Chapter 244: Disappointment

Kim studied her reflection in the mirror, a confident smile tugging at her lips. Excitement coursed through her, though she tried to temper it. She hadn’t planned on staying overnight, but she was nothing if not adaptable. The events of last night had been disappointing, though. After some subtle but persistent prying, she had discovered that Aiden had his own private wing in the house, complete with a separate entrance to ensure his privacy. Unfortunately for her, she hadn’t been able to locate that elusive entry point. If she had, her plans might have already borne fruit and she would have been in his bed this morning. frёewebnoѵēl.com

She let out a sigh, running her fingers through her hair. Ella Hawk’s naivety truly amazed her. The girl was so trusting, so eager to please. It was almost laughable how she had unwittingly paved the way for Kim to make her move. Then again, Ella’s gullibility had worked to her advantage, so Kim decided not to ridicule it too much.

"Well, last night didn’t go as planned," she murmured to herself, smoothing an imaginary wrinkle in her simple dress. "But this morning, things will change."

Ella had mentioned that the entire family usually gathered for breakfast—a tradition Kim intended to use to her advantage. She knew Aiden would be there, and she had spent the morning perfecting her appearance.

Kim chuckled softly as she thought of Aiden’s preferences. He used to adore her in the mornings, fresh-faced and without makeup. Of course, given the presence of his formidable grandmother, she couldn’t show up completely undone. Instead, she had meticulously crafted her "no-makeup" look, every detail planned to catch his attention without drawing suspicion.

A sharp knock at the door interrupted her thoughts and she was informed that the breakfast was served. She blew herself a flying kiss and winked. Ready for the performance she was!

As she stepped into the corridor, she almost collided with Ella, who was practically bouncing with excitement. Before Kim could say a word, Ella threw her arms around her in a tight hug.

"Kim! Your idea worked!" Ella gushed, her voice bubbling with enthusiasm. "Daddy has agreed to Aiden’s conditions! He even said he wants to meet you. Thank you so much! You’re like an angel sent to help me!"

Kim returned the hug with a smile, masking her true feelings. She was not quite as eager to meet Charles Hawk as he seemed to be in meeting her. Aiden hated his father to the core and if he even suspected that she had been in cahoots with him, he would not come near her with a ten-foot pole! But she said nothing of this to Ella and simply patted her back, "I’m happy for you, Ella. I’m sure Aiden will come around soon. This is for the best. Everything will be okay soon."

Ella’s eyes sparkled with hope. "I just wish he’d fallen for me instead of..." She hesitated before finishing in a hushed tone, "...instead of Serena."

Kim’s smile faltered for a brief moment, but she recovered quickly. He had fallen for her first. The memory of her past with Aiden was bittersweet. She had been the one to ruin it all, caught up in the thrill of a reckless affair. But that was then. Now, she intended to make things right, to reclaim what she had lost. She knew Aiden was wary of her, especially now that she was in his home. But Kim was confident she could handle any resistance he threw her way.

As they reached the breakfast room, Kim’s anticipation surged. This was her moment. However, her excitement quickly soured when she stepped inside and saw only Mabel Hawk and Nathaniel Hawk seated at the table.

Ella let go of Kim’s arm and approached her grandmother, her expression puzzled. "Grandma, this is Kim," she introduced, her voice tinged with confusion. "Where’s Aiden?"

Nathan, who was sipping his coffee, set his cup down with a sharp clink. His expression was cold as he replied curtly, "He’s on vacation."

"Vacation?" Ella repeated, her face falling. "But... where did he go?"

Nathan’s eyes flicked to Kim, then back to Ella. "That’s not for you to worry about," he said and watched as his sister exchanged looks with the person she had brought.

Nathan suppressed a sigh, though his irritation simmered beneath the surface. Frankly, he was as angry with Ella as he was with the situation she had created. Forcing Aiden’s hand like this—it was reckless, entitled, and utterly frustrating. She didn’t seem to understand the consequences of her actions, the strain they put on everyone else. She was growing too spoiled for her own good.

"But why didn’t he tell me he was going on vacation?" Ella asked softly, her voice tinged with hurt. The disappointment in her tone was almost childlike.

The corner of his mouth twitched—not quite a smirk, but close enough to reveal his growing impatience. "Why, Ella," he drawled, his tone dripping with mock surprise, "I didn’t realize Aiden reported his comings and goings to you. When did that start?"

Ella flushed at his words, her lips parting as if to respond, but no words came as she sent a whining look towards their grandmother.

The older woman sent a warning look towards Nathan before turning to her granddaughter," It was a sudden plan, from what I understand. A surprise from Serena."

Ella made a face at the name which was noticed by Nathan but before he could say anything to that, Kim spoke up," Ella. Don’t worry about this. I am sure your brother will return soon. You should share your good news."

All of Ella’s gloom and anger seemed to disappear in that moment and she took a seat excitedly. Seeing the change, Nathan sent a considering look towards this new person at the table and then at his sister, waiting for her so called good news.

"Daddy is coming back. And I am taking a break this semester to spend time with him."
