yet confessed her love to even Aiden so why should she tell Sidney that? "It is really none of your business, Sidney."

He took a step back, his face hardening once more. "Fine," he said, his voice cold. "I’ll hold you to that favor when the time comes. Don’t forget that, Serena."

"I won’t," Serena said calmly, watching as he turned away.

Sidney reached the door but stopped again, glancing back at her. For a moment, it looked like he might say something else, but instead, he shook his head and left without another word.

Serena leaned back in her chair, her eyes drifting toward the door as it closed behind him. Finally, this Chapter of her life was over for good.
